In his 1923 revue ‘London Calling’ Coward burlesqued the Sitwells as “The Swiss Family Whittlebotâ€. As he explains in ‘Present Indicative p.197: “During the first two weeks of the run I received to my intense surprise a cross letter from Osbert Sitwell. In fact so angry was it that I first of all imagined it to be a joke.†During the sketch four poems were recited by “Hernia Whittlebotâ€. The present volume in which Coward has added a further 16 similar verses appears to have been his response to Sitwell’s outrage and one wonders whether the poem “To Nöel Coward†beginning “Pale faced rat! / Wallowing in the pit of middle-class degeneracy. / Juggling clumsily with the immortal souls / Of your superiors. / Illogically defying the very canons of beauty†accurately reflects the tone and content of Sitwell’s letter. As Coward goes on to note: “shortly afterwards another letter arrived even crosser than the first.†Coward’s response this time was more public: the volume ‘Chelsea Buns by Hernia Whittlebot’ published by Hutchinson in 1925. “To this day†says Coward writing in 1936 “I am still a little puzzled as to why that light-hearted burlesque should have aroused him his brother and sister to such paroxysms of fury. But the fact remains that it did and I believe still does.†The vertical crease noted in the covers and faintly visible throughout as an undulation on the more flexible paper of the text occurs on several of the surviving copies of this pamphlet and may suggest that they were posted to Coward’s friends folded into a ‘legal’ sized envelope. It at least distinguishes the present copy from the small residue of unissued copies sold off by the Noël Coward society a few years ago which created a temporary illusion of availability. The ‘erratum’ noted in our description ‘Nöel’ for ‘Noël’ occurs throughout and is presumably intentional though in the Contents the diaeresis is reduced to a single dot.
