‎ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAVES OFFERED INDIVIDUALLY‎

‎FROM A VERY FINE VERY LARGE BOOK OF HOURS‎

‎Paris ca. 1440. 222 x 162 mm. 8 3/4 x 6 3/8". Single column 16 lines of text in a beautiful gothic book hand. Rubrics in red leaves with varying numbers of line fillers and one- and two-line initials in burnished gold blue and magenta highlighted with white tracery and WITH LOVELY RINCEAU BORDERS on one or both sides these composed of delicately twining hairline stems bearing red and blue blossoms and FEATURING A PROFUSION OF BURNISHED GOLD IVY LEAVES. IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION the vellum extraordinarily bright fresh and clean and WITH MARGINS AS VAST AS ONE COULD EVER HOPE FOR. Commissioned for use by a woman as indicated by the feminine form in the "Obsecro te" the Book of Hours from which these leaves come could only have been a manuscript of great beauty prepared for a household of very substantial wealth and importance. The level of achievement manifested here in both the scribal hand and the execution of the illuminated decoration clearly indicates that some of the best artisans money could buy were at work on this book and only a powerful family could afford to pay their price. Further corroboration of this fact is seen in the leaves' immense margins which are at least as wide as on any Book of Hours leaves we have ever owned. Such a conspicuous display of purchasing power those extra millimeters meant the slaughtering of extra animals and that meant greater cost announces an owner's self-congratulatory consequence that is uncommon except in the grandest of prayer books of the period. Happily the condition here matches the importance of the manuscript which was obviously considered from the beginning--and ever after--an object to be carefully preserved. For additional leaves from this Book of Hours at different price points please check our website. unknown‎

‎ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAVES OFFERED INDIVIDUALLY‎

‎FROM A VERY DECORATIVE BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN‎

‎Paris ca. 1420. 203 x 143 mm. 8 x 5 5/8". Single column 15 lines of text in an attractive gothic book hand. Leaves with multiple finely illuminated one-line initials and a single two-line initial in blue or magenta with white tracery and containing one or more twining flowers in blue orange and white the whole on a burnished gold ground usually as many line fillers of the same design as initials the text enclosed on three sides by a bar border of blue and gold with acanthus leaf extensions at the bottom and EACH SIDE OF EACH LEAF WITH A VERY INTRICATE FULL BORDER OF RINCEAU consisting of many floral buds gold bezants and ivy leaves. Borders trimmed a little close at one edge nol loss of decoration one leaf with thin strip of mounting cloth along inner margin a hint of yellowing at edges but generally in excellent condition THE ILLUMINATION ESPECIALLY AND CONSISTENTLY BRIGHT AND FRESH. These are Parisian Book of Hours leaves from what was obviously a splendid manuscript. The substantial size of the leaves the glistening gold and the intricacy of the decoration of the border and the illuminated letters combine here to make a very pleasing impression. unknown‎

‎Illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum.‎

‎Historiated initial ‘U’ of a standing Saint cut to shape from a choirbook.‎

‎Central Italy c.1250. Matted in fine condition. § A well-painted initial of a man in flowing blue and pink robes holding a book to which he gestures probably Saint Paul. Italian miniature paintings of this period are known to be difficult to localize with any accuracy but as the face is strongly drawn with well-proportioned features it might well hail from central Italy. unknown‎

‎Illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum. Master of Jacques de Besancon.‎

‎The Flight into Egypt.‎

‎Paris: c. 1480. 150 cm x 98 cm. Slight wear to inner margin small hole in text portion. In an elaborate gold frame. § Arch-toped miniature showing the Virgin in blue holding the Child and a fruit seated on a donkey Joseph in front with a staff a maidservant with basket behind set in a landscape with city an idol toppling from a column and a full-page border with sprays of swirling blue and gold acanthus red blue and white flowers on a paneled liquid gold and white ground inhabited by a duck-faced Grotesque with four lines of text in gothic bookhand with three-line opening initial with blue and mauve staves against a ground of burnished gold. Though not showing his trademark architectural frames the subtle drapery folds porcelain complexions fine features and especially the fur-like horizontally banded long runs of hair in dark gold or gray as well as the balanced composition betray the influence if not the hand of the Master de Jacques de Besancon whose dated works range from 1485 to 1498 and who took over both the style and the patrons of his predecessor Maitre Francois active by 1473. The miniature includes the apocryphal detail from Pseudo-Matthew associated with the Flight into Egypt showing an idol toppling from its column. On another miniature that survives from the same book showing the Adoration of the Magi there is a manger which derives from a model also used by the Master of Jean Rolin in a Nativity around 1450. Jean Rolin was probably the master of Maitre Francois an artist with whom the Master de Jacques de Besancon has often been confused. These latter two however were without doubt the most sought after miniaturists in Paris in the last quarter of the 15th century. c. 1480. 150 cm x 98 cm. Slight wear to inner margin unknown‎

‎SACROS RITOS Y CEREMONIAS BATISMALES A D FERNANDO REMIREZ FARI... NUESTRA SENORA DE LA PISCINA FUNDACION DEL REY D RAMIRO DE NAVARRA. EL VPD IOSEF DE S MARIA ...‎

‎Simon Faxardo, Seville,1637‎
