DICKENS Charles.
Memoirs Of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by 'Boz'.
London Richard Bentley 1838. . First edition first issue 2 volumes 8vo xix 3 288; ix 1 263 1 36adspp. 12 illustrations by George Cruikshank occasional light foxing mostly to preliminary and terminal leaves publisher's floral-patterned embossed pink cloth spines gilt a little rubbed and dust-soiled spines faded otherwise very good. The first issue Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi by Charles Dickens is identifiable via the appearance of the plate at page 238 in volume two in its first state without the grotesque border which was later added. Girmaldi was one of the most renowned English actors of the Regency period. In the early 1800s he greatly expanded the role of the Clown in the Harlequinade and made it his own to such an extant that a clown became known as a 'Joey' and his white-face make-up became standard for all types of clown. Eric Stanley Quayle 1921–2001 was a noted British bibliophile with a collection of 16000 volumes collector historian and author. His own work was mainly related to the themes of collecting books but he also produced a noted biography of R. M. Ballantyne 1967 and two books of folk tales: one of Cornish Tales The Magic Ointment and one of Japanese Tales The Shining Princess. Eckel p.141. London, Richard Bentley, 1838. hardcover

Engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I and twelve engraved plates by George Cruikshank. The frontispiece to each volume hand-colored volume I. "Joseph Grimaldi" & Volume II. "Grimaldi's kindness to the Giant". Extra illustrated by the insertion of forty-eight engraved plates eighteen of which are hand colored. Six of the hand colored plates are by F.W. Pailthorpe; six by Isaac Cruikshank and two by George Cruikshank. All three of these artists are famous Dickens illustrators. Bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun stamp-signed in gilt "Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng." on rear silk endleaves. Full forest green crushed levant morocco covers triple-ruled in gilt surrounding a thin inlaid border of black morocco. Spines with five raised bands decoratively bordered in black and gilt in compartments gilt lettering gilt board edges and decorative gilt turn-ins. Front and back doublures of each volume with a superb figure and background inlaid in various colored morocco's. Green watered silk endleaves all edges gilt. Spines very slightly darkened otherwise very fine. Housed in the original fleece-lined green cloth slipcase. A spectacular example of a pair of early Bayntun bindings typical of the firm's first-rate work and use of the best materials. The four inlaid designs include "Gaby Grin The Eccentric Clown." and three other characters from the book. Joseph Grimaldi 1779-1837 called by Britannica "the most celebrated of English clowns" and generally considered without equal as a clown of pantomime. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi is the autobiography of the nineteenth-century clown Joseph Grimaldi. There has been much debate about the exact nature of Dickens' role in the writing of this book. Forster said that Dickens wrote only the introductory chapter; others have said that he edited the manuscript with the help of his father; and Bentley has stated in print that Dickens wrote a significant portion of the work. Eckel says "It is plain that the last chapter is in Dickens' style and that other parts of the book are his. Grimaldi laid the foundation for his memoirs but in a rough and diffuse manner. He gave the manuscript to Thomas Egerton Wilks who after some condensing sold the manuscript to Bentley who in turn passed it to Dickens for the purpose of embroidery." According to Kitton copies with the frame around the final plate as here are more valuable than others because of their relative scarcity; the border was added without Dickens' consent and when he expressed his displeasure it was quickly removed. Bayntun of Bath. George Bayntun 1873-1940 served his apprenticeship with the Taylor family in Trim Street and started his own bookbinding business in Northumberland Place in 1894. He employed London binders to raise the standard of craftsmanship and soon moved into a larger workshop in Walcot Street. Book Auction Records for 1906 recognized his success: "He has brought intelligence into play as well as high craftsmanship". In 1920 he purchased the bindery business of George Gregory and in 1939 the Bayntun and Rivire binderies were incorporated into a new set of premises on Manvers Street Bath from where the business still operates today. George Bayntun had an especially good relationship with many of the pre-eminent American dealers including Brentano's. Gimbel B64. Eckel pp. 140-2.

London: Richard Bentley, 1838 hardcover

Dickens Charles
MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH GRIMALDI
1838. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 36 pp undated Vol II ads. Original pink cloth embossed with flowers with gilt-decorated spines. First Edition of this early Dickens piece worked on after OLIVER TWIST and before NICHOLAS NICKLEBY -- during the time leading up to his break with the publisher Bentley. There has been considerable controversy regarding just how much Dickens contributed to this book. We quote from Johnson's biography: Bentley had acquired a life of the famous clown Grimaldi longwindedly and clumsily arranged by Thomas Egerton Wilks from autobiographical notes. He Bentley proposed that Dickens revise it. Dickens stipulated that his name should appear only as editor not as author and demanded a minimum of 300 pounds and a half share of the profits after deduction of expenses to which Bentley agreed. Dickens did no original writing except for an introductory and possibly a concluding chapter. His revisions mostly drastic abridgement he dictated to his father who vastly enjoyed his exalted office as amanuensis. This copy is in the primary binding of pink cloth embossed with a floral design with a clown in gilt holding the title on each spine. It also has the last plate in Vol II in the first state without the "grotesque" border that was added around Cruikshank's plate -- the border was removed for the subsequent 1846 one-volume edition. Condition is very good: as always the pink spines are a little faded and there is very slight shelfwear at the binding extremities there is also a discreet signature at the top of each title page; the original pale yellow endpapers are present and uncracked and foxing of the plates is generally limited to the two frontispieces. In all rather nice condition for these very fragile volumes. Gimbel B64; Carr B599; Eckel pp 140-142; Johnson p. 242.

hardcover
