New York: January 2 circa 1900. 1900. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling the first side of a sheet of The Players Club letterhead folded once to form 4 sides each 7-7/8 inches high by 5 inches wide with the club's logo embossed at top left of the first side. Garland has written his New York City street address over the club's printed address. Signed "Hamlin Garland". The edges of each side are slightly darkened with minor soiling to the 1st & 4th sides & with a tiny chip to the bottom of the fold. Remnants of paper adhere to the blank 4th side where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded with a heavy crease for mailing with a tear to the 3rd & 4th sides at the fold. Very good. <p>Garland writes that he and his wife have been in town two weeks "but Mrs. Garland has been so miserable that we have hardly let any one know we are here. She is much better now and will be able to see her friends soon."</p><p>Hamlin Garland 1860-1940 was an American fiction writer essayist Georgist and psychical researcher. Brought up on a series of Midwestern farms he is best known for his fiction involving hardworking Midwestern farmers. Settling in Boston in 1884 he became attracted to the ideas of Henry George and his Single Tax Movement. George came to influence a number of Garland's works including his short-story collection "Main-Travelled Roads" 1891 which was his first major success. Garland lived for a number of years on a Midwest farm married Zulime Taft sister of sculptor Lorado Taft and began working as a teacher and lecturer. A prolific writer he continued to publish novels short stories essays and in 1917 his autobiography "Son of the Middle Border". Its sequel "Daughter of the Middle Border" won the 1922 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. After moving to Hollywood California in 1929 Garland devoted his remaining years to investigating psychic phenomena. In his final book "The Mystery of the Buried Crosses" 1939 he tried to defend the legitimacy of such phenomena and of psychic mediums.</p> New York: January 2, circa [1900].

Los Angeles: Underworld Productions 1980. Draft script for an unproduced film. Based on John Gay's 1728 play "The Beggar's Opera" source for many similar adaptations including "The Threepenny Opera." The odds are constantly stacked against Mickey Moore an honest gambler who is about to be killed for owing a powerful man too much money. He falls for a female acrobat and daughter of the owner of the local chapel who dislikes Moore. After a failed robbery of a Sheik Moore is thrown in jail but love and salvation come to him as he is about to hang in a ghost town outside Vegas where he let ten dollars ride on the black on a roulette wheel and he ends up winning the casino. Set in Las Vegas. Red titled wrappers.
