<p>This is an antique collection of five books from the Charles "Dickens' Little Folks" series. The books range in date from 1855 to 1860 and contain an illustrated title page and/or frontispiece each with a tissue guard. The three smaller books published by "Redfield" are 1st editions. The series was a collection of books designed to introduce children to the works of Charles Dickens. Rather than providing full complex novels the series extracted specific story lines - primarily those centered on child characters - and presented them in simplified language intended for younger readers. Each volume typically "detached" a specific character's story from the larger novel to create a standalone narrative.<br /><br />The following five books are included:<br /> Oliver and the Jew Fagin from Oliver Twist. 1855-1856 undated; 1st edition; Redfield; New York. Frontispiece.<br /> Little Paul from Dombey and Son. 1855-1856 undated; 1st edition; Redfield; New York. Frontispiece.<br /> The Two Daughters from Martin Chuzzlewit. 1855-1856 undated; 1st edition; Redfield; New York. Darley.<br /><br />Condition:<br />All books are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. The books have light soiling to the covers and spine. Occasional foxing and staining to the pages. Two Daughters has heavier foxing to the pages a small bit of cloth missing at the top of the spine and some tiny stain specks at the top of the covers. A tiny bit of cloth has torn away on the back covers of Sissy Jupe and Dame Durden. The bottom cover corners of Sissy Jupe are worn. Oliver has an embossed "Edwards & Bushnell Booksellers Stationers" embossed stamp on the title and preface pages. Little Paul has heavier foxing and staining the cloth has torn 1" down from the top-right corner of the spine shelf wear to the cloth along the bottom edge of the back cover and the front cover has a mild horizontal dent that has left a crease along the center of the board. The firm failed as of January 1880 because of business dealings in Toronto. Assignments to creditors were made at that time. In March 1880 a new outfit Belford Clarke & Co. was operating as a publisher.</p><p>The firm established a New York branch which was run by Robert Belford. Financial difficulties forced the company into receivership in 1889. An agreement with creditors allowed the company to continue with the New York branch being called the Belford Company and the Chicago branch continuing as Belford Clarke & Company. Scarce printing of "one of the most famous and important examples of travel-writing in the nineteenth century documenting simultaneously a particular moment in the development of the United States and what was surely a major turning-point in Dickens's career." Literary Encyclopedia Crown 8vo 188 x 122mm: 1044pp text printed in double columns. Publisher's peach pictorial wrappers printed in brown contemporary ownership signature to upper cover publisher's advertisement for the works of Louisa Mühlbach printed on deep pink stock and tipped to title page. A tad worn and slightly soiled occasional light creasing and foxing but securely bound and generally clean throughout. A collectible copy of this fragile production. This edition not in Gimbel Eckel or Smith but see Howes D-316 Sabin 19996 and Wilkins pp. 22-24 for other American printings. Dickens sailed from Liverpool on January 3 1842 and visited numerous cities in North America including Boston Philadelphia Richmond St. Louis Montreal and Quebec before returning to England from New York City on June 7. American Notes first published in London in 1842 is largely based on his letters to John Forster Daniel Maclise and others. Notable for its chapter on slavery which influenced Longfellow's many poems on the topic. "Along with Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America Dickens's American Notes represents one of the most significant contributions to a trend during the 1820s 30s and 40s for books about the USA by prominent European visitors; these included works by Frances Trollope Harriet Martineau Frederick Marryat James Silk Buckingham and Basil Hall. . . . Dickens made his visit to America precisely to see for himself this new 'laboratory' in which democratic government was being tested. . . . his visit brought home to him the gulf between his radical ideals and their realisation and thus represents a pivotal moment in the development of the darker more cynical world-view of his later novels."
