The business relations of Dickens with Bradbury & Evans ended with "Little Dorrit." It was the last of the big novels issued by this firm. This novel like "Pickwick" was an assault on the archaism of imprisonment for debt. First issue with white slip in the center of p. 481 in part XVI and uncorrected errors Rigaud/Blandon in part XV B2 instead of BB2 on page 371 with Gimbel second issue point of page 573 correctly numbered. Text generally clean some plates browned at margins spines have a few nicks and small losses moderate chipping to extremities of some issues. ECKEL pp. 82-85. According to Edgar and Vail this was likely the first American edition reprinted from Harper's Magazine. They list it as the first American edition in two places in their bibliography. With 40 illustrations by Hablot Knight Brown “Phiz†including frontispiece and vignette title page. In near fine condition bookplate to the front pastedown. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase. “In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government against its financiers against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who at least in Bleeding Heart Yard believed that …foreigners were always immoral… that foreigners had no independent spirit…†Ackroyd 758. Perhaps unsurprisingly many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens’ friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: “They are forgotten in a week and your book stands and lives†Ackroyd 780. Housed in custom-made quarter dark blue morocco solander case in Very Good condition. Raised bands and gilt lettering to spine; dark blue cloth to case boards and edges; grey paper lining. Mild fading to case spine. Crease to inside lining of case lid and lining cracked at bottom corner although case itself is holding firm. Collated against Hatton & Cleaver. Text plates preliminary leaves & errata are all present as called for in the first issue including the name ‘Rigaud’ for ‘Blandois’ in part 15 on pp. 469 470 & 472-73 with the corresponding correction slip in the subsequent part. All adverts complete to front section cut out of p. 9 in part 9. Adverts to rear complete barring the following: part 14 section cut out of first page & final 14 pp slip detached; parts 19/20 lacking 2pp of advertisements to rear Royal Insurance Company. Final slip bound in upside-down in part 12. Minor difference from Hatton’s collation to rear adverts in part 11: 1-2 Cassell's Illustrated Almanac for 1857; 3-6 Baron Sonvillie's Axtra Mankaz; 6 John Cassell's Coffees; 7 American Sugar-Coated Pills; 8 Taylor's Specific Liniment. Wrapper lacking to Part 1; wrappers otherwise present but rear wrapper detached & front wrapper partially detached in part 2 & parts 19/20 and wrappers completely detached in parts 5 & 14. Spine glue & stitching just holding to parts 1 2 5 & 19/20 but part 14 is separated into gatherings & advert leaves. In parts 19/20 pp. 583-86 are loose and edgeworn at fore-edges. Small loss to p. 333. General wear to wrappers with loss and chipping to all spines though parts 3 8-13 15 & 18 have relatively minor loss ranging from c. 1-3cm. Text itself fairly clear but moderate foxing and age-browning to most plates and dampstaining to plates in part 2. Preliminary leaves to rear of parts 19/20 all present as called for. Owner's signature in old hand of 'William Hogg' or 'William Hogg esq' to front wrapper of parts 1-5 & 10-19/20. With 2 loose leaves of A4 lined notepaper handwritten with detailed bibliographic notes drawing on Hatton. One of Dickens' most piercing attacks on the injustices and hypocrisies of mid-Victorian society: Peter Ackroyd saw Little Dorrit as Dickens' 'single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society' 758 while George Bernard Shaw called it 'a more seditious book than Das Kapital' xi. Little Dorrit was subject to considerable criticism on first publication but was hugely popular with the reading public the second part reaching a circulation of 35000. Spine lightly sunned and rubbed with small surface loss to edges and at tail; boards scuffed with wear to corners. Inner hinges cracked but holding; a few loose leaves. A little scattered foxing and minor offsetting from plates. Gift inscription to front free end-paper to Nelly Gwendolen Eales dated 1889; Nelly Eales ne� Forman was the daughter of the notorious Victorian bookseller and forger Harry Buxton Forman. Dickens' satirical and much-loved novel highlighting the plight of those imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea prison where the Author's own father was incarcerated. Originally published in 19 monthly instalments from 1855-1857 the story has been adapted for the screen five times and remains a favourite today. Harry Buxton Forman is now best known for the series of forgeries he undertook with fellow bibliographer Thomas James Wise. First edition first issue in book form of one of Dickens’ most outstanding novels with the three line errata on page xiv "William" for "Frederick" on page 317 line 27 B2 instead of BB2 on pp. 371 lacking errata on page 467 and "Rigaud" for "Blandois" on pp. 469 470 472 and 473. Octavo bound in three-quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within gilt bands all edges speckled red. With 40 illustrations by Hablot Knight Brown “Phiz†including frontispiece and vignette title page. In very good condition. “In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government against its financiers against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who at least in Bleeding Heart Yard believed that …foreigners were always immoral… that foreigners had no independent spirit…†Ackroyd 758. Perhaps unsurprisingly many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens’ friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: “They are forgotten in a week and your book stands and lives†Ackroyd 780. And indeed Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day poor press notwithstanding but also esteemed now as a “wonderfully rich novel— rich in ideas rich in characterization rich in incident and written in a richly imaginative prose… Many modern critics regard it as Dickens’ masterpiece†Watts 108.
