Contains most first issue points but 'Birds-Eye' is hyphenated in the Contents and the page number is printed to p.431. Contemporary tan half calf with gilt titles to black label further gilt decoration to spine and marbled paper over boards. All edges speckled red and marbled endpapers. Moderate spotting to plates and facing leaves as well as preliminary and final blank leaves. Quite heavy spotting to frontispiece and vignette title. Moderate general wear to binding; upper joint and hinge just starting. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages and along the way deals with child cruelty broken and abusive familial relationships and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which towards the end of his life Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend. Nicely bound in contemporary half purple-brown morocco over purple-brown pebble-grained cloth boards the spine with six raised bands ruled in gilt and with titles in gilt. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and title page and 38 further plates by Halbot Knight Browne aka 'Phiz'. Extra-illustrated with 12 additional plates by Browne depicting the principal characters of the novel 52 engraved plates in total. Two-line errata page bound in after the list of plates. Lacks half-title. A good copy the binding square and firm with some marking to the boards and bumping to the corners. The contents with spotting to the plates as commonly encountered two plates with a small nick to the edge with neat old paper repairs to the verso a 2.5cm hole to the bottom of one plate between pp.564-5 with loss to the caption 2cm clipped from the head of the printed title page apparently to remove a previous owner's signature and with subsequent owner's name in ink a small chip to the blank bottom-left corner of p.xv a 3cm tear to p.219 a paper-repaired tear to p.495/6 a few small nicks to some pages at the gutter from the binding process and the odd mark to the text pages more so to p.213 are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dicken's 'Dombey and Son' the novel being originally issued in monthly parts between 1846 and 1848.</p><p>An attractive extra-illustrated copy. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. Classic Literature FIRST EDITION. Octavo 22 x 14cm pp.xvi 624 1. Illustrated with 38 plates vignette title page and engraved frontispiece by Phiz. Bound from the parts with many of the of sheets in the earliest state of the text. 'Dark' plate pp.547 in fine order. Contemporary half navy calf extra gilt to spine marbled sides edges and endpapers. Moderate spotting to plates some offset to tissue guards spotting to frontispiece and vignette title. Binding is gently used and pleasingly aged. An attractive near fine copy. The following first issue points are present: In the title-page vignette Capt. Cuttle's hook is erroneously on his left arm; p.xv no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14 ten lines up "aint" has no apostrophe; p.26 line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p.40 l.16-17 "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p.284 fifth and sixth lines from the bottom "Delight" instead of "Joy"; p.324 p.582 the last line has no full stop. Other points are noted in the later state. Ex-libris James Hale Bates North American travel writer 1826-1906; engraved bookplate to pastedown executed by Edwin Davis French 1851-1906 in 1894. Examples of French's work are held at Yale Harvard the British Museum New York Public Library Rochester University and Illinois State Library. London: Bradbury & Evans 1846-48. First edition in the scarce original parts of Dickens tale of the fortunes of the Dombey shipping firm. Octavo 20 parts in 19 original wrappers with 40 etchings by Halbot Knight Brown containing all advertisements as issued. A mixed state set with the following points: Part I with no ads on inner front wrapper rear wrapper blank all other parts with called for ads on wrappers; twelve-line errata slip present in Part V "delight" for "joy" twice on page 284; "Captain" on last line of page 324;  page 426 “if†is not present on line 9; on page 431 the page number is not present which marks it as the earliest issue. In very good condition. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase. Scarce and desirable. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" "On the dark Road" in part 18 created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate creating heightened contrast Johannsen Phiz 309.
