The binding is contemporary 19th century diced brown calf the covers featuring gilt rule borders the spines featuring raised gilt-decorated bands separating five compartments the 1st 3rd and 5th featuring extensive gilt tooling the 2nd and 4th printed respectively with the title and volume number on darker brown calf labels. The contents of each volume are bound with silk head and foot bands all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. <br /> <br />The first edition contents are collated complete. H. K. Browne Phiz and and George Cattermole prepared illustrations for this work which were engraved on wood by E. Landells C. Gray Vasey and S. Williams and integrated into the text. There is also a single illustration each prepared by Daniel Maclise and Samuel Williams. Most of the figure pieces were done by Browne while Cattermole was entrusted with the architectural subjects. All small misprints Internal flaws called for by Smith I 6. pp.49-55 are present. <br /> <br />Condition is very good. Each volume has been very neatly and unobtrusively rebacked retaining the original spines. We note moderate wear to the edges of the boards joints and spine ends modest spine rubbing and minor small scuffs and blemishes to the boards. The contents show no previous ownership marks. Age-toning is light as is spotting which is primarily confined to the first and final leaves otherwise scant and intermittent within. The gilt page edges remain bright. Each volume is protected beneath a clear removable mylar cover. <br /> <br />Master Humphreys Clock was originally published in 88 weekly numbers spanning 4 April 1840 to 27 November 1841. After the monthly parts Master Humphreys Clock was issued thus in three volumes the first volume published mid-October 1840 the second on mid-April 1841 the third mid-December 1841. <br /> <br />In Master Humphreys Clock Dickens 1812-1870 not yet 30 was experimenting. He originally set out to write a series of shifting stories and characters centered around Master Humphrey an old man with a longcase antique clock and his coterie of friends and their manuscripts. What began as an intended series of stories became instead two different successive serialized novels contained within the framework of the Master Humphrey conception. Initial sales were very large but quickly declined when the public realized the Clock was not to be a continuous story. Dickens quickly adapted developing one of a series of intended stories into a full-length story and this under the title The Old Curiosity Shop soon took over the entire publication
. By the end of the story's serialization in the Clock 6 February 1841 the circulation had reached a phenomenal 100000 copies. The Shop was immediately succeeded in the Clock by the long projected Barnaby Rudge Dickens's first historical novel dealing with the anti-Catholic Gordon riots of 1780 and written in conscious emulation of Scott which saw out the rest of the serial installments. <br /> <br />Concurrent with publication of the third and final volume of Master Humphreys Clock The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge were published as separate novels in mid-December 1841 each in one volume. <br /> <br />Reference: Smith I 6; ODNB <br/><br/> Chapman & Hall hardcover

London: Chapman and Hall 1840-1841. First edition. Cloth. Fair. 10.5" by 7". George Cattermole and Phiz. The first edition of Master Humphrey's Clock. The first edition of this work in book form. Master Humphrey's Clock was originally issued serially in 88 weekly numbers and in 20 monthly parts from April 4 1840-November 27 1841. Following this the work was also published in this three volume edition. In the original publisher's cloth which is rather worn. Needing a rebind but would make an attractive copy once done. With a frontispiece to each volume and numerous vignettes throughout from designs by George Cattermole and Phiz. With the pale yellow endpapers to first volume and spanish marbled endpapers to volumes II and III as observed by Smith 44-57. Collated complete. This work contains Dickens' novels of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Master Humphrey's Clock contained many short stories and it was believed that Dickens intended The Old Curiosity Shop to be a short story as well. However after a few chapters he made the decision to extend it into a novel. Later editions of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge were published as separate novels forgetting the miscellany of Master Humphrey's Clock. Charles Dickens created some of the world's best known fictional characters. He is widely regarded to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. In original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally worn. Heavy rubbing to the spines and extremities. Volumes I and III are lacking backstrips with a lot of loss to the lifting backstrip of volume II. Both boards to volume III are detached but present with final leaf attached to rear board and detached from textblock. Bumping to the extremities. Front hinge to volume I is strained. Rear inge to volume I is tender. Marks to boards. Prior owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown and to the recto of front endpaper. Internally volumes are generally firmly bound with some straining in places. Final gathering of volume III is loosening and may detach with further handling. A Harlequin set but importantly this is the first edition bound from the parts of Master Humphrey's Clock by Charles Dickens. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. In Three Volumes with Volume I and II bound together. Needing a rebind ideally and priced to alow for a good quality one. With numerous illustrations throughout the text by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 1840 to 1841. It begins with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories are included followed by the novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge that were later published as separate works. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. There is mild wear to the extremities including mild rubbing and edge wear. The hinges of volume 1 are slightly strained and the front joint is starting. The bindings are generally tight and firm. Page 305 of volume 1 is partially detached. Internally the pages have slight browning and intermittent scattered foxing. There is a nameplate on the front pastedown of volume 1 and ink signatures on the front blank in each volume.
