‎Hard Times. For These Times.‎

‎London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition in book form of Dickens' attack on the living conditions of England's mid-19th century industrial cities. Octavo original green cloth blindstamped with gilt titles to the spine including the "Price 5/-" in gilt at the base of the spine and p.244 misnumbered as 44. In near fine condition with the half-title present which is often lacking. Housed in a custom three quarter morocco and chemise slipcase. Initially published serially in Household Words between April and August of 1854 Hard Times was published in book form almost immediately following the final serial in 1854. Viewed as a departure from Dickens' previous tales the work presents what was to become an increasingly somber picture of contemporary society in Dickens' works. Critics such as George Bernard Shaw and Thomas Macaulay focused on Dickens' treatment of trade unions and his post-Industrial Revolution pessimism in regards to the divide between capitalist mill owners and undervalued workers during the Victorian era. F. R. Leavis a great admirer of the book included it - but not as a whole - in his Great Tradition of English novels. Bradbury & Evans hardcover books‎

‎Household Words 19 Volumes including a last Volume Selection from Household Words James Miller N.Y.last issue dated May 28 1859‎

‎London or New York 1859. A mixed set some with London imprints. Volumes I-IV & XIII Office 16 Wellington Street and some with New York Dix and Edwards Vols. VI & VII New York: McElbrath and Barker Vol. VIII etc. 20 vols. 8vo. Original green blind-stamped pebbled cloth. One volume slightly split rest very fresh. Bookplate of St. Paul's School ex dono plate of Mr. Francis F. Randolph small unobtrusive blind stamp on title pages. A mixed set some with London imprints. Volumes I-IV & XIII Office 16 Wellington Street and some with New York Dix and Edwards Vols. VI & VII New York: McElbrath and Barker Vol. VIII etc. 20 vols. 8vo. Household Words was considerably more popular in England than America and its publishing history in America is "almost absolutely dark as is the whole subject of periodical printing and 'arrangements' . The 1850's were years of copyright agitation in America and certainly no legally protective arrangements were possible to the English publishers before the journal was discontinued in 1859. And it is not surprising that the course of Household Words was not so brilliant in American as was that of its successor All the Year Round . It was partially a local work and not quite so interesting to an America as to an English reader; it had changed publishers too often; there was no legitimate arrangement between the English proprietors and the American publishers; it was sold at too high a price; it had been published by inexperienced people and therefore had not received proper publicity and promotion; and its lack of pictorial illustration made it unpopular with the masses" Buckler William E. "'Household Words' in America" in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America vol. 45 pp. 160-66.

Household Words was published every Wednesday from March 1850 to May 1859. unknown books‎

‎IS SHE HIS WIFE‎

‎1877. or Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. Original green cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition being a volume in Osgood's diminutive "Vest-Pocket Series." We say first "collectible" edition of this play first performed in 1837 because the only known copy of the first edition from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879 and there are only five known copies three of which are in institutions of the wrappered second edition London circa 1869-1871. This copy is in bright green cloth; others are in terra-cotta cloth without priority. It is a fine bright copy -- the only flaw being a short closed tear in the edge of the front free endpaper the front paste-down bears the armorial bookplate of Courtenay F. Wilson 1841-1915. Podeschi Yale B62; Eckel pp 159-161. ‎IS SHE HIS WIFE‎

‎Dickens Charles. IS SHE HIS WIFE Boston: James R. Osgood 1877. First American edition first state of binding with correct monogram. Original terra cotta cloth gilt. Mild rubbing at spine ends a couple of stray marks but a very good bright copy of this scarce "comic burletta." In 1876 James T. Fields acquired the only known copy of the original 1837 edition and used it to produce this edition; his unique copy was destroyed when his library burned in December 1879. A British reprint itself rarely seen appeared in 1883. This volume was part of Osgood's 102 volume vest-pocket series which included Twain's rare A TRUE STORY and several Hawthorne Emerson and Lowell titles that are also seldom seen. Books in this series were published only in terra cotta or green cloth with no priority between the two colors and the print runs ran from 500 to 1250 copies per title. ‎Is She His Wife‎

‎First Obtainable Printing of "Is She His Wife or Something Singular" DICKENS Charles. Is She His Wife or Something Singular. A Comic Burletta in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. First obtainable printing. Sixteenmo. 80pp. Original brown cloth decoratively blocked in black and blind lettered in gilt and black. Off-white endpapers printed in red. A fine bright copy. Housed in a custom maroon cloth slipcase black morocco label on spine gilt-stamped. Apparently no copy exists of the first 1837 edition of this play Dickensí third published play first performed 6 March 1837; this is the only published work by Dickens to which this situation applies. The Gimbel collection has playbills for performances on 13 March and 6 April 1837. Eckel mentions that the only known copy of this edition was at Osgood for their 1877 reprint and was subsequently destroyed in a fire there in 1879. A census in Eckel finds only three extant copies of the 1873 British reprint. Thus the Osgood reprint of 1877 is the first obtainable printing of this piece. The Gimbel collection does have a copy of the 1873 English probably the one mentioned by Eckel as lacking the back wrapper; the extensive McQuire collection of American Dickens did not have a copy; Vander Poel had both green and brick cloth variants of the 1877 as did Gimbel. ‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First Edition in the Original Cloth
A Very Early Issue Bound From The Original Parts

DICKENS Charles. The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby. With Illustrations by Phiz. London: Chapman and Hall 1839.

First edition a very early issue bound from the original parts. With thirty-five of Smith's forty-one first issue internal flaws including all of the major points first state frontispiece and all further plates mostly first state including the first four typically in second state with imprint of Chapman and Hall.

Octavo 8 7/8 x 5 1/4 in; 225 x 133 mm. xvi 624 pp. Forty black and white plates including frontispiece.

Publishers primary binding in dark olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth covers stamped in blind spine lettered in gilt. With the bookplate of the Earl of Aylesford. An unusually bright copy with just the lightest of wear and without any fading to cloth whatsoever. Some light foxing to plates but far less than usually found in this title. Two neat three-quarter inch closed splits to upper joint at head and tail and one short closed split to lower joint at head.

The nicest copy we have ever seen unsophisticated and near fine: better than the famed William E. Self copy which is bumped rubbed and shows distress to the spine Christie's-NY April 2 2008 lot 60. Housed in a full plum pigskin drop-front clamshell box.

With an ALs with original autograph envelope by Dickens to one Thomas Ellis Bramale Esq. dated August 5 1839:

"Sir I have very great pleasure in complying with your request and beg to thank you cordially for the obliging expressions with which it is accompanied. I am Sir Your very obedient servant Charles Dickens."

Nicholas Nickleby was originally published in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last part as a double number from April 1838 through October 1839. The first edition in book form was made up from these parts. "It was the novelist's intention to expose in this story the terrible abuses practiced in the cheap boarding-schools of Yorkshire and in order that he realize their true character he determined to investigate for himself the real facts as to the condition of those notorious seminaries Accordingly at the end of January 1838 he and 'Phiz' started on this memorable journey in bitterly cold weather and visiting several schools in the locality they came into direct contact with the proprietors. One of these was William Shaw the identical schoolmaster who some years previously had been heavily fined for what was represented at the trial as gross maltreatment of his pupils" Kitton Dickens and His Illustrators p. 75. It was Shaw upon whom Dickens based the infamous Squeers. Having made an enemy of his uncle Ralph Nickolas was sent as an usher to Dotheboys Hall where Wackford Squeers starved and maltreated forty students under the pretense of education. "The character of Mrs. Nickleby was largely founded upon that of Dickens's mother. The title character was founded on Dickens's brother-in-law Hanry Burnett a music teacher at Manchester" Hayward The Dickens Encyclopedia p. 115.

"H.K. Browne prepared 39 illustrations for this novel as well as the cover for the monthly parts while the portrait frontispiece was engraved by Finden from a painting by Maclise. Because of the the large monthly circulation of the parts Browne etched as many as four plates in some cases of each illustration and all of them were printed in the initial issue of the parts. Many of the plates from 'Miss Nickleby introduced to her uncle's friends' page 175 onward contain Arabic or Roman numerals which indicate the order in which they were etched. Most of the numerals are located in the lower right corner and occasionally in the left. Hatton and Cleaver state that the numeral for Plate 31 'Mysterious appearance of the gentleman in the small-clothes' p. 487 appears on the front of the mantleshelf. The first state of the frontispiece and the first four illustrations contain the imprint of Chapman and Hall. The first state of the frontispiece always appears in the monthly parts; the first four illustrations were issued with and without the imprint in the parts but the plates without imprints did not appear in the earlier issues of the monthly parts and may therefore be termed 'second states''' Smith I 5.

Smith Part I 5. ‎Lithographic Facsimile Letter to the Rev. Stephen Roose Hughes 10 January 1860 Conveying a Proof for All the Year Round subsequently collected as chapter two The Shipwreck in The Uncommercial Traveller‎

‎N.p. London 1861. Lithographic facsimile printing of the original autograph letter. Two pages printed in blue-black ink on laid paper. 1 vols. Oblong 4to. Old fold. Lithographic facsimile printing of the original autograph letter. Two pages printed in blue-black ink on laid paper. 1 vols. Oblong 4to. Uncommon printed facsimile of this notable letter from Charles Dickens writing as the editor of All the Year Round to Rev. Hughes of St Gallgo's Church whose heroic efforts at the time of the wreck of the Royal Charter off the coast of Anglesey in August 1859 inspired Dickens to write the "little article" mentioned here published in All the Year Round for 28 January and subsequently adapted as the first chapter of The Uncommercial Traveller. The invitation extended by Dickens to the minister and his family is poignant as the strain of the exertions contributed to Hughes' untimely death on 4 February 1862.

In the British Academy/Pilgrim Edition of Dickens' letters the original letter is recorded as in the collection of Mrs. A.K. Frazer; it is further noted that "facsimiles of this letter were sold by Hughes to provide a monument now in Llanallgo Church to those drowned in the Royal Charter." This allows a narrow dating to 1860 or 1861. No copies of this facsimile are recorded in the Gimbel collection in other major Dickens holdings or in OCLC.

The facsimile reproduces Dickens' Office of All the Year Round letterhead in monochrome slightly reduced and the text is as follows:

My Dear Mr Hughes
You will receive from my printer's office by this same post a Proof of the little article I have written on the subject of my late visit. I am under the necessity of asking you to send it back to W. Wills here by return of post. For although a fortnight will elapse before it is published the mechanical necessities of this Journal and its simultaneous publication in England and America render its going to press at once imperative.
I doubt whether I am quite right respecting the number of the drowned buried in your churchyard and the greatest number that lay in the church at one time. Will you do me the favour to correct me on those points And if you should observe any similar inaccuracy will you do me the additional kindness to mark it I trust that there is nothing in the article that you or your household will find displeasing. I have written it out of the honest convictions of my heart and in the hope that it will at least soften the distress of many people from whom you have not yet heard. It says for me all that I should otherwise have attempted to say in this note and merely strives to express what any visitor to you must surely feel.
My daughters have taken a great interest in all I have told them and particularly in Mrs Hughes's idea of coming to London in the summer. They earnestly beg me to assure her and you that they hope to know you both very well and that it will be an uncommon gratification to them if you will come and see us down at my Kentish house on the top of Shakespeare's Gad's Hill which is little more than an hour's railway ride from town.
I beg to present my true regard to the ladies of your house and to your brother and to assure you of the hearty esteem and respect with which I am Very faithfully yours
Charles Dickens.
This same post will also bring you the documents you also lent me returned with thanks. ‎LITTLE DORRIT‎

‎1857. Illustrated Edition. Two Volumes Complete in One. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson n.d. 1857. Original half calf with marbled boards endpapers and page edges. First American illustrated octavo edition. The first Peterson volume of LITTLE DORRIT in fact the first in book form anywhere was Vol I of the two-volume duodecimo edition published in November 1856 during serialization; in June 1857 once serialization was complete Peterson quickly published the novel in numerous duodecimo including Vol II of the above and octavo formats. One octavo double-column format consists of 317 pages of text -- issued first without illustrations in wrappers or in cloth and soon thereafter with plates inserted. Another octavo format this one has 376 pages of text with the illustrations integrated into the text some sideways. This copy is in contemporary half calf with marbled boards page edges and endpapers. Peterson advertised that his octavo editions of Dickens were available to buyers in four different bindings of half calf in addition to cloth and we have seen numerous volumes in this exact binding -- leading us to believe that this is a publisher's original binding. Stab-holes are evident in the gutter of all leaves -- possibly indicating that it was originally bound up by Peterson in wrappers then put into his standard half calf. Condition is very good with minor rubbing at the extremities. See Podeschi D25. unknown books‎
