It was not complete at the time of his death however his manuscripts contained readable erasures which tended to indicate that the author was unwilling to tip off the reader about the eventual outcome. In this reprint edition those erasures have been added and indicated with underlinings. With color and b&w illustrations by Everett Shinn; edited and with a prefatory note & introduction by Vincent Starrett. --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards w/maroon decorations on covers & spine gilt title oval on spine and publisher's faded maroon topstain. Volume bears 1941 date but possibly published c.1950s-70s. First Edition in book form. This remains one of the great unfinished and unsolved literary mysteries: only six serial parts were written when Dickens died on the 9th of June 1870. Numerous other writers have completed the tale as they saw fit; even today this mystery prompts other mysteries -- such as the recent books THE LAST DICKENS by Matthew Pearl and DROOD by Dan Simmons. This copy is in the first binding state with the saw-tooth border on the front cover. Stab-holes are visible near the gutter of the leaves indicating that this is a copy bound from those original serial parts the publisher invited buyers of parts to bring them in to be put into the official binding; this copy does include the ad catalogue found only in some copies. Condition is very good plus perhaps near-fine: there is little exterior wear other than minor rubbing at the extremities but some gatherings of leaves stand a little proud though all is snug. ‎N.p. London n.d.: 1914. 1914. In January 1914 the Dickens Fellowship organized a dramatic 'trial' in the King's Hall Covent Garden. John Jasper played by Frederick T. Harry stood trial for the murder of Edwin Drood. G. K. Chesterton best known for the Father Brown mystery stories was the judge and George Bernard Shaw was the foreman of the jury which was made up of other authors. J. Cuming Walters author of THE COMPLETE EDWIN DROOD led the prosecution while Cecil Chesterton acted for the defense. Proceedings were very lighthearted; Shaw in particular made wisecracks at the expense of others present. For instance Shaw claimed that if the prosecution thought that producing evidence would influence the jury then "he little knows his functions". The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter Shaw stating that it was a compromise on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to convict Jasper but that they did not want to run the risk of being murdered in their beds. Both sides protested and demanded that the jury be discharged. Shaw claimed that the jury would be only too pleased to be discharged. Chesterton ruled that the mystery of Edwin Drood was insoluble and fined everyone except himself for contempt of court." - Wikipedia. Image a bit of tarnished several light creases very good overall.
