Singerman 2085 for the 126 page edition. <br> Singerman notes that he the "compiler saw the rarer 124 page edition without the publisher's statement about Dickens. " <br> This is that true rarer first printing dedicated to Charles Dickens but without reproducing his warm letter thanking her as appeared in later printings. <br> The success of this book meant that later editions appeared the same year in London as well as in the US published by Lippincott but with more pages 141 & 126 respectively and with the Dickens letter reproduced. <br> Includes some poems with Jewish themes such as "Judith 'Oh forget not that I am Judith! /And I know where sleeps Holofernes' " "Hear O Israel 'The God of Jacob is our Shield' " etc. <br> <br> Menken 1835-1868 was "Internationally famous for her starring role in the equestrian melodrama Mazeppa in which she was stripped on stage to a flesh-colored body stocking lashed to the back of the 'wild horse of Tartary' and sent flying on a narrow ramp above the theater. Adah Isaacs Menken consistently defied social mores. She cropped her black hair and smoked cigarettes and publicly disparaged conventional married life. Menken represented an early example of the cult of personality blurring her private life with her public persona. <br> She married four times in the course of seven years. Her second marriage in 1859 was to the heavyweight boxing champion of the world John C. Heenan. <br> One of the most glamorous celebrities of the 1860s Menken also cultivated a literary following. She wrote poetry and developed relationships with the likes of Walt Whitman Charles Dickens Dante Gabriel Rossetti Alexandre Dumas and Algernon Swinburne. George Sand was a close friend to the actor and was godmother to Menken's second child. <br> A major bone of contention to this day is the authenticity of her Jewishness. Though scholars have some evidence that Menken was raised a Catholic and converted to Judaism only after marrying her first husband Menken herself once publicly rebuked a journalist who labeled her a convert by announcing that she was 'born in that faith Judaism and have adhered to it through all my erratic career. Through that pure and simple religion I have found greatest comfort and blessing.'<br> Whatever her origins it is clear that Menken was fervently Jewish in her adult life. <br> After moving to Cincinnati with her first and only Jewish husband Alexander Isaacs Menken Adah learned Hebrew fluently studied classical Jewish texts and contributed many poems and essays to The Israelite a weekly founded by Rabbi Isaac M. Wise. Her poems indicate a passionate temperament deeply committed to a kind of proto-Zionism and even messianism. Many are collected in the posthumously published volume Infelicia this volume. <br> Menken viewed herself as a modern Deborah calling on Jews to rise up against persecution in Turkey and protesting the kidnapping of a six-year-old Jewish boy in Bologna by representatives of the Catholic Church. She was one of the few Jews in America to protest when Lionel Nathan was denied the seat in the English Parliament to which he had been elected. And at the height of her acting career she refused to perform on Jewish High Holidays. On her deathbed at age thirty-three suffering from what may have been peritonitis or tuberculosis or both and treated by the personal doctor of Napoleon III Menken was visited by a rabbi. <br> Adah Isaacs Menken died on August 10 1868 in Paris. She is buried in the Jewish section of Montparnasse Cemetery" Ackerman 2014. <br> <br> The book is cited in Podeschi J. B. Dickens & Dickensiana B2952; Wolff R. L. 19th cent. Ballooning and Victorian Music Hall. Anonymous Manuscript of the lyrics of two comic songs: 'Balooning sic' inspired by a piece in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' and Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'.
Without place or date. London Circa 1865. 3pp. foolscap 8vo. On a bifolium of laid paper. In fair condition aged and worn. The first poem 'Balooning sic' covers both sides of the first leaf. No evidence has been discovered that this poem was ever published but it is inspired by the exploits of 'Mr. Green' in a humorous essay titled 'Ballooning' which appeared in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' on 25 October 1851. The choice of two phrases 'pipes & backy' and 'Mounted Meershaums' is given in the present manuscript these variants perhaps suggesting that this item is authorial rather than a transcription. The second poem which covers the recto of the second leaf the verso being undated is untitled in the manuscript but is Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way' which was published in 1865 in London by Henri D'Alcorn George Henry Stannard Allcorn. ONE: 'Balooning sic'. 2pp. The poem is forty-eight lines long divided into twelve stanzas each stanza followed by the refrain 'Fal de ral.' The present poem begins: '1st. Verse When the London people used to think of going out of Town They'd take a Stage & that would to the Country take 'em down But Mister Green has lately proved as clear's the sun at noon The finest way to take the air is to take an air balloon - Fal de lal. 2. The other day when Mister Green went out just for a fly He took up two companions for a ride towards the sky Though Lords & Butler thus ventured up they found the difference soon For they were all reduced to Carmen when they rode in the Balloon Fal de ral.' The poem describes their journey made without 'fears of Highwaymen'. In the ninth stanza the travellers 'take their pipes & backy out' and the word 'backy' is glossed with the variant reading for 'pipes & backy' at the foot of the second page: 'Mounted Meershaums out.' The final stanza reads: '12. Now we find that different trav'lers will travel diff'rent ways Some like a railroad some a stage & some a Horse & Chaise Some being fond of water think a steam boat quite exquisite But there's nothing like an air balloon to pay a flying visit. Fal de ral'. TWO: Untitled Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'. 1p. Twenty-four lines in eight stanzas. Begins: '1 We smile at the unnecessary trouble people take For fortune is not regulated by the fuss we make. I don't advise indifference but this I mean to say: Its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' The poem was hugely popular being described as 'a certain sort of comic singing which I can't stand' by a character in Fun magazine 2 September 1865. The American impressario Tony Pastor 1837-1908 published a version of the poem in New York in 1868 without the following stanza of the present manuscript: 'To rise in your opinion most earnestly I hope But promise you I'll never mount the trapeze or the rope: I fancy in the long run that common sense will pay; And its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' It is the story of Mr. Dombey a wealthy shipping merchant whose wife dies while giving birth to their second child- Paul a long-desired son and heir. Ogdensburg NY: Caliban Press 2017. Fine. Number 63 of about 110 copies signed and numbered by the highly regarded book artist and printer Mark McMurray. This is a beautifully produced new edition of A Christmas Carol that captures the power of this timeless story through the inventive use of text images paper type and binding. McMurray writes in the prospectus: "We know the story we know the characters but the language of the text offers new rewards with each reading. This edition of Dickens' classic returns to the dark sleep-deprived angst of the original complete text." The prospectus states that the text in this edition comes from the 1843 edition with minor corrections. Printed on a variety of handmade and mould-made papers including Zerkal Ingres and papers from La Papeterie-St. Armand. The text is printed entirely from metal and wood types including monotype Bell plus many from the 19th century. There are wonderful images of the ghosts that visit Scrooge on that fateful night and many other ornaments and designs throughout. They are done in various media including pochoir collage wood engraving and relief blocks. Bound in black ribbed flexible covers with a red morocco leather spine with title in gilt on spine and inside a cutout on the front cover. Housed in a stiff black paper slipcase with a subtle chain design. In fine condition. 7.5 x 10.5 inches. 107 pages. PRI/121725. Caliban Press unknown

Text entirely legible throughout but on worn and creased paper MP is not named as the author but the item is undoubtedly his work: one of the two copies has autograph emendations in pencil. ONE: Typed Notes for ‘Dickens Fellowship Speech’. 2pp 4to. Begins: ‘Comment on previous speaker’s points. / Dickens the great Englishman - more than that the great man of the Middle Classes. "Dickens' novels present a variety of depictions of family life from the 'happy families' such as the Nubbles in "The Old Curiosity Shop" and the Toodles in "Dombey and Son" to the families impaired by the absence of one or more members of the nuclear group like David Copperfield who has never known his father and the motherless Paul Dombey. The 'happy families' are typically working-class industrious and equally notable for cheerfulness and cleanliness; they perhaps represent to some extent not only a democratic contrast with the failings and corruptions of middle-class families but a sentimental wish fulfilment or idealization of the kind of family that Dickens would have liked to have grown up in. His own family life had much more closely resembled the ramshackle insecure existence of the Micawbers in "David Copperfield". In all these ways and many others Dickens never ceased to explore in his imaginative writings the dynamics and tensions of family life. The third edition of this charming ballad collaboration between Charles Dickens and George Cruikshank complete with the latter's amusing cartoons. The third edition. Illustrated with eleven plates. In other copies one of the plates is bound as the frontispiece however in this copy the plates are bound throughout the text. Collated complete. A charming poem by Charles Dickens the last of his collaborations with George Cruikshank. This poem began life when Cruikshank overheard a cockney version of the traditional ballad outside a public house subsequently repeating it to Dickens who revamped it into this version here. The authorship of this poem has seen a lot of debate with people believing that William Makepeace Thackeray was the author and that Dickens provided the notes and preface however it seems that Cruikshank told people that Dickens wrote the ballad for him.Illustrations by George Cruikshank the well known caricaturist. Bound the publisher's original cloth boards rebacked on full green morocco. Externally very good with rubbing to the joints and extremities. 'Lot 97' label to front board. Beautifully bound Edwardian edition of the Christmas classic featuring a Vellucent vignette binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath. After the success of A CHRISTMAS CAROL Dickens continued to produced "little Christmas books" in order to meet demand that swelled for the holiday season then as now the busiest time for booksellers. First published in 1845 CRICKET ON THE HEARTH is the third in the series featuring a drama of domestic happiness that picks up on themes from the Ghost of Christmas Past scene in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. This copy was bound by Chivers of Bath in the trademark style he developed that was also a landmark in the history of book design: the Vellucent binding. In this technique a painted design is protected by the addition of a layer of vellum so thin that it is translucent giving it the appearance of a delicate glass window. A striking copy of the beloved Victorian tale. 7'' x 4.5''. Contemporary tan morocco by Cedric Chivers stamped with elegant gilt ornaments central Vellucent title vignette to front board. Top edge gilt marbled endpapers. Illustrated by Brock with 8 full-page color plates as well as black-and-white vignettes. 171 1 pages. Folio. 416pp. Partially unopened. Contemporary blue paper boards with paper spine nearly perished. Front board detached rear board nearly so. Water staining to first several leaves at fore-edge some foxing else very good in contemporary binding. Mott I pp. 223-246. Complete second volume of an important Federalist literary magazine founded in Philadelphia in 1801 and edited by Joseph Dennie 1768-1812 under the pen name "Oliver Oldschool Esq." Dennie is best remembered for his essay series entitled "The Lay Preacher" which were mostly didactic but not always religious. Asbury Dickens 1780-1861 was a Philadelphia bookseller and later US diplomat and politician but as a young man was involved in an unknown incident serious enough to make him flee to London in 1801 and he ended his partnership in the paper at the end of 1802. The second volume of the Port Folio contains several points of interest. Among them are John Quincy Adams' translation of Baron von Bulow's highly critical Der Freistaat von Nordamerika 1797; a dark recounting of Little Red Riding Hood in which she meets a bloody end first published in London in Tales of Terror 1801; an obituary notice for Marth Washington in the June 5th issue; and five satirical poems about Thomas Jefferson's affair with the enslaved Sally Hemmings. In subsequent years Dennis wrote scathing attacks on Jeffersonian Democracy and would be sued for seditious libel; although he was acquitted the Port Folio's critiques soon leveled off. Despite Dennie's death from cholera in 1812 the Port Folio survived until 1827 though in a monthly format. unknown
