This is an early copy of "SKETCHES BY BOZ" - Every-Day Life and Every-Day People by Charles Dickens. 1850; Chapman and Hall; London. With a frontispiece illustration by George Cruikshank. There are advertisements on the front and rear end papers and pastedowns. The book is a collection of short sketches written by Dickens that had been published in various newspapers and periodicals between 1833 and 1836. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people with the stories divided into four sections: "Our Parish" "Scenes" "Characters" and "Tales."<br /><br />Condition:<br />Light staining to the covers; bright gilt on the spine. Small cloth tears at the bottom 2 corner tips. Cloth tears with pieces missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a 3" cloth tear at the top-left corner of the spine and a horizontal cloth tear that spans the width of the spine below the title. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean and white with only some small light stains/smudges at the front on the half title page frontispiece front and back title page and Preface page. "W.H. Smith & Son - Strand - London" embossed stamp at the top-right corner of the front end paper; "EHW" embossed initials at the top of the title page. Overall the book is in Good condition. The 1st issue of the 1837 1st edition with the 20-page publisher's catalogue dated December 1836 at the rear. Tight and VG in its custom 3/4 dark morocco over marbled boards a handsome "Tout" binding. Tasteful bookplate at the first blank endpaper light wear to the outer hinges very mild flaking along the spine. Light scuffing and rubbing along the panels as well. Very fine printing on tinted laid paper of great modernity when compared to French printings of the same period. Third edition statement on title page. Preface to the first and second edition. 2 frontispieces and 7 plates on heavy laid paper in each volume by George Cruikshank. John Ruskin declared that after Rembrandt no one had engraved scenes so fine. Although it is noted in manuscript on the endpaper ""First illustrated edition"" this is doubtless an error since the first series in first edition and the second were equally illustrated by Cruikshank. Late 19th-century English bindings in full blonde calf signed July File. Spines with raised bands decorated with gilt compartments. Red morocco title labels red morocco volume labels. Complex shaped frames on boards. Top edge gilt. Brown marbled paper slipcase with tan morocco borders. A few small brown spots on spines otherwise exceptional copy with immaculate paper of perfect freshness which is of very great rarity for Dickens's works notably the engravings. The paper used is different from those habitually used for Dickens's works and resembles a deluxe paper printing thicker. Dickens's first published book most of the sketches appeared previously in different newspapers under the pseudonym Boz. John Macrone hardcover

Howell's set of 'The Special Edition of The Greater Works' which was projected to be published in thirty-one parts.This unique specimen includes an example morocco backstrip for 'Nicholas Nickleby' to the front paste down the example binding of half morocco with cloth to the boards to the rear paste down. In addition to this the volume showcases twenty plates by Cruikshank and Phiz for 'Dombey and Son' 'David Copperfield' 'The Goblin and The Sexton' 'Bleak House' 'Oliver Twist' 'Sketches by Boz' 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'The Great Winglebury Duel'.Containing pages 1-16 of 'Dombey and Son' 161-176 of 'Martin Chuzzlewit' and 97-112 of 'Bleak House'.Advert for this set to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Light rubbing to the cloth. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities resulting in liting and a very small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the cloth.
