First edition in book form.<br /><br />Dombey and Son is a novel by Charles Dickens published in monthly parts from 1 October 1846 to 1 April 1848 and in one volume in 1848. Its full title is Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale Retail and for Exportation. Dickens started writing the book in Lausanne Switzerland before returning to England via Paris to complete it. Illustrations were provided by Hablot Knight Browne 'Phiz'. There is some evidence to suggest thatDombey and Son was inspired by the life of Christopher Huffam Rigger to His Majesty's Navy a gentleman and head of an established firm Huffam & Son. Charles Dickens' father John Dickens at the time a clerk in the Navy Pay Office asked the wealthy well-connected Huffam to act as godfather to Charles. This same Huffam family appeared later in Charles Palliser's 1989 The Quincunx an ambitious homage to the Dickensian novel form. As with most of Dickens' work a number of socially significant themes are to be found in this book. In particular the book deals with the then-prevalent common practice of arranged marriages for financial gain. Other themes to be detected within this work include child cruelty particularly in Dombey's treatment of Florence familial relationships and as ever in Dickens betrayal and deceit and the consequences thereof. Another strong central theme which the critic George Gissing elaborates on in detail in his 1925 work The Immortal Dickens is that of pride and arrogance of which Paul Dombey senior is the extreme exemplification in Dickens' work.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Text block detached from backstrip rubbing to boards scattered foxing ephemera indicating that the book belonged to one of Dicken's partners tipped to front end paper else a good to very good copy. Very near fine in in a late 19th century binding of 3/4 pebbled black leather covered boards over marbled paper with five raised bands on the spine with gilt text and decorations in the compartments marbled end pages and the top edge of the text block is gilt. There is a minor area of 1/2" by 1/8" at the upper edge of the spine area where the leather is rubbed and the paper edge at the lower edges of the boards is rubbed through in one small area. The hinges are tight and strong. An octavo measuring 8 9/16" tall by 5 1/2" deep containing 624 pages. Tipped-in at the second free end page and before the fly title page is the front wrapper from #3 of the original part. Illustrated with 38 engraved plates and a frontispiece by H. K. Browne "Phiz". New York: John Wiley 1848. indicates that Wiley is of the late firm of Wiley and Putnam; this volume comprises pp 249-865 starting with Chapter XVII ends with LVII; black leather with some gilt stamping there is a frontis portrait of Dickens and a title page which makes no mention of volumes; there is no list of plates; leather-covered boards show a little soiling and rubbing to extremities minor crackling front hinge is partially cracked but still fairly solid also cracking at title page & pp. 845 & 865 last signature is partially loose but still holding; tear to title page; pencil writing on first blank page foxing & toning throughout some staining child's pencil scribblings on a few pages and at least one plate; all plates appear to be present. 08.
