‎Der Su. ist am Rücken lichtrandig. Das untere Kapital ist bestoßen. Das obere Kapital hat eine Druckstelle. Der Kopfschnitt hat einen Fleck. Der Vorderschnitt ist etwas fleckig. Sozialutopie einerseits und Naturrecht anderseits sind zwei Seiten derselben Sache. Wo es der Sozialutopie um menschliches Glück geht, geht es dem Naturrecht um menschliche Würde; wo dieses Verhältnisse konstruiert, in denen die Erniedrigten und Beleidigten aufhören, malte jene Verhältnisse voraus, in denen die Mühseligen und Beladenen aufhören. So tritt Ernst Blochs Buch über »Naturrecht und menschliche Würde« folgerichtig neben seinen großen Entwurf vom »Prinzip Hoffnung«. Auch hier wird die reiche, enzyklopädische Materialausbreitung ergänzt durch philosophische Durchdringung und Kritik. Das neue Buch grenzt Sozialismus und Demokratie nicht nur gegeneinander ab, es versöhnt ebenso beide miteinander, indem es zeigt, daß wahrer Sozialismus ohne demokratische Freiheit so wenig möglich ist wie wahre Demokratie ohne humanen Sozialismus. Es verteidigt Freiheit und Würde des Menschen auf der Grundlage echter, allgemeiner Gleichheit gegen den mißverstandenen Sozialismus wie gegen die mißverstandene Demokratie. Ein solches Buch ist nur dort möglich, wo Freiheit möglich ist, Freiheit zur Kritik, Freiheit zur Voraussicht, Freiheit zur Utopie; es ist unmöglich, wo Freiheit durch Gewalt unterdrückt wird. Gegen solche Zustände richtet es sich vor allem, wie das Tacitus-Zitat am Ende des Buches zeigt: »Der Beschränktheit derer läßt sich lachen, die glauben, daß durch gegenwärtige Gewalt die Erinnerung künftiger Zeit ausgetilgt werden könne.«‎
