‎Rural Manhood Volume I 1910 YMCA‎

‎New York: County Work Department of the International Committee of the Young Men's Christian Associations 1910. Rural Manhood Volume 1 consists of 12 monthly magazine issues bound together for January through December 1910. The magazine was a periodical published from 1910 through 1923 by the YMCA's International Committee which later became the Armed Services YMCA. However the publishing information comes from an opening Editiorial from the January issue and is not stated on a masthead. The book includes a number of black-and-white photographic illustrations maps and charts throughout. There are numerous articles many dealing with different aspects of life in rural America by different authors. The book is bound in green boards with a leather spine and die-stamped gilt spine lettering. There are small chips on the top and bottom of the spine click on photo as well as a tiny hole midway down the spine. The spine tips are rubbed. The boards have some discoloring. The binding itself is secure and the contents are in nice condition with an occasional fingerprint. There's a triangular chip missing from the blank rear free endpaper. The book measures 6 1/4 by 9 1/8 inches. Each magazine section contains 32 pages with a book total of 384 pages. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. ‎Jean Cocteau once called the cinema 'that temple of sex with its goddesses, its guardians and its victims'. That remark forms the theme of this three-part study by the Evening Standard film-critic of the role of sex in the cinema. Alexander Walker's goddesses include Mary Pickford, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. 'Why', he asks, 'was each of these so successful in projecting her sex appeal on celluloid?' His answers involve psychology, ethics, biography, film history and finance...and, of course, the 'guardians'. His guardians are simply the censors, British and American, whether as creators of taste or watch-dogs on morals. In his final section, devoted to victims, the author cites the fates of Mastroianni and Rock Hudson as evidence of the steadily falling graph of male supremacy in Italian and Hollywood sex-comedies.‎

Darwin once called Herbert Spencer "about a dozen times my superior," and on another occasion wrote: "I suspect that hereafter he will be looked at all by far the greatest living philosopher in England; perhaps equal to any that have lived." Despite this prediction, Spencer's reputation underwent a longer period of eclipse after his death than that of anv major thinker of the nineteenth centurv. Bertrand Russell, in his History of Western Philosophy, does not even mention Spencer. The reason was twofold: the principal subject of his investigation--cultural evolution began to lose popularity at the beginning of the twentieth century; also, many of his most illuminating ideas had been almorbed into the general domain of modern thought. A reverse trend has now set in, however. The study of cultural evolution is once again being actively pursued, and Spencer is beginning to be recognized as the thinker who first organized idea; alaout cultural evolution in a way that made intelligible the broad sweep wf human history. There is also renewed recognition of the fact that Spencer was instrumental in winning support for the theorv of organic evolution. This book includes two important sections from Spencer's masterpiece, Principles of Sociology--one dealing with the structure and function of society. and the other with the evolution of the regulative institutions of societv. The editor has provided an illuminating introduction in which he discusses Spencers earlv scientific interest; his ethnological studies, his relation, with his contemporaries, and his literarv output. "Spencer deliberately set out to survey all orders of phenomena. writes Carneiro. "and to show that they were the determinate results of the operation of a universal process.. To this endeavor he brought an extraordinary command of scientific fact and unrivaled powers of synthesis and generalization."‎
