Solzhenisyn a novelist historian poet author of "Cancer Ward" "August 1914" and "The Gulag Archipelago" was unable to deliver this lecture on winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 because of his well-founded fear that going to Stockholm to accept his prize would result in the Soviet government's refusal to allow him to return home. In fact after serving as an artillery officer during WWII spending eight years in a labor camp in the Gulag then exiled for life to a remote town in Kazakhstan Solzhenitsyn was expelled from Russia in 1974 only returning in 1994 after the Soviet Union failed. This is the first printing first U.S. edition as stated. It is the bilingual edition translated by F.D. Reeve and printed here with the original Russian. It is a small book -- about 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches 69 pages with an additional page with brief biographical notes about the author and the translator. Bound in light green cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine and black end papers. The dustjacket's front panel shows a graphic design of a bird in light blue lines against a dark blue background with white and orange lettering. Boards show only a touch of edge wear and light soiling; text is complete clean and unmarked. No noticeable flaws or damage. A single closed 3/4 inch tear in the bottom edge of the front panel near the spine o/w only very minor surface and edge wear. No chipping or creasing not price-clipped. In the lecture Solzhenitsyn notes"To reach this chair from which the Nobel Lecture is delivered.I have mounted not three or four temporary steps but hundreds or even thousands fixed steep covered with ice out of the dark and cold where I was fated to survive but others perhaps more talented stronger than I perished."
