Mortier, maréchal d'Empire et alors président du Conseil, homme dont la grande taille n'annonçait pas une intelligence à la hauteur - "dans les maisons fort élevées, le dernier étage est toujours fort mal meublé" selon le mot de Talleyrand rapporté dans "La Caricature" du 18 décembre 1834, p. 1720 - est représenté en mortier crachant une pluie de décorations. Louis-Philippe en artilleur déclenche le feu. La planche ridiculise le président du Conseil et dénonce un système d'achat de suffrages par distribution de "croix, de pensions, de faveurs de toute sorte" (in explication). Notons que le pantalon de Louis-Philippe est raccommodé par une pièce de tissu sur laquelle est inscrit "CHARTE" au niveau du postérieur du souverain.

"Beauvais Hours" So-called "Sotheby's Hours" Heures � l'usage de Beauvais Heures de Pierre Cauchon.
Rouen c.1430-1432. 4to. 140 x 195 mm. 18 lines with 18 initials in gold to both verso and recto. Written in brown red and blue ink in a professional French textura hand. With a beatiful decoration of ivyleaf sprouting from a gilted baguette in the outer margin both verso and recte. Text faded. Oratio. f. 179 � Presumably made for the bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon at the time residing in his own "Hotel" in Rouen the city where the book was written and illuminated. Today is Pierre Cauchon only remembered as the 'infamous' judge in the legendary trial against Jeanne la Pucelle. In 1432 was he appointed bishop of Lisieux and did then obviously loose interest in its completion in the ambitious and luxurious form it was conceived from the beginning. This would explain the sudden decline of artistic quality the pages left unfinished and the miserable fate it later suffered.<br><br>Provenance:<br>Sold Sotheby's 9 February 1948 Lot 225 Property of Oswald J. Swinburne; <br>Sold Sotheby's 14 July 1981 Lot 118 The property of Mrs. A Manning Catalogue p.53-54 with illustrations; Bought by the dealer Von der Merekt. Neumann-Walter of Leipzig and sold at various auctions as gatherings miniatures and single leaves the leaves mostly by way of auctions 2002-2006. <br>Three miniatures sold by Christie's in Nov. 2002 acquired by Maggs Bros. see Catalogue 1340 next. <br>Miniatures and a few well preserved single leaves sold by Maggs Bros. Ltd. Illuminations. Catalogue 1340 2003 No.9 10 11 12 13.<br>Gathering from the Office of the Dead and two large miniatures sold by Sotheby's 17 June 2003 Lots 58 60 61 last two acquired by Maggs Bros.<br>Additional information about some of the multiple transactions courteously provided by Paul Harcourt of Maggs Bros.:<br>Firstly the miniature of St. Agatha was sold at Bonham's in London on 25/6/03 lot 337 catalogued as France c. 1440 acquired by Sam Fogg photos by Peter Kidd 2003 now Margot and David Nishimura Collection.<br>Also Reiss & Sohn Auktion 86 15-18 Oct. 2002 lots 1051-1054 had I think 14 text leaves and a miniature of the Nativity. The miniature may have been unsold since it appears to have been at Hartung's Auktion 13-15 May 2003 lot 37. Lot 38 in the sale was a miniature of St. Maur later resold on by James Barrett and lot 39 consisted of 4 text leaves. Naples: late 15th century. A cutting 173 mm x 182 mm with historiated initial 'E' doubtless the introit 'Ecce advenit. for Mass at Epiphany 147 mm x 152 mm. Slight spots of rubbing. In an elaborate gold frame. § The Virgin and Child seated on the right with Joseph behind set among green and yellow hills painted in full colors and liquid gold the initial itself in elaborate leafy design in dark red with pink and white heightening entwined with green leaves at the top and bottom set on a burnished gold ground with colored trefoils in each corner flecked blue surround traces of text and music to the right of the initial verso with parts of 2 lines each of text and of music on a 4-line red stave. Large miniature in the style of the Neapolitan illuminator Cristoforo Majorana documented in Naples from 1480 until 1492 cf. F. Avril Dix siecles d'enluminure italienne 1984 pp. 176-7 no. 156. The standing kinds are painted with splendid robes fringed with pearls. The blue flecked border giving the effect of the whole initial hovering above the vellum derived from the classicising illumination of Mantua and Padua and became a feature of Neapolitan manuscripts of the late fifteenth century. late 15th century. Amiens c.1430-40. 4to. 135 x 185. 1 leaf of vellum 1 column written in dark brown red and blue ink in a gothic liturgical hand both verso and recte. 14 small initials all in gold recte. 15 small initials in gold verso. Large repair to outer margin not affecting text traces from having been bound in inner margin. � "This book in which the present leaf was part of was executed about the Fourteenth Century & is supposed to be the work of the celebrated Fra Angelica. It belongs in fact to a well-defined group of Amiens manuscripts of the second quater of the fifteenth century which centres around the Hours of Raoul d'Ailly." England ca. 1910. 392 x 287 mm. 15 3/8 x 11 1/4". 32 leaves with text in an attractive italic hand all separated by tissue guards. SUMPTUOUS OLIVE GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO ELABORATELY GILT BY ZAEHNSDORF stamp-signed on front doublure and with their exhibition stamp on rear turn-in covers with densely stippled floral roll border enclosing a large frame formed by drawer handle tools and floral tools on a stippled ground; central panel with large cornerpieces rampant with flower tools circlets volutes and much stippling; raised bands spine compartments heavily gilt in a similar style gilt titling RED MOROCCO DOUBLURES with opulent dentelle frame surrounded by gilt-tooled green morocco turn-ins red watered silk endleaves with gilt edging all edges gilt. WITH 76 BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTIONS OF PORTRAIT MINIATURES BY RICHARD COSWAY ANDREW PLIMER AND OTHERS mounted and enclosed by hand-painted burnished gold frames EACH PORTRAIT WITH HAND-ILLUMINATED TITLE in red blue green and burnished gold. Verso of front endleaf with book label of Thomas Agnew & Sons Old Bond Street Library. A bit of wear to front joint a little rubbing to extremities occasional mild rumpling to head or tail of vellum leaves isolated small marginal smudges otherwise a fine specimen the vellum creamy and bright the illuminations shining and the binding quite sound and lustrous with gold. Composed of vellum leaves this is a unique luxurious catalogue of a miniatures collection with delicate script lovely illumination and a stately binding by one of London's foremost workshops. State-of-the-art photographic reproductions of mostly 18th century miniatures are juxtaposed here with calligraphy and illuminations harking back to Medieval bookmaking. Each portrait is surrounded by a gold frame and accompanied by a hand-written description with an illuminated title giving biographical details of known subjects and a physical description of the miniatures whenever they are labelled simply "Portrait of a Lady" or "Portrait of a Gentleman." The scale of this production--which is nearly twice the size of most illuminated manuscripts of the early 20th century--and the splendor of the binding point to a patron of considerable means likely either the proprietors of or a client of the Agnew art dealers. The Agnew firm began as a printseller in Manchester in 1817 but over the course of the 19th century became one of the principal British galleries under the leadership of the founder's son William. A London branch opened in 1860 and the Bond Street flagship in 1875. William Agnew 1825-1910 did much to foster the careers of British artists Holman Hunt Frederick Leighton and Edward Burne-Jones and his clients included Henry Tate whom he encouraged to found the celebrated Tate Gallery. The binding here is a superb example of the work of the Zaehnsdorf firm long a top-ranked English bindery. Born in Pest Hungary Joseph Zaehnsdorf 1816-86 served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman and then settled in London where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33 when the senior Joseph died and the firm flourished under the son's leadership becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders including the Frenchman Louis Genth who was chief finisher from 1859-84 and trained a number of others including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947 the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. It is generally understood that the firm reserved the use of its oval stamp showing a binder at work seen here for their finest bindings including those entered in exhibitions. unknown

Christ with the Cross from an Antiphonal.
German: c. 1500. 132 x 155 mm. Matted. § An intriguing painting showing the instruments of the Passion a crowing cock the head of Judas the thirty pieces of silver &c. A somewhat surreal piece with the head and some of the instruments floating in the air against a rich blue background Christ standing before a tomb clad in loincloth and red cloak with a blue cloak on the tomb a ladder and pillar at each side. Some surface wear and damage within the image which is also cropped slightly but an interesting and unusual painting. c. 1500. 132 x 155 mm. Matted. § An intriguing painting hardcover

Coronation of the Virgin miniature from a Book of Hours.
France possibly Maine or Anjou: c. 1480. Single leaf 162 mm x 110 mm. Slight fading in an old frame with metal fittings. A finely painted miniature with the use of gold modeling and the cloud of cherubim in the tradition pioneered by Jean Fouquet. § The Virgin and God seated on separate stools in a paneled room God placing a crown on her head a host of blue seraphim behind miniature in an arched compartment above the large initial and three lines of text opening of Compline within a full border of colored flowers and acanthus leaves in little rectangles with ground of liquid gold or pale blue or plain vellum. c. 1480. Decretals.
North Italy: 1350-1375. Folio 420 x 270mm. Written in ink on vellum in a Gothic hand with a surrounding gloss in a smaller but similar hand colored initials in red and blue. With extensive annotations and a large marginal drawing of three knights in armor in different and perhaps slightly later hands. Trimmed very close at the top and one edge no apparent loss of text. In very good condition. § A rare annotated medieval leaf with drawing. The Canon Law text from the Decretals begins at book 5 title 33 of chapter 17 de privilegiis et excessibus privilegiatorum to the beginning of chapter 23. Interestingly chapter 20 deals with the privileges of the Knights Templar. 1350-1375. Folio hardcover

ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAVES IN FRENCH OFFERED INDIVIDUALLY

France early 15th century. 150 x 108 mm. 5 7/8 x 4 1/4". Single column 17 lines in a gothic book hand. Rubrics in red one leaf with a pink and blue line-filler with white tracery and gold bezant each leaf with two or more one-line gold initials on blue and pink ground and two or more two-line initials in blue and pink on a gold ground with tendrils emanating from the corners terminating in gilt ivy leaves and blue flowers. Vellum faintly soiled one leaf with an early and very small repair at the corner of the text a few trivial thumb smudges but these faults all quite trivial and on the whole very well preserved. While Book of Hours leaves in Latin appear frequently on the market individual leaves in French are rather more difficult to come by. The present leaves provide an excellent opportunity to study the Medieval form of this language in a religious context in addition to being lovely specimens in themselves. unknown

Rouen ca. 1490. 197 x 127 mm. 7 3/4 x 5". Single column 24 lines in a clean attractive bâtarde hand. Rubrics in red line endings of blue or red with gold embellishment a number of one-line initials in gold on a red or blue ground one leaf with three two-line initials in white and black on a brushed gold ground and enclosing flowers and BOTH SIDES OF EACH LEAF WITH A VERY ATTRACTIVE PANEL BORDER featuring acanthus leaves flowers grapes and other vegetation all ON A BRUSHED GOLD GROUND. Margins just slightly browned at the very edge small stain on one corner of each leaf but IN VERY FINE CONDITION the gold and paint bright and fresh and the margins very ample. unknown
