Chance for Adventure Original screenplay for an unproduced film
Los Angeles: David O. Selznick Productions 1954. Revised "partial" script for an unproduced film dated 10/21/54. Based on the 1948 short story by Max Shulman this adaptation possibly written by Shulman though no credit is given. Shulman's short story was originally published in the April 18 1948 issue of the Spokesman-Review a newspaper published in Spokane Washington. Selznick Productions commonly issued "partial" scripts such as these for content review. We have never seen a more complete version of this title. Shulman is best known for having created "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" a beloved television series that ran from 1959 to 1963 and the play "The Tender Trap" that became the basis for the 1955 Frank Sinatra film. An fantastical adventure story wherein a bored couple living in the fictitious town of Grainbelt Minnesota encounters the opportunity to take a trip to New York City and claim an inheritance. Orange titled wrappers noted as Revised Script on the front wrapper dated 10/21/54. 19 leaves on eye rest green stock with last page of text numbered 108. New York: Chelsea Theater Center 1974. Original script for the 1974 play. Based on the 1962 short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer and adapted by him and playwright Leah Napolin for the stage the play premiered October 25 1975 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran for a total of 223 performances. Tovah Feldshuh was nominated for a Tony for her portrayal of the title role. Faithful to the original story the play follows a young women who begins living as a man named Anshel after her father dies in order to continue studying the Torah in defiance of Jewish tradition. There's a strong theme of transgenderism in the play and story as the main character describes himself as "neither one sex nor the other" and having "the soul of a man in the body of a woman." Even after being discovered Yentl chooses to continue to live as Anshel rather than return to life as a woman. This contrasts strongly with the text of the better known Barbara Streisand film despised by Singer where the transgender aspect of the narrative is replaced by a heteronormative romance and musical numbers.
