Pleasing early 20th century full polished calf by Morrell for John Wanamaker stamp-signed in ink on front free endpaper raised bands spine gilt in compartments red and green morocco labels all edges gilt. Original cloth back and covers bound in at end. With hand-colored color frontispiece engraved title and two plates and several black and white vignettes by Nicolson. A touch of rubbing to edges and tops of joints a few very mild indentations on covers light offsetting from illustrations and a couple of minor marginal blemishes but still an excellent copy with only very trivial wear. This amusing work is a direct imitation of Dickens' enormously successful Christmas Books mimicking their appearance as well as their format and themes. Pardon 1824-84 was a journalist and editor who often wrote under the pseudonym "Rawdon Crawley;" according to the DNB in addition to writing for numerous publications and the occasional book of fiction as found here he also penned several works on billiards and other "Games for Gentlemen. A Fair-to-Near Good copy of this rare Dickens' Christmas book knockoff needing to have its rear cover be reattached with attractive illustrations that was published in as close to the format of the original Dickens' & British formats as possible. "This is not only reminiscent of the Dickens Christmas books it is an amusingly slavish copy of them. Same size same fine-ribbed red cloth covers same yellow endpapers same gilt edges same format on virtually all respects. But not the same writing. . The illustrations however are knockouts."--Grolier/Elliott 108 Still relatively bright gilt and bright unfoxed colored illustrations. Internally clean except for thumbnail-sized faint red stain probably from cover on upper right corner of Dedication cocked with backstrip reattached & upper and lower caps lost inner hinges weak.
