The black boards are rubbed and the front one is bumped along the edge. Internally the book is immaculate.There are 46 illustrations by Norman Lindsay. Two are pasted in.quite rougly.The first one is opposite the title page the other opposite page One. This one is yellow all the others black and white. An introduction from the book: " The postscript that Dickens tacked on to the end of Great Expectations has not been printed in this edition. It has no relation to the novel's theme and was written after the work was finished because Bulwer Lytton implored Dickens to giver the story a conventional happy ending. The novel is published here as Dickens in the full integrity of his mind intended it to be published. A.L." What makes this copy interesting is that it includes the following hand written dedication : "To John Eaton whose friendship and helpful criticism has through the years encouraged me to carry on with my attempts at Pictorial Portraiture Julian Smith" The signature was illegible but by googling Eaton I found a portrait of one Dr. Julian Smith. There is also an undated note "Dear Ally a keepsake of John & Elsie Eaton which I hope you will enjoy. yours Alfred Donny " And finally A.H. ‎Chapman and Hall London 1861. 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Edition fifth issue. Three volumes including the publisher's catalog dated August 1861 at the rear of Volume III. Bound in the publisher's original ribbed purple cloth binding with ruling and decorations in blind to boards lettering and decorations in gilt to spine. This copy has the majority of the first issue points with only a few of the corrections that were made after the first issue. Overall a clean and attractive set extremely rare in the unsophisticated publisher's cloth. The first issue of the first edition book published on July 6 1861 was followed by four subsequent issues of the same edition published on August 5 August 17 September 21 and October 30 of the same year. Smith notes that "These first five issues were probably printed at a single impression and published with altered title pages to imply and encourage a rapid sale In all five issues the same misprints persist." The first issue which included a print run of 1000 copies was "almost entirely taken up by the libraries" leaving only a few hundred copies for private ownership. Overall a beautiful unrestored uniform set. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. Chapman and Hall, London hardcover‎

Competing American editions Both the first and second US editions of Hard Times the shortest but also arguably the most political of Dickens's novels as well as being the only novel set entirely outside of London. The novel was first published in Britain in Household Words from April to August 1854 and in book form on 7 August 1854. The novel was first published in the US by T. L. McElrath who paid $1500 for the advance sheets of the final parts of the UK edition on 8 August 1854. This copy is in Smith's binding variant B with the front wrapper also naming the published Dewitt & Davenport. The second US edition was published by Harper & Brothers a single day later on 9 August 1854. Harper was unwilling to pay for advance sheets and so used the T. L. McElrath edition to quickly typeset their edition and publish it the following day. The Harper edition was published at half the price and was designed to outcompete the former edition. Smith notes a contemporary newspaper reporting that this "entirely stopped the sale of McElrath's book robbed him of the profits of his enterprise and literally crushed the young rival out of existence" cited in Smith p. 328. 2 copies octavo. Original brown wrappers printed in black. Housed together in custom green quarter morocco box. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box. Wrappers a little worn the first edition with some reinforcement at extremities contents a little spotted second edition with some peripheral staining and minor fire damage to bottom fore corner. Original blind-stamped olive-green cloth.<br/> <br/> First Edition of Dickens's novel sited in the grimy manufacturing city of Coketown; it is his only novel not to have scenes set in London. School superintendent Thomas Gradgrind tries hard to repress the children's imagination in favor of Facts: "Now what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts"; his own two sons are named Adam Smith and Malthus. In HARD TIMES Dickens was satirizing this utilitarian philosophy and also publicizing the terrible working conditions of the industrial poor. HARD TIMES was not issued in monthly parts but rather appeared serially in twenty weekly numbers of Dickens's "Household Words" during 1854 Dickens wanted to give his periodical a boost and it worked; it is one of only two Dickens novels that first appeared in book form unillustrated -- the other being GREAT EXPECTATIONS. This copy is in the first of the four binding states in horizontally-ribbed olive-green moiré cloth with "Price 5/-" at the foot of the spine. This is a near-fine copy with scarcely any wear to the cloth and with the spine gilt still bright; the original pale-yellow endpapers are clean and intact. The one flaw other than the unavoidable browning of the spine is a glass-ring on the rear cover. Smith I pp 85-88; Carter MBV pp 7-8.
