A Child's Dream of a Star
Boston: Fields Osgood & Co. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1871. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full brown leather bevelled edges spine in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering in two compartments embossed tooling in remainder medallions and borders blind-stamped on front and rear covers a.e.g. gilt dentelles marbled endpapers Illustrated with 11 tissue-protected drawings by Hammett Billings engraved by W. J. Linton. This story first appeared in the second issue of Dickens's new weekly "Household Words" 6 April 1850. It subsequently appeared in several American periodicals including "Spirit of the Age" published in Woodstock VT on 23 May 1850 then in "Harper's." Its first appearance in any book was in "Reprinted Pieces" in 1858. This volume is its first appearance as a separate volume. No separate edition was printed in the U.K. until 1899. Dickens told one of his biographers that as a child he used to wander at night about a churchyard near their home with his sister. This sister died only two years before this poetic fantasy was written. Perhaps it was the sincerity of his grief for this lost sister which keeps this story as simple as it is in its sentiment. . Cover mildly rubbed spine and corners moderately worn gilt faded previous owners' names on fep else fine. NEAR FINE. B&W engravings. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. iv 15 11-plates pp .
