Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi
London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition. Octavo. First issue with the last plate without a border edited by Boz. In two volumes 288 and 263pp. illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt all edge marbled with matching endpapers occasional spots of foxing to plates from the library of Charles B. Eckel pp. 140-42; Kitton pp. 177-83; Gimbel Collection B-64. ◆Spines evenly sunned to tan as usual with green morocco faint offsetting from final plate otherwise A VERY FINE COPY with only the most trivial imperfections internally and in a sparkling binding.<br/> <br/> This is an extraordinarily attractive copy of the biography of Joseph Grimaldi 1779-1837 called by Britannica "the most celebrated of English clowns" and generally considered without equal as a clown of pantomime. There has been much debate about the exact nature of Dickens' role in the writing of this book. Forster said that Dickens wrote only the introductory chapter; others have said that he edited the manuscript with the help of his father; and Bentley has stated in print that Dickens wrote a significant portion of the work. Eckel says "It is plain that the last chapter is in Dickens' style and that other parts of the book are his. Grimaldi laid the foundation for his memoirs but in a rough and diffuse manner. He gave the manuscript to Thomas Egerton Wilks who after some condensing sold the manuscript to Bentley who in turn passed it to Dickens for the purpose of embroidery." According to Kitton copies with the frame around the final plate as here are more valuable than others because of their relative scarcity; the border was added without Dickens' consent and when he expressed his displeasure it was quickly removed. A very fine and very pretty copy with only quite trivial imperfections.<br/> <br/> This is a very attractively bound copy of the first trade first American and first obtainable edition of a play on which Dickens collaborated as editor and in which he appeared as a player during performance. "Mr. Nightingale's Diary" was written for performance by the Company of Strolling Players an acting troupe organized by Dickens to support the Guild of Literature and Art which provided financial aid and housing to struggling writers and artists. Dickens had initially intended to write the farce independently but due to time constraints passed the project over to his friend and the editor of "Punch" magazine Mark Lemon. However Dickens revised the play during the production process so thoroughly that he is considered a full co-writer; Eckel says that it "was as much Dickens' as it was Lemon's." The play was performed at Devonshire House in May of 1851 with a cast including Dickens and Lemon as well as sensation novelist Wilkie Collins. The first edition of this work was privately printed for Dickens but that printing is quite rare: Eckel writes that he was able to trace only three copies. The present Boston reprint was made from an original pamphlet said to have been lost in the same 1879 fire as the last original copy of "Is She His Wife" another Dickens play. Our copy is a particularly fine one; the unsigned but handsomely decorated binding is very probably by the Riviere bindery since it exactly matches a copy of "Is She His Wife" currently in our inventory in a signed Riviere binding. Dickens Charles. MRS. GAMP AND THE STROLLING PLAYERS. New York: Privately Printed 1899. First separate edition one of 85 copies printed on handmade paper at the Gillis Press. Original vegetable vellum white boards gilt uncut. A hint of dust to white covers else a very fine copy of this slender volume. Dickens began writing this sketch in 1847 to raise additional money in a benefit for Leigh Hunt who was destitute at the time. A prior benefit had fallen short of its goal but before this piece could be finished Hunt received a pension that helped him considerably and the project was dropped. The American collector Lowell M. Palmer bought the original manuscript and had this volume privately printed from the manuscript; the rare book department of Dodd Mead sold copies for $10 each.
