Plain text dustwrapper with black coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. A series of lectures given by the author at Oxford in 1960. In it and the lectures he described some of the forces which created what we call "Victorian England". Softening and browning of the backstrip edges and rubbing to the book corners. The spine is somewhat cocked. Browning and foxing of the textblock edges and light age toning of the internal pages. Foxing and offset tanning to the endpapers and previous owner's name to the top edge of the free front end page. Creasing to the dustwrapper edges along with browning. Sunning to the backstrip and the laminate has started to lift on the front dustwrapper panel side of the backstrip. A few marks and scores to the dustwrapper with a fee foxing spots to the verso of the dustwrapper. There is a 0.5 " tear to the lower edge of the front dustwrapper panel. This oversized paperback may be a First Edition since I bought it the same year as publication and no later printing history is provided. Filled with black-and-white photographs drawings blueprints and ads to complement the text this book provides a century and a half of architectural design for American middle-class homes their room set-ups and the prevalent sense of decor. Rubbing to extremeities one scuff mark on front board but still an attractive copy. The author recounts her experiences on an extended Raymong and Whitcomb tour which took her across the country from Boston to California and back again. Includes chapters on Pasadena Los Angeles Santa Barbara Riverside San Diego Sonoma County and Santa Cruz and two chapters on Yosemite. She visited Salt Lake City on the return trip. Flake 2398 describes the relevant section of her book thus: "A visit to Utah after 'polygamy was dead.' She attends a meeting at the Mormon tabernacle." Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz, né le 1er juin 1780 à Burg, près de Magdebourg en Allemagne, et mort le 16 novembre 1831 à Breslau (de nos jours Wroclaw, Pologne), est un officier général et théoricien militaire prussien. Écrivain prolifique, il est l'auteur en particulier d'un traité majeur de stratégie militaire, intitulé De la guerre. " Les écrits de Clausewitz sont une base majeure de la théorie stratégique moderne. Ses idées suscitent toujours des interprétations parfois contradictoires et d'ardentes discussions : l'œuvre de Clausewitz n'était pas destinée, à l'origine, à être publiée. Son traité majeur, De la guerre (Vom Kriege), est avant tout une compilation d'écrits épars. Toutefois, cette imperfection n'empêche pas son œuvre d'être l'une des plus réalistes et des plus complètes en matière de stratégie militaire ; les notions qu'il aborde dépassent largement le simple domaine militaire et influencent un grand nombre de sciences humaines, en particulier la science politique ou l'économie ; ses théories sont essentiellement descriptives : Clausewitz ne cherche pas à imposer des solutions qu'il aurait découvertes au cours de ses campagnes, mais il donne plutôt au lecteur des instruments conceptuels et dialectiques extrêmement puissants, pour lui permettre de saisir toute la complexité de la stratégie et de gérer l'incertitude. C'est ce qui a permis à son œuvre de traverser deux siècles et d'être toujours pertinente. Les controverses qui entourent l'œuvre de Clausewitz résident principalement dans l'interprétation des notions qu'il développe et dans l'importance que chacun des lecteurs a accordé à tel ou tel concept pour soutenir ses propres théories. C'est ce qui explique que tant de personnes aussi diverses que le duc de Wellington, Moltke, Liddell Hart, J. F. C. Fuller, Lénine, Mao Tsé-Toung, George Patton, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry Kissinger, Adolf Hitler, Raymond Aron, Colin Powell, René Girard1, Nelson Mandela, etc., l'aient considéré comme une référence intellectuelle essentielle. On a retrouvé un exemplaire annoté de De la guerre dans une cache d'Al-Qaïda à Tora Bora. L'écrivain et essayiste Guy Debord s'est inspiré des écrits de Clausewitz pour concevoir son Jeu de la Guerre en 1965.... ".‎
