Questo breve ma denso saggio muove dal presupposto che Dante, in quanto erede dell’antica sapienza mediterranea, sia da annoverare fra i “maestri di verità” di ogni tempo. Del resto, tutta la grande poesia, come quella della Commedia, non essendo riducibile a mera espressione estetica e sentimentale di una soggettività, contiene anche una rivelazione, il dono e la visione di una conoscenza profonda dell’uomo e dell’universo. Le molteplici, metamorfiche configurazioni che il simbolismo dell’acqua viene ad assumere nel poema dantesco vengono qui esplorate con estremo rigore filologico, nulla concedendo a discutibili interpretazioni modernizzanti (di tipo psicanalitico, per esempio). Esse, infatti, tendono a eludere il problema di ricostruire adeguatamente un clima e una temperie spirituale molto lontani dalla nostra mentalità, che sono quelli propri di una civiltà “tradizionale” nel senso guénoniano del termine.
