DICKENS, Charles
Barnaby Rudge
New York: William H. Colyer 1842. q. Two Volumes. Octavo. 19cm. Publisher's original dark grey cloth spines with paper title labels over light brown paper covered boards. This is Smith's binding variant with "dark greyish frond patterned cloth" Charles Dickens First American Editions. DBRB 2012. Page 193. 215pp.; 243pp. Scuffing and rubbing to the extremities of the paper covered boards fraying and bumping to spine ends and some shipping and discoloration to the title labels overall soiling to the lighter portions of the boards. Strong and handsome shows very well a very good set. Internally clean foxing throughout although most notable in the prelims due to cheap paper quality. Ink and pencil ownerships to front flyleaves. Fore-edges untrimmed with a couple of proud gatherings. Occasionally described as "Second American Editions" although with no precedences established the Colyer imprints of Dickens' works most notably this one and his Life of Grimaldi emerged from some fairly murky days in the history of copyright and overseas printing rights before Mr. Fields managed to secure the entirety of Mr. Dickens for himself and it was all a bit of a free for all. Nicely produced although using fairly cheap paper they are an interesting collecting tributary. William H. Colyer unknown

The winner of numerous awards including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice the Hans Christian Andersen Award the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Kurt Maschler Award Briggs noted that "the whole point of illustration is that it is literary.
