Very good.<br /> <br /> § First edition of Dickens last novel. Edwin Drood appeared originally in six monthly parts from April-September 1870. When Dickens died of a stroke on June 9 1870 he left no clue as to how the story ended. Since then many have tried to write a satisfactory resolution to the mystery. Smith I 16 with all but the last of his noted internal flaws on p.177 the last letter of "girl" is perfectly printed. unknown

London: Chapman and Hall 1837. Half Leather. Good binding. Octavo. xiv 2 609 1 pp. Early issue of the volume edition. In later 19th century morocco spine and corners. 39 of the 43 illustrations are present as well as 26 of the 32 illustrations done by Thomas Onwhyn for E. Grattan. The binding is rubbed at the extremities; front joint is starting to separate but the board is holding fairly well; wear at the head of the spine; scattered foxing; early ink note on the front free endpaper incorrectly tallies the plate-count. Early owner name of Malcolm MacLaren / March 1898 on a preliminary blank penciled underneath with a London address in perhaps a different hand. <br /> <br /> An interesting extra-illustrated edition with a mixture of issue points and states of plates. This copy is lacking plates 22 33 35 and 37. Present are the earlier versions of plate 10 and 11 etched by Buss. Dickens didn't care for the plates and they were redone by Browne fairly early. In addition to the plates that were done for the edition this copy includes nearly all of the plates engraved by Onwhyn and brought out by E. Grattan in a "pirated" edition. An interesting copy of one of Dickens's most popular books. Eckel writes: "It is quite probable that only Shakespeare's Works the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book exceed 'Pickwick Papers' in circulation" Eckel p. 17. London: Richard Bentley March 1837. First edition thus one of two formats the other larger and in 4 pages of Dickens's supplement to Bentley's Miscellany. Dickens undertook the editorship of Bentley's Miscellany commencing publication in January 1837. For the third issue March Dickens wrote this Extraordinary Gazette veiled as a royal publication promoting Richard Bentley's publishing house and pitching Oliver Twist then being serialized in the magazine. The pamphlet was bound into Bentley's publications as advertisements and possibly issued separately. Small collector's label at top of front pastedown. SCARCE edition of a fugitive Dickens' publication dealing with New Zealand. From the Black Rocks first appeared in May 1862 in Dickens's All the Year Round. The 1950 'new' edition on display was published by A. H. Reed who was curious as to who wrote it. The story concerns 'Henry' a clergyman living among Ngapuhi and his subsequent shipwreck on an island. Thinking that the tale was based on a true story Reed enquired at the Church Missionary Societies in New Zealand and London as to who 'Henry' was . . . but had no success. A local Dunedin historian surmises that John White 1826-1891 author of The Ancient History of the Maori 1887-1890 and a great admirer of Dickens may have written the story. --University of Otago summary abridged. From the library of Joseph D'Ambrosio. 441 pp. Vignette title page an introduction by Harry Stone and published in honor of the 25th anniversary of California State University Northridge 1958-1983. Limited to 300 copies. The present copy is #122 signed by both Harry Stone and Irving Block. This is a remarkable and perplexing work. This piece of short fiction which first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1868 near the end of Dicken's career differs strikingly from the loosely knit happily ended novels like Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist with which Dickens achieved his early reputation. Its neurotic insecure first-person narrator seems less like Esther Summerson Pip and David Copperfield than like Dostoevsky's underground man and Eliot's J. Alfred Prufrock. Through the narrative technique of this work "Dickens . . . reveals his bleakest view regarding self-extrication from guilt because he seems to say that once the prosecutor has moved wholly within the accused's mind there may be no possible extrication.
