The Dead Original Program for the 1987 film
New York: Vestron Pictures 1987. Original program printed in the US for the 1987 British-American-Irish film. These programs saw popularity beginning in the 1960s and continued to be produced until the 1980s and the ever-growing VHS market with a particularly high distribution in Asian countries. This example features several full-color pages on-the-set images and biographies of the cast and crew as well as a large image and brief biography of James Joyce. Based on Joyce's 1914 short-story collection "Dubliners" with "The Dead" being the final story of the collection. Gabriel Conroy McCann a university professor arrives late to a party with his wife Gretta Anjelica Huston. Throughout the evening Gabriel is confronted by not only the party's guests but his own epiphanies concerning his own status his wife's past and the lives of dead relatives. Director Huston's final film. His son Tony the film's screenwriter was nominated for an Academy Award as was the costume designer Dorothy Jeakins. 9 x 12 inches saddle-stitched 14 leaves color illustrated wrappers. This is the autobiography of one of these people of a woman who carried a beggar's stick in the streets of P'englai and who was a servant in the yamens of the great and the homes of foreign missionaries; who married an opium smoker and saw him sell one of their daughters into slavery; who only through the inscrutable ways of fate has ever had enough to eat and yet who has preserved a tremendous zest for living and a pleasure in its extraordinary ways. Ning Lao T'ai T'ai whose story this is was born in P'englai in Shantung province in 1867 and so far as Ida Pruitt knows she is still living in an area which was occupied by the Japanese. In her life she has known not only privation and the troubles and excitements of her fellow townsmen she has seen her granddaughter across the ocean to study in a foreign country and return to devote herself to a strange new thing called not Emperor or Empress or the name of some leader but China. This however is not the story of great events it is a genuine warm blooded dramatic chronicle of a woman's life of the life of one of the little people in its wisdom and hardship and daily toil lighted by affection and gaiety that persist abundantly despite the endless pursuit of enough food and shelter to stay alive.
