This is a pre-production continuity not to be confused with a post-production continuity. <br/><br/>The "other woman" in this early 1940s Twentieth Century-Fox programmer turns out to be Emily Virginia Gilmore faithful secretary to master architect Henry Summers James Ellison. Hoping to trap her boss into marriage Emily begins sending "mash notes" to Henry purportedly from a mysterious female admirer. She then coerces her old pal Ralph Dan Duryea to pose as her jealous Southern-fried boy friend of the nonexistent letter-writer. Poor Henry convinced that Ralph is the gangster who's been threatening him with bodily harm takes off for parts unknown. Our heroine spends the rest of the picture chasing Henry until he finally catches her Hal Erickson Rovi. <br/><br/>From the AFI Catalog: "The working title of this film was 'Leap Year' also the title of Lamar Trotti's original story. According to a September 4 1941 memo in the Twentieth Century-Fox Records of the Legal Department located at the UCLA Arts Special Collections Library Trotti wrote the story "sometime ago" and sold it to the studio for one dollar when producer Walter Morosco decided to make it as a "low budget picture." Although the legal records indicate that Jerry Sackheim worked on a screenplay for the picture the extent of his contribution to the completed film has not been determined. <br/><br/>Orange titled wrappers noted as FIRST DRAFT CONTINUITY on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 185 and production No. 730 dated June 6 1942. Usures de surface sur les plats du premier et deuxième volume (épidermures stoppées), petits manques de cuir et petite galerie sans gravité, petites piqûres de vers en queue du dos du premier volume. Malgré ces quelques défauts l'ensemble reste très décoratif et parfaitement solide. Intérieur très frais. A noter une mouillure en marge intérieure des trois premiers feuillets du premier volume et les derniers feuillets du même volume avec mouillure marginale saine (à quelques feuillets seulement). Exemplaire relié à l'époque aux armes (en queue) d'un membre de la famille de Damas (?) ou d'Aubusson (?). Première édition au format in-quarto. Cette édition est bien complète en 3 volumes in-quarto (il n'y a pas d'atlas pour cette édition). Elle reprend le corpus de l'édition en 7 volumes in-8, avec les passages supprimés réintégrés ici au bas des pages sous forme de variantes. La première édition de ce magistral ouvrage a paru pour la première fois en 1770. "Véritable encyclopédie de l’anticolonialisme au XVIIIe siècle" ce texte entre dans la catégorie des "Voyages philosophiques" et représente un prétexte à des réflexions sur la "loi naturelle" et dénonce tout à la fois despotisme, cléricalisme, esclavage et colonialisme. L'ouvrage est toujours décrit par les commentateurs comme une « machine de guerre » contre le pouvoir en place. Pour la rédaction de cette encyclopédie Raynal eut recours à la collaboration de nombreux informateurs et collaborateurs écrivains tels que le Baron d'Holbach ou Diderot, à qui on attribue une part importante des textes. Interdite en 1772, l’Histoire des deux Indes sera à nouveau publiée par l’abbé Raynal dans une nouvelle édition en 1774 qui est immédiatement mise à l’Index par le clergé. C’est en 1780 qu’il publie sa troisième édition de l'Histoire des deux Indes, encore plus virulente que les deux précédentes et qu’il avoue implicitement comme étant de lui en y faisant graver son portrait en frontispice. Condamné par le Parlement de Paris, l’ouvrage est brûlé par le bourreau en place publique, ce qui lui assure un succès considérable. L’Histoire des deux Indes a également été l’occasion de la Lettre apologétique de l’abbé Raynal à Monsieur Grimm (1781) de Diderot (qui aurait écrit au moins un tiers de l'ouvrage, selon Grimm). Dans cette lettre Diderot écrit : « Raynal est un historien comme il n'y en a point encore eu, et tant mieux pour lui, et tant pis pour l'histoire. Si l'histoire avait, dès les premiers temps, saisi et traîné par les cheveux les tyrans civils et les tyrans religieux, je ne crois pas qu'il en fussent devenus meilleurs; mais ils en auraient été plus détestés, et leurs malheureux sujets en seraient peut-être devenus moins patients... Le livre que j'aime et que les rois et leurs courtisans détestent, c'est le livre qui fait naître des Brutus... » Dans notre exemplaire une note manuscrite de l'époque révolutionnaire indique : "Le Parlement de Paris proscrivit, le 25 mai 1781, l'Histoire philosophique de l'abbé Raynal, et ordonna que cet ouvrage fût brûlé. Il décréta même l'auteur de prise de corps. L'abbé Raynal se vit donc forcé de s'enfuir précipitamment de France. Le 15 août 1790, l'Assemblée nationale, sur la rédaction proposée par les députés Voidel et Maloüet, annula, comme contraire aux droits naturels et imprescriptibles de l'homme, le décret lancé par le Parlement de Paris contre l'abbé Raynal et son Histoire philosophique (v. Oeuvres d'André Chénier, 2e vol., p. 119)." (note manuscrite ancienne sur le faux-titre du premier volume). "It became a key text of the American Revolution, and Raynal became a correspondent of Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams." [...] La liberté est la propriété de soi; on distingue trois sortes de libertés: la liberté naturelle, la liberté civile, la liberté politique; c'est-à-dire la liberté de l'homme, celle du citoyen et celle d'un peuple. Armes dorées en queue des dos (mariage - non identifiées - non reconnu par O.H.R. qui les cite pourtant sous la planche n°888, figure n°3). Armoiries peut-être d'une ancienne famille de Bourgogne ? (provenance bourguignonne pour les volumes concernés). Par ailleurs O.H.R. les mentionne sur une Histoire de Bourgogne), peut-être les armes d'une branche de la famille de Damas (à la croix ancrée) ou d'Aubusson. Les présents volumes de Raynal ont été acquis également en Bourgogne ce qui laisserait supposer l'hypothèse "de Damas" plus pertinente. Références : A. Magazine. nice clean copy externally fine but with small rectangular pieces cut out at the top and bottom corners of pp. 23/24 impacting the two film-related articles see Notes but none of the other content. pen & ink drawings B&W photographs The rare debut issue of this important sci-fi/fantasy-oriented fanzine which represented the editor's return to the publishing field after an earlier publication "CriFanAc" had crashed and burned in the late 1950s after the publication of a half-dozen issues. Some of this background a lot having to do with the early travails and infighting that plagued the Dallas Futurian Society of which editor Reamy was a co-founder is covered in his opening editorial screed which includes numerous references to various personalities who are no doubt long-gone-and-forgotten. "Trumpet" itself lasted for ten issues and was nominated a couple of times for a Hugo Award as Best Fanzine; Reamy himself died in 1977 at the age of 42. This issue is conspicuously fiction-heavy containing the following short stories: "The Altruist" by Charles Portis a Korean War tale which I believe is uncollected; at least it doesn't appear in the 2013 anthology of his work "Escape Velocity"; "The Cosmic Dancers" by James Twiggs; "The Demolished Fan" by Richard Koogle; "The Sisters" by Leonora Carrington a reprint of a 1945 story; and "The Traveling Salesman and the Farmer's Daughter" by Arthur Norman. Also in this issue: "I'm Not Afraid" an article by Marion Zimmer Bradley; a portfolio of Christmas card designs by Hannes Bok; "Existential Da-da Pop Art Funnies" several comic-strip features by Gilbert Shelton; two film-related pieces "Somebody Out There Likes Us!" by Al Jackson a survey of 50s and early 60s science fiction films and a reassessment of the 1954 giant-ant classic THEM! by Reamy both these articles are incomplete due to the corner-clipping of pp.23/24; "Le Sacre du Printemps" a portfolio four pen-and-ink drawings of a crone-like woman in various guises by Reamy; additional retro film reviews by Reamy of ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES 1959 HAND OF DEATH 1962 and THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF 1961. ‎8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, and illustrations and facsimiles in the text; handsomely bound in red full crushed morocco, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The first of Reid's two famous accounts culminates with the author's 'home run' in 1942. Includes a detailed list of escapees. Reid's classic of POW life and escape began a virtual sub-industry (of astonishingly variable quality) including dozens of later books, several feature films, countless magazine pieces and a long-running TV series. There is, however, no mistaking the calibre of the original. Now that Colditz is to become (in part at least) a youth hostel, interest in its wartime role will only grow. Enser, p. 151.‎

Illustrated wrappers with gorgeous art-deco style orientalist pochoir images printed in hues of purple green orange and white. <br /> <br /> A now scarce and lavishly printed promotional publication announcing the upcoming run of Max Reinhardt's "Sumurun" a "wordless play in 9 scenes" at the Casino Theater in New York. <br /> <br /> The majority of the text is a scene by scene narration of the plot of the story written in prose text accompanied by photographic images of the corresponding scenes and characters. The introductory text discusses the significance of the work and the history of past stagings of the production to date. The final text page contains the lyrics to the "Song of Sumurun." Illustrated throughout in black and green with decorative geometric borders as well a title page a few initials and small vignettes all finely screen-printed. B/W photographic reproductions after staged studio photographs of characters and scenes from the production. Also included is a large photographic portrait of Max Reinhardt at the front as well as portraits of producer Winthrop Ames and composer Victor Hollaender at the the rear. Oddly no cast credits are listed here which may indicate that this was printed before the cast for the American production had been completely finalized. The striking art deco covers were designed by German graphic artist Hans Flato 1887-1950.<br /> <br /> By 1910 pioneering German theatrical director and producer Max Reinhardt had for many years been acclaimed for his avant-garde and expressionistic style. Based on a suggestion to create an oriental pantomime Reinhardt commissioned writer Friedrich Freksa 1882-1955 to shape a story for the show. Freksa created a narrative for the wordless pantomime based on some of the stories from the Arabian Nights. Composer and conductor Victor Hollaender 1866-1940 was charged with creating the music. The stage design costuming and effects were all in the hands of Reinhardt's frequent collaborator Ernst Stern 1876-1954. These men were all noted and acclaimed creative figures in their own right.<br /> <br /> Upon it's premiere on April 22nd 1910 at Reinhardt's Kammerspiele in Berlin the show was lauded. The success was such that the following month Reinhardt moved the production to his Deutsches Theater next door which could hold a larger audience. Critics and audiences at the time noted the novel and dramatic effects of Reinhardt's stripped down but expressive style in elevating the story and giving it a primal feel. His use of a runway stage - with his actors emerging from and disappearing into the audience - was said to make the storytelling more engrossing and break down barriers between the characters and the viewers. In June of that year Reinhardt released a filmed version his stage production in German cinemas. The following year in 1911 the stage show's success took it twice to London and to Vienna as well. <br /> <br /> In 1912 Broadway producer Winthrop Ames brought Sumurun to America and in doing so brought Reinhardt and his work to the United States for the very first time. Ames imported the original production from Berlin featuring the very same crew that had made the initial run such a success along with some of the original cast. Composer Victor Hollaender was brought over to conduct the music himself. The title role in the American production was performed by Camilla Eibenschütz 1884–1959 replacing Grete Wiesenthal from the original German production. The American premiere was held at New York's noted Casino Theater on January 16th 1912. It was the very first time that a runway stage had been used in a major American theatrical production. Although only initially planned for a limited engagement the production's success lead to a total of 62 performances in New York. Following this the American production moved to Chicago and then to Boston. This was later followed by a run of performances in Paris. In 1920 famed German director Ernst Lubitsch directed a originally conceived lavish film version of Sumurun with Jenny Hasselqvist in the title role released in America as "One Arabian Night."<br /> <br /> Wrappers with minor to light smudges creases and closed tears to the very edges with images unaffected. There is a slight chip at the bottom right corner of the front cover. Interior clean throughout with all images and text vibrant. Illustrated bookplate of previous owner pasted on the interior front cover. Wrappers in very good interior in near fine condition overall. Quite scarce. Protected in modern mylar.
