Paris -la Veuve Esitenne and JeanDesaint 1735 Book. Good. Hardcover. A beautifully illustrated copy of this popular work of natural history. In three volumes. Volume I contains the Premiere Partie and is a third edition with an illustration to frontispiece and 23 further plates 14 of which are folding. Volume II contains the Seconde Partie is a Nouvelle edition and contains a frontispiece plus 34 folding plates. Volume III contains the rest of the Seconde Partie and is also a Nouvelle edition. It has a frontispiece followed by a half title and title page and 32 plates 31 of which are folding. The engraved plates depict a wide variety of subjects including butterflies sea creatures plants and flowers machinery maps and scientific diagrams. Noel-Antoine Pluche 13 November 1688 19 November 1761 known as the abbe Pluche was a French priest best-known for this work. Pluche son of a baker was born in Rheims in a street now named after him. He became a teacher of rhetoric. The Bishop of Laon made him head of the town's college a post he accepted to escape judicial consequences of opposing the papal bull Unigenitus 1713. He withdrew in 1749 to La Varenne-Saint-Maur near Paris where he died. His Spectacle de la Nature was published in 1732 and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced many to become naturalists it was a work of popularisation not of science. With a previous owner's inscription to each front free endpaper of one John Brooke. Condition: In calf bindings. Externally sound with shelfwear and cracking to five joints. Internally firmly bound.
