‎THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. COMPLETE‎

‎1873. Brattleboro Vermont: published by Thomas. P. James 1873. Original brown cloth. First Edition of one of the earliest -- and certainly most curious -- sequels/solutions to Charles Dickens's THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD published in Vermont only three years after the mystery was left unfinished when Dickens died in June 1870. It occupies a considerable 488 pages. According to the "Medium's Preface" written by James a Vermont clairvoyant the spirit of Charles Dickens wrote this book completing the tale by communicating with James while the latter slept. Thus James himself has no recollection of having written it.; there is also an "Author's Preface" written by Dickens from beyond the grave. This is a tight near-fine copy with only quite minor wear at the extremities. Carr UTexas B291.

hardcover books‎

‎Dickens Charles Sir S. L. Fildes illustrator‎

‎The Mystery of Edwin Drood Extra-Illustrated‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1870. First Edition. Fine. Bound by Cedric Chivers circa 1911 in full red crushed morocco. With the coat of arms for the city of Rocherster on the front panel and intricate details on the spine. Silk moire end papers all edges gilt extra-illustrated with 17 anonymously executed watercolors depicting localites in Rochester the inspiration for the setting of the novel and Dickens's childhood home. Four of the original watercolors are in full color. Additional hand drawn title page; portrait of Fildes and John Forster tipped in as well as a few leaves from Forster's "Life of Dickens" relating to this work. Book and binding in exceptional Fine condition. Two other extra-illustrated copies in Chivers bindings appeared in the auction record 1991 and 1995 but nothing since then. This binding likely executed at the same time c. 1911.

Famed for his lush bindings involving leather gilt and vellum Cedric Chivers often partnered with William Morris' Kelmscott Press. By the turn of the century his work began to be sought out for presentation and exhibition copies of literature by authors including Charles Dickens Dante Gabriel Rossetti Alfred Lord Tennyson and Charles Lamb.

Dickens' final novel left unfinished and published posthumously breaks with some of the author's previously established literary tendencies. Present are Dickens' emphasis on the relationship among smaller family units that create a larger social ecosystem; also present are his interests in blood versus conjugal familial duties. Yet the novel takes on an even darker tone than previous works. Drood's uncle John Jasper sits at the book's center; and his roles as an opium addict and philanderer affect all characters in orbit around him. In love with Drood's fiancee Rosa Jasper becomes the main suspect when Drood disappears under suspicious circumstances. Yet because the novel was left unfinished at the time of Dickens' death no final conclusion exists. Thus a part of the book's popularity was and continues to be derived from the ongoing mystery. "Since its publication in 1870 there have been hundreds of theories.trying to argue for how they think the story might end.the existing half of Drood spans just over 200 pages but the non-existent half has been expanded into thousands of pages presented in letters journal articles monographs novels. Dickens' book is open ended albeit unintentionally and that has meant a colossal opportunity for readers to engage with and explore the wide unknown of Drood's conclusion" Orford. Fine. ‎8vo. London: Chapman & Hall MDCCCLIX 1859. 8vo ix 1-254 16 etched plates including frontis and title vignette. Full olive green fine-diaper cloth entirely stamped in blind with a three line border which encloses a rectangular frame within which is is an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design with each link enclosing a four-leafed flower. Housed in a green cloth slip-case. The head and tail of the backstrip are very slightly bumped with some sun toning; minor scattered foxing mostly near plates and some off-setting; a good clean copy in a beautifully preserved original cloth binding. § First edition in the rare secondary green cloth binding. Two of the eight internal flaws identified by Smith as necessary for the first issue have been corrected: “l†and “f†are printed on p.116 and 213 is numbered correctly. Of the latter point Eckel observes “The absence of this error does not invalidate a first edition but it fixes the priority of printing†and Smith concludes “this binding is probably of a later state than the red morocco cloth one†i.e. second issue. “When Dickens began the publication of All the Year Round the successor of Household Words he realized the necessity of making a strong start. So he began writing A Tale of Two Cities publishing the first of the serial in the opening number of his new periodical. As a novel of great popularity it probably ranks next to Pickwick and Copperfield†Eckel 87. This was the last novel in which Dickens worked with “Phiz†after a partnership of 23 years and was published on commission through the renewed partnership with Chapman & Hall. Podeschi A143. A lovely set perfect for reading or handling without fear of damage. § First editions of all five of Dickens’s Christmas books. With engravings by D. Maclise R. Doyle C. Stanfield J. Leech J. Tenniel and F. Stone Thompson G. Dalziel E. Dalziel T. Williams Swain and Groves. A Christmas Carol is the high point and the crucial component in any set of Dickens’s Christmas Books. Dickens kept its production on a short leash and anecdotes abound about his pleasure or displeasure with the differently colored endpapers the color of the cloth for the binding the typography and so forth. Oddly enough despite Dickens’ personal attention to this edition it is not a particularly well-made title. Coupled with the legions of fans who often read their copies “to death†it comes as no surprise that original and well-preserved copies of this book in its correct state seldom appear on the market. The Chimes written in Genoa Italy was commercially more successful than A Christmas Carol and Dickens worked hard to make this second Christmas book a worthy successor. The Cricket. grew from the idea to begin a weekly periodical which would have been called “The Cricket†though was abandoned quickly for a more important venture and the founding of The Daily News. The Cricket was wildly successful doubling in circulation of both its predecessors. Dickens wrote The Battle of Life during a period of recuperation needed after illness attributed to overworking; despite being seriously indisposed he managed to complete the work while working on Dombey and Son though it was not as successful as his other Christmas books thus far. The Haunted Man. was the last of the Christmas books and despite requiring a final rally from the author to avoid disappointing the public the book is considered the least interesting and lowest grossing of the Christmas books; the issue of 20000 had not completely sold when the author died. All books are in their most desirable states as follows:A Christmas Carol.: i-viii 1-166 2 ads pp. First edition first issue. Green endpapers; “Stave I†on pp. 1; uncorrected text throughout; red-and-blue printed title page with four color etchings and four woodcuts full-page color etchings. ‎Household words. A weekly journal‎

‎New York: G. P. Putnam and others see below 1850. First American edition 19 volumes 8vo text in double column within ruled borders; a fine set in contemporary half blue polished calf over marbled boards red morocco labels on gilt-decorated spines. Household Words was considerably more popular in England than America and its publishing history in America is "almost absolutely dark as is the whole subject of periodical printing and 'arrangements' . The 1850's were years of copyright agitation in America and certainly no legally protective arrangements were possible to the English publishers before the journal was discontinued in 1859. And it is not surprising that the course of Household Words was not so brilliant in America as was that of its successor All the Year Round. It was partially a local work and not quite so interesting to an America as to an English reader; it had changed publishers too often; there was no legitimate arrangement between the English proprietors and the American publishers; it was sold at too high a price; it had been published by inexperienced people and therefore had not received proper publicity and promotion; and its lack of pictorial illustration made it unpopular with the masses" Buckler William E. "'Household Words' in America" in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America vol. 45 pp. 160-66. While the first volume was published by Putnam volumes 2 and 3 were printed from English plates and have a London imprint; those publishing the remaining volumes included in order McElrath & Lord; Angell Engel & Hewitt McElrath & Barker; T. C. McElrath & Co.; J. A. Dix; Dix & Edwards; Dix Edwards & Co.; Miller & Curtis; James Miller; Jansen & Co.; and Frederick A. Brady. Complete sets of this American piracy in a matching contemporary binding are uncommon.

G. P. Putnam [and others, see below] hardcover books‎
