KELMSCOTT PRESS; Dante Gabriel ROSETTI
Hand and Soul
Hammersmith London and Chicago: Kelmscott Press "sold by Way and Williams Chicago" 1895. Covers slightly bowed as usual and with a few stains but a lovely well-preserved copy. 16mo 14.3 x 10.4 cm. Golden type. Title and first leaf within woodcut borders 15a and 15 four- and six-line initials. Epigraph title on b1r shoulder notes footnote on e1v and first paragraph of colophon printed in red. 4 56 pages. Original vellum over pasteboard narrow yapp edges gilt-lettered on spine. Provenance: Frank Jean Pool engraved bookplate. Pool was a book and autograph collector from Cleveland Ohio. He became a member of the Rowfant Club in 1892 and thus likely was the original buyer of this copy. His bookplate was designed by Thomas Tryon in 1893. As described in 'Book-plates of To-day' ed. Wilbur Macey Stone 1902 "Mr. Frank Pool is obviously a lover of drama. In an oval window set in masonry is a Roman gentleman laurel crowned reading from a large volume while at the upper right and left sides are comedy and tragedy masks from which hang a gracefully festooned wreath." One of 300 copies on paper for America there were an additional 11 copies on vellum for the American market; in England there were 225 on paper and 10 on vellum. This is the only Kelmscott Press book published in America. The Chicago-based publisher W. Irving Way approached Sydney Cockerell in April 1895 suggesting a joint venture that could be issued at a modest price. Having recently finished 'Child Cristopher' and with the Chaucer well underway Cockerell felt that something could be arranged. Morris himself had been considering a reprint of Rossetti's book and they agreed to co-publish the book. Printing began on 12 September 1895 and the American copies were shipped on 14 December. Cockerell wrote to Way & Williams apologizing for only sending 6 vellum copies and not the 12 that had been requested saying that the price he had quoted "will only just cover the expenses if it does that the cost of binding having been greater than was anticipated." Way & Williams proposed another joint publication but Morris declined being "full of plans of his own." LE TERZE RIME DIVINIA COMMEDIA
Venetiis: in Aedib Aldi 1502. 252 leaves. a-z8 A-G8 H4. Small octavo. Full green French morocco raised bands gilt inner dentelles a.e.g. Set in Italic. Aldine anchor on colophon. One raised band nicked careful sympathetic restoration of upper joint light scattered foxing faint old manuscript foliation of leaves but a very good copy. Cloth slipcase and chemise. First Aldine edition and the first edition of Dante in octavo format based on a manuscript sent to Aldus by the Venetian humanist Pietro Bembo. The edition is also notable for historians of typography as it marks the first utilization of the Aldine Anchor as Aldus's signature device -- although it does not appear in all copies among them the earliest. The edition was such a success that it was soon counterfeited in such a faithful manner that close scrutiny of the final collation is necessary to distinguish the editions. With this edition "it was as if the poem had never been printed before: the 15th-century vulgate was swept aside. Bembo's text was to become the basis for every subsequent edition of the Divine Comedy until the late 19th century" - Renaissance Dante in Print 1472 - 1629. First edition of Rossetti's first published collection of original verse large paper issue. One of only twenty-five copies printed on large handmade paper "for Private Circulation Only." Stetz and Lasner in ENGLAND IN THE 1880s note: "This book by the circumstances of its publication by its contents and by its design secured Rossetti's reputation. When his wife Elizabeth Sidal Rossetti died in February 1862 Rossetti placed the original manuscripts of his poems in her coffin. In 1869 these were exhumed secretly from her grave and published in this volume in 1870 with other more recent work. The book opens with 'The Blessed Damozel' Rossetti's most famous poem which had first appeared in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine THE GERM in 1850; among the other contents are the sonnet sequence called 'The House of Life' and a group of poems about paintings that show Rossetti's abiding interest in unifying the sister arts. . . . POEMS 1870 was perhaps most remarkable for being one of the first books to be designed throughout by an author. Over a period of nine months Rossetti supervised the printing of the proofs while painstakingly designing the covers and endsheets. The result had a great influence upon writers and designers of the 1880s. Oscar Wilde's POEMS 1881 and several of Walter Pater's books clearly were modeled upon Rossetti's unique volume."
