The German Baron Grimm was introduced to Parisian literary society through his friendship with Jean Jacques Rousseau and this led to a close association with the Encyclop�distes in particular with Denis Diderot. In 1753 he began a literary correspondence with various German sovereigns which he managed to carry on during temporary absences from France with the help of Diderot and Mme d��pinay. The correspondence consisted of two letters a month until 1773 and Grimm eventually counted among his subscribers Catherine II of Russia Stanislas Poniatowski King of Poland and many princes of the smaller German states. His correspondence which embraces the entire period from 1753 to 1790 was strictly confidential and was not divulged during his lifetime. It is one of the most celebrated of the eighteenth century. "At first Grimm contented himself with enumerating the chief current views in literature and art and indicating very slightly the contents of the principal new books but gradually his criticism became more extended and trenchant and he touched on nearly every subject � political literary artistic social and religious � which interested the Parisian society of the time. His notices of contemporaries are somewhat severe and he exhibits the foibles and selfishness of the society in which he moved; but he was unbiased in his literary judgments and time has only served to confirm his criticisms. In style and manner of expression he is thoroughly French. He is generally somewhat cold in his appreciation but his literary taste is delicate and subtle; and it was the opinion of Sainte-Beuve that the quality of his thought in his best moments will compare not unfavourably even with that of Voltaire. Les six volumes de la première série (1753-1769) donnés par Michaud et Chéron et parus en 1813.II. Les cinq volumes de la seconde série (1770-1782) procurés par Salgues et parus dès 1812 parce cette seconde partie était estimée la plus intéressante pour le lecteur. Dans le premier volume de celle-ci, figure une notice sur Grimm.III. Les cinq volumes de la troisième série (partie des années 1775-1776 et 1782-1790) publiés par Suard en 1813.IV. ‎Edition originale de ce célèbre et important journal du XVIIIe siècle, curieux périodique manuscrit publié en français de 1748 à 1793 et dont apparemment la quinzaine d’abonnés étaient des nobles d’Europe du Nord (le futur Gustave III de Suède, la reine de Suède), d’Europe Centrale (Prusse, Pologne, Saxe, Hesse, Deux Ponts, etc.). Manuscrit, ce périodique va échapper à toute censure puisque celle-ci s’occupait surtout des imprimés ; par contre, il sera censuré en 1812 et 1813 lors de la première édition... Donc, de 1750 à 1790, Grimm envoyait, une ou plusieurs fois par mois, des informations à l'impératrice de Russie, à la reine de Suède, au roi de Pologne et à quelques autres personnages princiers qui le rémunéraient largement ; il en adressait même des copies à quelques particuliers qui lui payaient un abonnement annuel de trois cents livres. Aidé par quelques collaborateurs, par Diderot notamment, il tenait ses correspondants au courant du mouvement littéraire et philosophique, ainsi que des principaux évènements parisiens. Cette correspondance, remarquable par ses appréciations critiques, fut recueillie et publiée pour la première fois en 1812-1813. La majeure partie des articles qu'il renferme sont de Grimm lui-même, avec également des textes de Diderot, de Voltaire, de Rousseau, etc. — Détail : trois parties reliées en 16 volumes : Première partie : depuis 1753 jusqu'en 1769 (6 volumes) – Seconde partie : depuis 1770 jusqu'en 1782 (5 volumes) – Troisième et dernière partie : pendant une partie des années 1775-1776, et pendant les années 1782 à 1790 inclusivement (5 volumes) ; auxquels on ajoute le volume : “Correspondance inédite de Grimm et Diderot. Recueil de lettres, poésies, morceaux et fragmens retranchés par la censure impériale en 1812 et 1813” [édité par Luglien-François Thory]. P., Fournier Jeune, 1829, reliure demi-veau glacé fauve, dos orné en long (dos de la reliure abîmé, intérieur propre) ; soit 17 volumes au total.‎
