01-01- 1876. Wood engraving black and white double page from Harper's Weekly January 1 1876. Image size 21 x 14 inches on sheet 22 x 16 centrefold as issued. Several short archivally repaired edge tears at upper and lower edge spot at upper right of image area not very noticeable as it looks like part of the design overall very good condition. Thomas Nast most well known in his day as a political cartoonist and the originator of such symbols as the Republican Elephant and the Democratic Donkey also developed our image of Santa Claus. Taking the stiff unsmiling Saint Nicholas image from Europe Nast turned him into the fat jolly pipe smoking creature that gives so much pleasure to children around the world today. In this image parents peek in as their children wait by the fireplace to catch a glimpse of Santa not visible yet!. . unknown

Complete issue of Harper's Weekly for January 15 1870 16 x 11 inches with two single centrefold wood engravings cover page wood engraving and 4 other full pages of wood engraved illustrations. Magazine with disbound spine short tears and light toning to edges occasional foxing small hole punch through mid right margin of pages not affecting illustrations. The Thomas Nast cartoon on the back cover of this newspaper A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion represents his first use of the donkey to represent the Democratic party; this symbolism dates to the late 1820s but Nast's extensive use of the donkey secured its place as the Democratic symbol just as his cartoons identified the elephant with the Republican vote. There are also two lovely single page illustrations of children with vintage toys at Christmas: "A Dream of Toys" and "The Dream Realized" and a single page illustration of Jewish interest: "High-Priest at Nablus Reading the Pentateuch" with accompanying article. .
