‎DICKENS, Charles‎

‎Autograph letter signed to Thomas Wright.‎

‎Gads Hill Place Higham Kent: 3 June 1870. One of his final letters An autograph letter penned just six days before the author's death sent in apology and reading in full "Dear Sir In the hurry of saving the day's post for many letters the enclosed was left in my cheque book when I wrote to you. I am very sorry to have caused you trouble. Faithfully yours Charles Dickens." It is accompanied by the original envelope addressed in Dickens's hand to Thomas Wright of Regent's Park and dated 3 June 1870. Dickens previously wrote to Wright on 31 May to donate three guineas to a fund in support of the writer George Linnaeus Banks 1821-1881. Dickens realized a few days later he had overlooked to include the cheque. The scholar Graham Storey argues that the recipient is "probably" the prison philanthropist of Manchester 1789-1875 who Dickens discussed on the front page of the Household Words issue of 6 March 1852: "A worn but not a weary man of sixty-three who has for forty-seven years been weekly servant in a large iron foundry. Poor as he was - toiling as he did a modest man of humble origin with no power in the world to aid him but the wonderful spiritual power of an earnest will - Thomas Wright has found means in his little intervals of leisure to lead back with a gentle hand three hundred convicted criminals to virtue; to wipe the blot from their names and the blight from their prospects; to place them in honest homes supported by an honest livelihood". Dickens spent the last week of his life at Gads Hill working on his unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood 1870 until his death on 9 June 1870. Single sheet of Gads Hill Place letterhead 176 x 113 mm written on one side only. With the original envelope addressed in Dickens's hand franked 3 June. Unrelated commercial studio portrait of Dickens loosely included. Two gentle folding creases to letter; envelope a little soiled and neatly opened: a very well-preserved example. Graham Storey ed. Letters of Charles Dickens vol. 12 1868-1870 pp. 541-2 publishing Dickens's previous letter to Wright of 31 May but not publishing the present letter of 3 June. unknown‎

‎Dickens, Charles‎

‎Autograph letter signed to the Dean of Peterborough "Sir" pledging a public performance of "A Christmas Carol‎

‎Folkestone 1855. 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Written on the first and last pages of a folded sheet in blue ink. Chemise and half green morocco slipcase with spine lettered in gilt. 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. In late summer of 1855 Dickens agrees to a public reading of A Christmas Carol already a much-loved work at Peterborough in December. He first read his ghost story of Christmas at Birmingham in 1853 and had reprised the performances the following year. "The public readings of Charles Dickens which were to play so large and in some respects so fatal a part in his life were from the start specifically associated with his philanthropic activities" Ackroyd Dickens p. 666.<br /> <br /> "Resuming the correspondence I had the pleasure of holding with you some time since I beg to say that I shall be happy to read my Christmas Carol at Peterborough on the morning of Tuesday the 18th of December. As I shall stay there but a few hours and shall probably be accompanied by at least two friends I shall not be able to have the honor of accepting your hospitality; but I feel greatly obliged to you for offering it. When the arrangements for the occasion shall begin to be in progress may I beg you to contact my friend Mr W. H. Wills of the Household Words office London. Mr. Wills will give him any information he may desire as to the time the reading will occupy and as to my own little requirements with a view to position &c."<br /> <br /> Dickens' readings were well attended and he gave memorable moving performances. In December in the midst of work on Little Dorrit which had just begun serial publication Dickens went to Peterborough and gave his reading at the Mechanics' Institute returned to London "where the people I met on their way to offices were actually sobbing and crying with cold"; up North to Sheffield for another performance then back to London like "an enormous top in full spin" and off to Paris to resume work on the novel in progress Ackroyd pp. 751-2. Letters from Dickens discussing the public readings of A Christmas Carol are uncommon.<br /> <br /> A CHOICE LETTER FROM DICKENS. Provenance: Swann November 26 2013 sale 2333 lot 270 unknown‎

‎Autograph letter signed and carte-de-visite photo dated 1867‎

‎1841. <p>1 Autograph letter signed to Dr. Thomas Southwood Smith 1788-1861. 1 page. Devonshire Terrace London 3 June 1841. 154 x 117 mm. Traces of mounting on blank verso light soiling along folds but very good. With:</p> <p> 2 Carte-de-visite photograph of Dickens by J. Gurney & Son. New York 1867. 107 x 64 mm. Photographer's logo on verso discolored and faded a few tiny spots but very good. Together 2 items.</p> <p> To his friend Thomas Southwood Smith physician and sanitary reformer regarding Smith's plan for founding a subscription sanatorium for middle-class Londoners; Dickens was an early supporter of Smith's scheme and served as a member of the Sanatorium's committee. Dickens letters relating to medicine are rare; this is the first one we have ever handled. This letter was not seen by the editors of Dickens's correspondence who were able only to record its existence from a listing in a 1909 dealer's catalogue; see House and Storey The Letters of Charles Dickens Vol. 2 p. 294.</p> <p> The letter reads:</p> <p> My Dear Dr. Smith I fear I shall be prevented by business from attending the committee tomorrow. I expected to have seen Sir Martin Shee yesterday but did not. I have therefore written to him; and when I receive his answer will let you know. I have also written to Talfourd and Macready and am quite sure they will join most cheerfully though I have not yet received their answers. Faithfully yours always Charles Dickens. Smith's Sanatorium described in its prospectus as "a self-supporting establishment for the lodging nursing and cure of sick persons of the middle classes of both sexes" opened at Devonshire House York Gate close to Dickens's house at Devonshire Terrace in April 1842. As he noted in this letter Dickens had written to the portrait painter Sir Martin Shee 1769-1850 president of the Royal Academy to ask whether Shee would consider supporting Smith's venture; Shee readily agreed for which Dickens thanked him in a letter dated 9 June see the online Charles Dickens Letters Project. The present letter also mentions Dickens's good friends judge and politician Thomas Noon Talfourd 1795-1854 to whom Dickens had dedicated The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club and stage actor William Macready 1793-1873.</p> <p> The letter is accompanied by an 1867 carte-de-visite photograph of Dickens by J. Gurney & Son of New York most likely taken during Dickens's second American tour. </p> . unknown‎

‎DICKENS, CHARLES & RICHARD HENRY DANA, JR‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from Richard Henry Dana Jr. Giving the Ecstatic Response of America to the Visit of Charles Dickens‎

‎Boston: 3 1/4 pages 9 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches January 31 1842. Original Autograph Letter Signed “Richd. H. Dana Jr.†written to Dana’s English publisher Edward Moxon describing the amazingly warm response of Americans to Charles Dickens visiting Boston. An absorbing letter showing Dana’s wonderful narrative abilities of which more than half is devoted to Dana’s account of Dickens’s stay in Boston during the English author’s celebrated first trip to America in 1842. Moxon was the British publisher of Dana’s Two Years Before the Mast and the recently issued The Seaman’s Friend. “. We have Dickens here with us & the whole town is crazy the author and his wife arrived in Boston from England on 22 January. I doubt if a literary man ever made such a ‘progress’ through a country as he is making through ours. Indeed I am certain it will be an era in literary history . From the moment the steamer was sighted up to this hour. The whole community has been in a high fever . he is obliged to refuse all visitors except at certain hours & then he holds a regular levee. The other day when he went to sit for his portrait on coming out he found the ante room staircase etc. lined with people young & old. One old lady asked him to stand still & let the ladies form a ring round so that all could see him. This was too much for his risibles & he laughed out & told her eager ladyship that he was sorry etc. but was in a hurry — & was going off; when the ladies called out to the artist ‘Do Mr. A. stop him! Don’t let him go!’ In the meanwhile the standard men of literature & wealth are paying him every attention & like him exceedingly . I have met him several times & like him very much. How full of life he is! . He told me much in the way of answering questions about yourself ‘ our friend’ as you call him Capt. Ives & others of whom I was curious to inquire . Dickens has told us many anecdotes of Charles Lamb some of which are not yet published & which interested us very much. You don’t know what a feeling there is here about Lamb .†Boston’s adulatory reception of the English writer reached its climax the next day 1 February with a great banquet held in his honor which Dana also attended. Dickens’s visit to the United States he returned to England in June resulted in his American Notes for General Circulation 1842. Written in brown ink on a bifolium of gray paper with small embossed stamp of T. Groom Boston; address panel postmark and remnants of red sealing wax. A rare view of Dickens in America through the eyes of a significant American writer. 3 1/4 pages (9 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches unknown‎
