Crudely bound into a stiff brown folder with white linen tape lacking the original wrappers. The head and tail of the stiff folder's spine and bottom corner of the front cover are chipped. The folder's spine is splitting. 176 deckle-edged pages in all printed in 2 columns consisting of 1 leaf and pages 19-192. There are a couple of small tears along the stitching at the inner edge of the title page. There is minor dampstaining to the top inner corner of the first few pages and the last page is slightly soiled. Good. <p>Although no date is listed the inclusion of Dickens' story "Our Mutual Friend" in the list of titles he authored would indicate this work was published after 1865.<p>Charles Dickens edited this autobiographical work on the 18th Century English performer who according to The Guardian "invented the figure of the classic clown we know today". Dickens contributed a 4-page introductory chapter. The Italian immigrant Grimaldi was the first to use white-faced makeup and performed in outrageous colored clothes. He was a friend of Lord Byron and Edmund Kean. Beneath the mask Grimaldi's life was filled with tragedy. Uncommon printed facsimile of this notable letter from Charles Dickens writing as the editor of All the Year Round to Rev. Hughes of St Gallgo's Church whose heroic efforts at the time of the wreck of the Royal Charter off the coast of Anglesey in August 1859 inspired Dickens to write the "little article" mentioned here published in All the Year Round for 28 January and subsequently adapted as the first chapter of The Uncommercial Traveller. The invitation extended by Dickens to the minister and his family is poignant as the strain of the exertions contributed to Hughes' untimely death on 4 February 1862.<br /> <br /> In the British Academy/Pilgrim Edition of Dickens' letters the original letter is recorded as in the collection of Mrs. A.K. Frazer; it is further noted that "facsimiles of this letter were sold by Hughes to provide a monument now in Llanallgo Church to those drowned in the Royal Charter." This allows a narrow dating to 1860 or 1861. No copies of this facsimile are recorded in the Gimbel collection in other major Dickens holdings or in OCLC.<br /> <br /> The facsimile reproduces Dickens' Office of All the Year Round letterhead in monochrome slightly reduced and the text is as follows:<br /> <br /> My Dear Mr Hughes <br /> You will receive from my printer's office by this same post a Proof of the little article I have written on the subject of my late visit. I am under the necessity of asking you to send it back to W. Wills here by return of post. For although a fortnight will elapse before it is published the mechanical necessities of this Journal and its simultaneous publication in England and America render its going to press at once imperative.<br /> I doubt whether I am quite right respecting the number of the drowned buried in your churchyard and the greatest number that lay in the church at one time. Will you do me the favour to correct me on those points And if you should observe any similar inaccuracy will you do me the additional kindness to mark it I trust that there is nothing in the article that you or your household will find displeasing. I have written it out of the honest convictions of my heart and in the hope that it will at least soften the distress of many people from whom you have not yet heard. It says for me all that I should otherwise have attempted to say in this note and merely strives to express what any visitor to you must surely feel. <br /> My daughters have taken a great interest in all I have told them and particularly in Mrs Hughes's idea of coming to London in the summer. A very good copy the binding firm with some cracking to the hinges at front and rear still remaining secure minor scuffs to the boards and bumping to the corners. The contents with light spotting to the plates although better than often encountered and a contemporary owner's ink inscription crossed through "Edward Lacy" with a later inscription above to the frontispiece verso are otherwise in very good order. Little Dorrit was originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857 and this is the first edition bound thus in book form. Amy Dorrit is the youngest child of her family born in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London to which her parents had been sent. Arthur Clennam the second protagonist recently returned from twenty years away finds Little Dorrit; the two's predicaments satirize by revealing the Catch-22 of an English debtor's prison where inmates cannot work off their debts for being imprisoned but are imprisoned being in debt. This debtor's prison once housed Charles Dickens' own father. The novel features the fictional "Circumlocution Office." This is a particularly handsomely rebound exemplar probably from the late-19th century in full-calf leather of the First Edition bound from parts of Charles Dickens' beloved Little Dorrit. Light brown end papers. Gilt-ruled panels fleurs-de-lis at the eight corners. Paste-downs cracked front and rear but still a remarkably sturdy handsome copy. Minor scuffing on edges minor toning mainly on edges of illustrations tips bruised but not broken. Some foxing on frontis else text clean unmarked and brilliantly white interior. Dentelles along edges both exterior and interior. Frontispiece with tissue vignette title page title-page dated 1857 Dedication Preface three pp. dated May 1857 four-page Table of Contents with three lines of Errata then 1-625 pp. All in an important handsome addition to one's Dickens library.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. First bound edition: octavo; hardcover half-bound in marbled boards with a gilt spine title on a morocco label blind-stamped spine decorations between four gilt-decorated raised bands and gilt rules; 625pp. all edges dyed red with an engraved frontispiece with loose tissue guard a decorated half-title page and 39 engraved plates. Boards well-rubbed and some wear to the spine head; some wear to the lower board edges; some offset to the plates; and mild scattered foxing to the preliminaries. Very good.
