The first edition first impression of Charles Dickens' renowned novel set in his classic dreary setting illustrated by Phiz with all plates present. The first edition of this work being bound from the parts with puncture marks present to the gutter. First issue of this work with 'William' for 'Frederick on page 317 line 27 B2 instead of BB2 on page 371 and 'Rigaud' for 'Blandois' on pages 469-73. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'.Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and thirty-eight plates. Collated all plates are present including the dark plates.Bound without half-title.'Little Dorrit' follows Amy Dorrit who was born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors prison. It was originally published in monthly instalments over nineteen months and this is the first edition published in a complete book.Charles Dickens is possibly the most well-known Victorian author with his fifteen novels still being widely read and performed as well as being studied in school and enjoyed by people of all ages.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his penname 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing resulting in some loss of leather to the extremities. Cloth is fraying a small amount to the front joint. Light marks to the boards. Cloth to the front board is a little cockled. Fading to the extremities of the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Front endpaper and front free endpaper are detaching. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots a little heavier to the plates particularly the frontispiece and title page. Good Bradbury and Evans hardcover‎

Contemporary half black glazed calf binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with fillets. Burgundy calf title label. Wine-colored percale boards. A slight small lack at head. Signs of rubbing to headcaps joints and corners. Narrow split along the upper joint for 2 cm. Lower joint split for 10 cm on the last third of the joint above the tail. 2 corners slightly bumped. Text paper quite clean the engravings with browning in margins and verso as always due to the laid paper used. A work of great darkness Little Dorrit is Dickens's second novel of three political and social novels. It is a denunciation of Victorian society obsessed with wealth and power. G. B. Dalton of Philadelphia. The condition of the volumes and their respective slipcases are given below. Several of the volumes feature illustrations and/or designs by Rey Abruzzi and typography by Robert Donald. All were printed by Dalton's firm Typographic Service Inc. Included: 1950 - A Christmas Carol 284/600 NF/G. 1952 - The Chimes 442/900 F/VG-. 1953 - The Holly Tree 37/900 with presentation card NF/NF. 1954 - Christmas at Dingley Dell 336/1000 NF/VG. 1956 - The Battle of Life 364/1000 with presentation card NF/G. 1957 - Somebody's Luggage 845/1000 with presentation card F/NF. 1958 - Mrs. Lirriper's Legacy 1076/1200 with presentation card F/VG. 1963 - Excerpts from The Pickwick Papers: First Day's Journey and the First Evening's Adventures with Their Consequences. 1260/1300 F/NF. Between 1950 and 1968 Samuel Dalton issued 19 consecutive Christmas editions of works by Charles Dickens. The scarcest title by far is the first appropriately being A Christmas Carol. Samuel Arnold ''Sam'' Dalton was the founder and longtime president of Typographic Service Incorporated the Philadelphia firm he founded in 1930. In June 1962 he received a special award from the Philadelphia Museum College of Art for ''furthering the fine art of typography.'' He died at home on December 6 1968. The free-lance artist Reynold Joseph ''Rey'' Abruzzi Sr. 1914-2002 was a native of Philadelphia and a graduated from the South Philadelphia High School for Boys in 1931. In the early 1960s he was the head of Abruzzi Design in Philadelphia.
