A delightful fairy story with goblins and possibly the first appearance of Mr Papingay who features in the title of 4 of the author's later books. A touch of rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners gilt panels slightly dull on upper cover small lightly faded area at tail of spine due to removal of previous owner's paper label very faint foxing to endpapers a few fox spots and margins faintly browned on title page a few margin fox spots to first few pages and last few pages next to plates faintly browned very small closed tear to 1 lower margin neatly repaired minute closed tear to fore-edge of 4 leaves otherwise a very good plus copy of uncommon Margaret Tarrant title. Laid in is a typed letter dated 8 August 1946 to the author's husband Sidney H. Webb from the Medici Society who had published many of Mrs St John Webb's earlier titles informing him that they don't think they could make a success of reprinting this title and therefore returning to him the copy he had sent them. The letter is signed J. Gurney Managing Director and is quite foxed. Sidney Webb has written his address in pencil on the front endpaper requesting that the book is to be returned to him if not required. Sidney H. Webb wrote a few minor novels. Very pretty coloured illustrations of little dressed animals throughout. Spine cloth faded very slightly worn at head and tail of spine and corners board edges slightly rubbed light score marks to boards lower cover very slightly dusty contents very nice no inscriptions. Very good copy lacking dustwrapper. A little white rabbit who is fed up with constant baths meets a white kitten who is crying both because of the constant baths and because of the rats: 'I card catch them' 'All by family have been good ratcatchers but they have ginger fur and bide is white so the rats always see be comig and rud away' sic. Written by George B. Templeton known best for his work as Assistant Director for the 1934 film "The Thin Man" the 1942 "This Gun for Hire" and the Western television series "Rawhide." Blue wrappers with Harold Hecht Agency label to the front wrapper dated December 4 1944 with credits for story writer Chamberlain and screenwriter Templeton.
