Fred. Bruckmann London 17 Southampton Street Strand. No date. Printed on a piece of 14 x 9.5 cm india paper laid down on a piece of 17 x 11.5 cm card with rounded edges. Aged and faded but nevertheless a nice item of Dickensiana. A sensitive study of Dickens's face above a heavily-faded facsimile of his signature. Printed at the head of the card is 'R. LEHMANN'S PORTRAIT STUDIES.' And at the foot: 'CHARLES DICKENS FRED. BRUCKMANN LONDON 17 Southampton Street Strand.' Beneath the image in small type: 'Lehmann del.' and 'Registered.' The National Portrait Gallery does not possess a copy of this item which is a smaller version of NPG D35204 whose engraver is named as Edward William Stodard. Lehmann was born in Hamburg and moved to London in 1866. He wrote two books: 'An Artist's Fred. Bruckmann, London, 17 Southampton Street, Strand. No date. unknown

<p>"THE CHIMES - A Goblin Story of Some Bells That Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In" by Charles Dickens. 1845 1st American edition 1st printing; Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book features gilt decorations on the front cover and spine as well as full-page illustrated plates. With a wonderful 2-page illustrated frontispiece. "The Chimes" is the 2nd of five novellas that comprised Dickens's "Christmas Books" which included "A Christmas Carol". There is a Dickens centenary stamp affixed to the inside front cover. From the library of A. Edward Newton esteemed book collector and author his bookplate is also affixed to the inside front cover.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Light stain at the top edge of the boards; small cloth tears at the corners; bright gilt lettering and illustrations on the front cover a bit dulled on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Thin light stain at the top page edges. Consistent light foxing throughout heavier on the front end papers. Name written in pen on a front end paper.no other writing found. Tiny tear at the upper-outer corner tip of the 1st front end paper.no other tears found. Affixed to the front pastedown is a very nice bookplate of "A. Edward Newton" as well as a commemorative stamp celebrating the 100th year of Dickens' birth 1812-1912.</p> Lea and Blanchard hardcover

‘Poor old Oscar’: Edmund Yates Edmund Hodgson Yates Scottish journalist and author. Autograph Letter Signed ‘E Y.’ to his de facto editor at The World with apparent reference to Oscar Wilde and to Randolph Stewart Earl of Galloway.
‘Sep 10 1891’. No place. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient ‘Broadley Pasha’ was a renowned autograph collector and shady social figure as well as the de facto editor of Yates’s ‘World’ until the Cleveland Street scandal drove him into exile in 1890. Broadley was a prominent figure in freemasonry and the present item appears to link two individuals who were members of Oxford’s Apollo University Lodge: Oscar Wilde whose proclivities Broadley shared and Randolph Stewart later Earl of Galloway. 1p 16mo. On first leaf of bifolium with second leaf tipped-in onto a page from one of Broadley’s albums. In good condition lightly aged. In a difficult hand. The recipient is not named but Broadley has written at the head of the mount: ‘Edmund Yates to A. M. Broadley 1891.’ If Broadley’s dating is correct the letter reveals that his connection with Yates continued after his exile. And at the foot of the mount he glosses ‘R. Stewart’: ‘The present Earl of Galloway - an unsuccessful society journalist.’ A tentative reading: ‘All right. You can write about the Lyon Chelsea book a good par. Better wait till next I can see it in proof. Home on Tuesday next. I note what you say about poor old Oscar. R. Stewart is a duffer he misleads us and then calls attention to our mistakes in the D.
