While not capturing the public's favor as did his initial foray into Christmas novellas with Christmas Carol "Andrew Sanders has argued that it has key similarities to Shakespearean comedy and should be seen 'both as a significant indication of the tastes of the 1840s and Dickens himself.'" as quoted by Schlicke in the Reader's Companion to Dickens p. 124.
