All latter correct with all ads called for by Hatton & Cleaver present save for the rare "The Economic Life Assurance Society" following plates in Pt. 14. First issue of wrappers without the imprint at foot of front wrapper of Pt.1 in advertiser of Pt.10. Hatton and Cleaver note "In a few copies seen p13 misprinted "31." Our copy has this misprint. Plates clean and good to fine text wrappers bright without repair. Pt.15 text unopened. Practically all spines expertly and invisibly repaired. This title has more of the Advertiser ads than any other works by Dickens having 320 pages and 89 inserts and slips in the rear of the parts. Parts 19/20 with "Foreign Bank Notes" slip which Hatton claims is "often found wanting" and "Scottish Union" advertisement in Part 9 is in scarce white ribbed paper Hatton writes: "Of 45 copies examined only two were seen of this paper". Part 1 has an extra yellow "Fry's Homeopathic Cocoa" 2 pp. advertisement and Part 18 has "Messrs. Chapman and Hall's New Publications" 8 pp. to rear not called for by Hatton. Very good set with some chipping and closed tears to edges of Part 1 front wrapper wrappers for other parts with only light edgewear some occasional chipping to backstrips Parts 19/20 with rear wrapper and "The Anthelmintic Bon Bon" advertisement detached but present generally clean pages and plates and every part except for Part 1 with ownership signature in pencil to front wrapper. Overall a presentable and unrestored copy of this classic work in its original form. Housed in a custom dark blue folding chemise and a matching slipcase. Hatton & Cleaver p. 345. Our Mutual Friend is the last novel Dickens completed in his lifetime leaving his final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood 1870 incomplete. Our Mutual Friend remains popular among readers because of its compelling plot line which examines the advantages and disadvantages of individual wealth. The story begins with John Harmon the estranged son of a wealthy miser who has inherited his father's money and as a condition of his inheritance is meant to marry Bella Wilfer. Instead of greeting his fortune Harmon fakes his own death and watches from disguise as his father's wealth brings fortune and misfortune to various members of the community. Complete in the original twenty parts in the original wrappers with only very shallow restoration to the spine ends. The set is textually complete with all illustrations present though advertisements vary from the ideal copy carefully checked against Hatton and Cleaver. Parts 1 and 2 are complete with all ads. Part 3 is missing the ads on pp. 7/8 with a small chip to the ad on p. 9. Part 4 lacks the bottom half of the ad on pp. 13/14 and the rear ads on pp. 5/6 are also missing. Part 5 is without the final ad for Glenfield Starch and Part 6 lacks the final leaf of ads for Cramer & Co. and Glenfield Starch. Part 7 is missing the rear ads for Slip Kaye's Worsdell's Pills and Thomson's Prize Medal Skirts while Part 8 lacks the ad at the front on pp. 13/14 and one rear ad. Part 9 is missing the front ad on pp. 11/12. These first nine wrappers remain in good condition overall with a few minor paper repairs to the spine tips and some chipping to the corners of the first part's cover. Part 10 features the "Our Mutual Friend Advertiser" with page 13 misprinted as 31 as noted by Hatton and Cleaver. Part 11 is missing the final ad "A Slip-In Twenty Parts.The Headless Horseman." Parts 12 and 13 each lack the front ad on pp. 3/4. Part 14 is missing the front ad on pp. 9/10 and the Economic Life Assurance Society ad following the plates. Part 15 lacks several rear ads including Slip-Keating's Persian Insect Destroying Powder and two of the four pages of The Book of Perfumes; the Liverpool London & Globe four-page catalogue is missing half of the first page. Part 16 retains all ads though the Mappin & Webb ad appears in a different position than usual. Part 17 is lacking one rear ad Mappin otherwise complete. Part 18 contains a duplicate four-page Norton's Pills ad at the rear and lacks two pages of the Mappin & Webb ad. Parts 19 and 20 are missing the Economic Life Assurance Society ad following the plates as well as the rear ad for The Anthelmintic Big Bon; the Boosey & Co. ad is missing pp. 1-2 but retains pp. 3-4. Overall a very good and textually complete set in the original parts with the ads in various states and levels of completeness as detailed above. Shelf-wear at head and heel of spine and tiny tear on front exterion hinge former owner's name date April 6th 1869 and embossed stamp on second blank preliminary page else near fine otherwise unmarked tight square and clean. Marcus Stone. xi; 320; vii; 309pp. Octavo 21.5 cm Rebound in 3/4 brown leather with marbled paper over boards. Spine with 6 gilt stamped compartments. Marbled text block edges. New endpapers and flyleaves. Light internal foxing. Short closed tear to top edge of plate at p. 78. Forty plates illustrated in black and white. Does have "pricipal" and the three-page "Postscript." With all internal flaws as listed in Smith: I with the exception of the following: P. 277- "dis-gusted." Lacks slip explaining the title. Bound without publisher's advertisements. Volume 2 without half title. Half title present in volume 1. Eckel p. 94-95. Smith: I 15. First published in monthly installments that began in May of 1864 and ended in November of 1865 "Our Mutual Friend" is Dickens's last completed novel- a dark satire with themes such as the corruption of wealth and the pretensions of the nouveaux riches. New York: John Bradburn. First Book Printing anywhere. The publication of the monthly parts began in London in May 1864. While the serialization was still in progress John Bradburn in New York published "Book the First/ The Cup and the Lip" in October 1864 in a cloth binding making his volume the first book printing anywhere. 317 pp. On the Title Page: "Our Mutual Friend./ By/ Charles Dickens/ New York:/ Published by John Bradburn/ successor to M. Doolady/ 49 Walker-Street/ 1864. The title faces the frontispiece and the copyright page is blank. Including the frontispiece I count 7 full-page plates. Original brown stamped cloth with a man with a walking stick at the top of the spine surrounded by the title and author in gilt. Lower on the spine is "Book First." Eldgewear with some loss especially at the bottom of the spine a small edge tear on one leaf with no text affected a surprisingly clean text without tanning or foxing Good. Rare in any condition. .
