‎Sheet music: Autumn Leaves: A Beautiful Ballad‎

‎Buffalo: J. Sage & Sons 1855. Softcover. Good. Later printing. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Light dampstaining along the top and bottom of the front cover affecting throughout separating a bit at the bottom of the fold internal tape repair along the length of the fold and along the fore edge and bottom edge of the insert and foxing and light offsetting throughout still a complete and good or better copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 148. The front cover states "As sung by Miss Caroline Richings." Unlike most sheet music associated with Charles Dickens this song comes from an actual collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. This song is from a comic opera they wrote titled "The Village Coquettes." The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. The reviews were less than favorable and over time Dickens grew to agree with them once stating that he "wouldn’t repeat his productions for a thousand pounds apiece" and he reportedly wished for his foray into theater The Village Coquettes and a piece called The Strange Gentleman to be forgotten completely F.G. Kitton. There are numerous editions of this piece in OCLC including five holdings of this edition published by J. Sage & Son. J. Sage & Sons unknown‎

‎Sheet music: Last Song: Autumn Leaves‎

‎Louisville K.Y.: Tripp & Linton 1870. Softcover. Good. First edition with music by Lesta Vesé. Folio. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. Bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album music shop stamp on the front cover and some light scattered foxing a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "Dickens' last song. – 4." This song originally came from a collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. The two wrote a comic opera titled "The Village Coquettes." The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. Kitton. It's interesting to see that someone took it upon themselves to breath new life into the song over forty years later and in the year of Dickens' death; whether this is a respectful tribute to the man or an inadvertent slight against him we'll leave for you to decide. OCLC locates only two holdings. Tripp & Linton unknown‎

‎Signed and Addressed Envelope‎

‎Perhaps the greatest of all British novelists of the Victorian era author of numerous iconic classics -- among them "The Pickwick Papers" "Oliver Twist" "Nicholas Nickleby" "A Christmas Carol" "David Copperfield" "Bleak House" "Little Dorrit" "A Tale of Two Cities" "Great Expectations" and more. On a 4½" X 2½" envelope bearing a red "One Penny" stamp at upper right Dickens addresses it in bold brown ink to "Mrs. Gordon / Lixmount / Edinburgh" signing his name at lower right. Very good. Minor age toning. This item is at center in an ornate 1" wood-and-gilt frame under glass overall dimensions 12" X 22" and double beige mat. The mat opening above features a 5½" X 7" sepia-tone well-known 1858 half-length photograph of Dickens at age 46 before a table holding up a book modern reproduction and below the document is a 4" X 2" brown metal plate engraved in gilt "CHARLES DICKENS / 1812-1870." The document has been free-floated within its mat opening and both mat openings include gold fillet. Lixmount refers to Lixmount House a mansion built in a fashionable district of Edinburgh in 1793. It once housed Eliza Jenkins at one time governess of the Brontë sisters but in 1803 a Gordon family became owners and various Gordons owned and lived in it for many years -- making the specific identity of this "Mrs. Gordon" a mystery. A handsome presentation appropriate to the era of its subject. unknown‎

‎DICKENS, Charles‎

‎Signed lithograph portrait.‎

‎1869. Signed by Dickens shortly before his death A fine portrait boldly signed by Dickens at the foot; Edward Goodwyn Lewis's portrait of 1869 was the last major portrait of Dickens executed a year before his death. The existence of similar examples indicates Dickens signed a small number for presentation. Lewis 1827-1891 was known for his portraits of prominent Victorians as well as Biblical and Shakespearean subjects with works in many collections including the British Museum the National Portrait Gallery and the Folger Shakespeare Library. The original artwork for this portrait is now in Princeton. Hand-finished lithograph 25.5 x 34 cm in original mount 58 x 45.5 cm. Overmounted and presented in late 20th-century gilt frame with conservation acrylic glazing. A few spots to front of original mount lithograph taped into original mount on verso. Nowadays the best parts of the book seem to be those which are purely descriptive. Remembering how rare a thing is the ability to depict really to depict in words and especially to make interesting a description of the everyday the commonplace we gladly recognize in Boz's handwork the first proofs of Dickens' extraordinary power" Gissing The Immortal Dickens.

Cohn 232.
