Jacques Savary (1622-1690) was for some time director of the French Royal Domains, and later became general business agent to the Duke of Mantua. He had such sound notions about commerce and was so successful in his operations that Colbert appointed him in 1670 in the "Conseil de la Reforme", which was to reform and refine the rules of commercial practice. The "Commercial Code" of 1673 resulting from it was called after him "Code Savary". He was then also pressed to write down and publish all his commercial knowledge, which pressure led to the publication of the famous Le parfait Négociant (1675). It taught everything a merchant should know, but only his left papers revealed to the world the immense and universal knowledge on commerce Savary possessed. The dictionary was immensely successful and covers all aspects of commerce and trade as well as legal and historical matters. Deals among others with: trading cities throughout the world, their manufactures, operation of foreign trade, trading companies (including a short history of the South Sea Company), banking (including an account of John Law's Bank), bookkeeping, etc. etc. The dictionary was the first of its kind to appear in Europe, and has furnished the principal part of the material for most of the dictionaries that were to follow. The project was sponsored by the French government who justly considered that such a dictionary, if well executed, would be of national importance. Hence a considerable, and indeed the most valuable portion of the work is compiled from memoirs sent to the author, by order of government, by the inspectors of manufactures in France and by the French consuls in foreign countries (see: McCulloch, p. 61). The dictionary is preceded, in volume one, with an elaborate, long (upto column 544) separate essay on the "État général du commerce de l'Europe" (and followed by the other continents Africa, Asia and the Americas). - Very small damage to head of spines of volumes 1 and 2.

Sontuosa legatura del XVIII secolo in marocchino granata, ricca bordura ai piatti e dentelle interna, il tutto impresso in oro; al piatto anteriore armi reali di Francia sormontate da corona e circondate da rami d'alloro, al dorso gigli di Francia e ricchi fregi, (conservata entro elegante astuccio e scatola). Testo su due colonne in car. gotico, iniziali a pennello in inchiostro rosso e blu nella "Tabula operis", grande iniziale filigranata al foglio I. Prima edizione (una seconda, con il testo tedesco, uscì nell'Ottobre dello stesso anno) della celebre Cronaca di Norimberga, il più grande figurato del Quattrocento: la sua straordinaria illustrazione si compone di ben 1809 silografie di vari formati (molte a piena pagina ed alcune su doppio foglio, alcune ripetute) opera di Michael Wohlgemuth, il noto maestro di Dürer e di Wil. Pleydenwurff. Studi recenti confermano che il giovane Albrecht Dürer lavorò ad alcune delle illustrazioni dell'opera. Soggetti sono tratti dal Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento, dalla storia classica e medioevale, nonché, in gran numero, da vedute topografiche delle città europee (molte di fantasia e varie reali nel XV sec., stupende). Comprende pure due carte geografiche su doppio foglio: un planisfero tolemaico e un'Europa centrale. L'illustrazione parte dalle varie fasi della creazione dell'universo, alla costruzione dell'Arca di Noé, a quella della Torre di Babele, ritratti di profeti e personaggi storici, vedute di città, raffigurazioni di cataclismi divini o naturali, fenomeni vari e mostri, comete ed eclissi di sole e di luna, torture varie, l'Anticristo e la Danza della Morte. Il testo dello Schedel descrive, in ordine cronologico, la storia degli avvenimenti del mondo dalla creazione all'anno 1493, ivi compreso un discusso passaggio sulla scoperta dell'America al f. 290 v. Si tratta senza dubbio del più bel libro di ogni epoca. Esemplare di illustre provenienza: al contropiatto anteriore ex libris del Conte Sergei Grigor'evich Stroganov (1794-1882), membro di una delle storiche famiglie della Russia; si distinse per la diffusione della cultura ricoprendo importanti incarichi nell'Amministrazione di Mosca. Ottimo esemplare. Risale al 1951 il sodalizio tra la Merini e Scheiwiller che, su invito di Montale, pubblica in quell’anno due sue poesie inedite nella raccolta «Poetesse del Novecento», per la collana editoriale “All’insegna del Pesce d’Oro”. La collaborazione e l’amicizia tra i due durerà decenni. Nel ’93, anno di questo documento, la Merini riceverà il Premio Librex- Guggenheim “Eugenio Montale” per la Poesia. Parlando dell’amico editore, la poetessa ebbe a dire: «Nelle mani di Vanni Scheiwiller divento un pesce». «Incassato, per conto di Alda Merini l’assegno di un milione (Banca di Roma, n. 0304540099-06 CC n. 3994/51) della Fortuna Audiovisivi s.r.l. "Abbiamo creduto bene di dare a questa seconda edizione del CALOMERO il titolo italiano di BEL GIORNO che a parer nostro vi corrisponde, a scanso d'ogni dubbia interpretazione". Angolo mancante a un foglio, ben lontano dallo stampato. Due svelti schizzi di statue classiche a matita al verso del piatto anteriore. Evidenti difetti esterni allla tela zigrinata originale, manca parte dell'etichetta edit. in carta appl. al dorso. Cerniere integre all'esterno, ma quella anteriore è staccata dall'interno, che è ben cucito, salvo per due tavole, che sono staccate. Macchie di vecchio inchiostro a tre facciate, senza danni allo stampato, salvo per una cifra coperta. Folchino SCHIZZI, letterato e poeta. socio corrispondente dell'Accademia Patavina dal 1828. Censito in 4 bibl. munito di un'ulteriore tavola ripiegata, che noi NON abbiamo, come del resto NON è dichiarata negli esemplari censiti da SBN in altre 10 bibl. e non è MAI menzionata nei pochissimi esemplari offerti in Maremagnum o nel web.
