Variant binding no priority with "LONDON MDCCCLVII" in gilt at foot a variant not noted by Smith but recorded elsewhere. The "octavo novels" have become extremely difficult to find in original cloth in decent condition and nice copies of this work in this binding fetch five to ten times as much for example Sotheby London 11 July 1996 sale 6412 lot 165 $3680 spine sunned. Dicken's second novel to deal with the injustice of imprisonment for debt. The character Flora Finching was based on his early love Maria Beadnell and while the novel was being published Dickens' marital problems became public knowledge. Two frontispieces 130 woodcuts and twenty-five initials by Browne; one frontispiece and thirty-eight woodcuts by Cattermole; one woodcut each by S. Williams and Maclise.<br/><br/>Publisher's dark purple-brown rib-grain blind-stamped cloth with primary clock design stamped in gilt on front covers spines lettered and tooled in gilt. Original Spanish hair-vein marbled endpapers in black blue and red all edges marbled. Some minor wear to top of spines minimal fading to covers the gilt bright and fresh. Some light scattered foxing to throughout. An excellent set. With the armorial bookplate of Barbara Hylton Madge on front paste-downs and also the early in signature of Agnes Barron 1841 on all three front blanks.<br/><br/>"Being a hard sleeper likewise he divided his time pretty equally between these two recreations always falling asleep when he had done eating and always taking another turn at the trencher when he had done sleeping by which means he grew more corpulent and more drowsy every day of his life." - Charles Dickens Master Humphrey's Clock<br/><br/>Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 4 April 1840 to 4 December 1841. It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends which includes Mr. Pickwick and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories were included followed by the novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. It is generally thought that Dickens originally intended The Old Curiosity Shop as a short story like the others that had appeared in Master Humphrey's Clock but after a few chapters decided to extend it into a novel. Master Humphrey appears as the first-person narrator in the first three chapters of The Old Curiosity Shop but then disappears stating "And now that I have carried this history so far in my own character and introduced these personages to the reader I shall for the convenience of the narrative detach myself from its further course and leave those who have prominent and necessary parts in it to speak and act for themselves."<br/><br/>Master Humphrey is a lonely man who lives in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique longcase clock by the chimney-corner. One day he decides that he would start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members would read out their manuscripts to the others. The members include Master Humphrey; a deaf gentleman Jack Redburn; retired merchant Owen Miles; and Mr. Pickwick from The Pickwick Papers. A mirror club in the kitchen Mr. Weller's Watch run by Mr. Weller has members including Humphrey's maid the barber and Sam Weller.<br/>Master Humphrey's Clock appeared after The Old Curiosity Shop to introduce Barnaby Rudge. After Barnaby Rudge Master Humphrey is left by himself by the chimney corner in a train of thoughts. Here the deaf gentleman continues the narration. Later the deaf gentleman and his friends return to Humphrey's house to find him dead. Humphrey has left money for the barber and the maid no doubt by traces of love that they would be married. Redburn and the deaf gentleman look after the house and the club closes for good.<br/><br/>In the portion of Master Humphrey's Clock which succeeds The Old Curiosity Shop Master Humphrey reveals to his friends that he is the character referred to as the 'single gentleman' in that story.<br/><br/>Provenance: With the armorial bookplate of Barbara Hylton Madge 1882-1967 on front paste-downs. Barbara Hylton Madge was the wife of Lieut. Col. C.A. Madge and mother to John Madge who wrote The Origins of Science Sociology. His brother Charles Henry Madge who was a poet journalist and a literary figure from his early twenties and founder of Mass Observation.<br/><br/>Smith I 6. ‎Master Humphrey's Clock.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1840. First edition of this collection of short stories which originally appeared as a weekly periodical of the same name. Large octavo 3 volumes bound into one in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments between raised gilt bands marbled endpapers all edges marbled three engraved frontispieces illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition. Armorial bookplate to the pastedown name. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens the magazine included both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. Large octavo 3 volumes bound into one in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine raised gilt bands red morocco spine label engraved frontispieces illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition. ‎Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition. Octavo. First issue with the last plate without a border edited by Boz. In two volumes 288 and 263pp. illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt all edge marbled with matching endpapers occasional spots of foxing to plates. A very good set. Richard Bentley unknown books‎

‎MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH GRIMALDI‎

‎1838. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 36 pp undated Vol II ads. Original pink cloth embossed with flowers with gilt-decorated spines. First Edition of this early Dickens piece worked on after OLIVER TWIST and before NICHOLAS NICKLEBY -- during the time leading up to his break with the publisher Bentley. There has been considerable controversy regarding just how much Dickens contributed to this book. We quote from Johnson's biography: Bentley had acquired a life of the famous clown Grimaldi longwindedly and clumsily arranged by Thomas Egerton Wilks from autobiographical notes. He Bentley proposed that Dickens revise it. Dickens stipulated that his name should appear only as editor not as author and demanded a minimum of 300 pounds and a half share of the profits after deduction of expenses to which Bentley agreed. Dickens did no original writing except for an introductory and possibly a concluding chapter. His revisions mostly drastic abridgement he dictated to his father who vastly enjoyed his exalted office as amanuensis. This copy is in the primary binding of pink cloth embossed with a floral design with a clown in gilt holding the title on each spine. It also has the last plate in Vol II in the first state without the "grotesque" border that was added around Cruikshank's plate -- the border was removed for the subsequent 1846 one-volume edition. Condition is very good: as always the pink spines are a little faded and there is very slight shelfwear at the binding extremities there is also a discreet signature at the top of each title page; the original pale yellow endpapers are present and uncracked and foxing of the plates is generally limited to the two frontispieces. In all rather nice condition for these very fragile volumes. Gimbel B64; Carr B599; Eckel pp 140-142; Johnson p. 242. unknown books‎

After the legendary pantomime's death Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". ‎MR. NIGHTINGALE'S DIARY‎

‎1877. A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series" so named for its diminutive size a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE. This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green without priority. It is a bright near-fine copy minor rubbing at the tips one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5. <br/><br/> hardcover books‎
