Cruikshank used to say that hee drew the figures of Fagan Bill Sykes and his dog Nancy the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates before "Oliver Twist" was written and that Dickens seeing the sketches one day shortly after the commencement of his story determined to change his plot and instead of keeping Oliver in the country to bring him to town and throw him though with entire innocence into the company of thieves'. ‎F G Kitton [Frederic George Kitton] (1856-1904), illustrator, writer and authority on Charles Dickens [Winfield S Moody (1816-18‎

‎F. G. Kitton Dickensian. Autograph Letter Signed and Autograph Card Signed both 'F. G. Kitton' to Winfield S. Moody editor of The Book Buyer discussing the claim that Dickens's works were written by Herbert Spencer' and a query on Thackeray.‎

‎Both items from Pré Mill House St Albans England. 19 and 27 March 1999. LETTER: 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on aged and worn paper. Kitton writes that he has received two copies of the Book Buyer for March and is 'much interested' in it for two reasons: 'Mrs. Garlands flattering comments upon myself and my work' and 'a very generous notice of my latest Dickens production'. He finds illustrations 'excellently reproduced' and praises 'the careful attention that has obviously been bestowed upon the preparation of both blocks and letterpress'. Turning to another matter he notes 'a query no. 346' on p.151 and wishes to provide 'an adequate reply': 'The satire to which "D. M." evidently alludes assumed the form of an unsigned article entitled "Who Wrote Dickens" published in Macmillan's Magazine June 1886.' He describes it as an 'elaborate jeu d'esprit' which 'satirises a paper that appeared in the Nineteenth Century of the previous month the writer of which endeavoured to prove that Bacon confused Shakespeare's Plays.' He adds that the reply the authorship of which 'has been attributed to Mr. Andrew Lang' 'declares with apparent seriousness that Dickens was but the amanuensis of Mr Herbert Spencer and that the latter not Darwin as intimated by "D. M." was the actual author of "Pickwick" etc.' CARD: With postage stamp and three postmarks. Addressed 'To the Editor of The Book Buyer Messrs. C. Scribner's Sons New York City U. S. A.' Headed 'Reply to Query 352.' Regarding the 'meaning of Thackeray's expression "my yellow books"' he writes that it is 'traceable to the fact that when his novels originally appeared in serial form each number was contained in a yellow wrapper to distinguish them probably from Dickens's stories which were similarly published in parts with green wrappers.' Both items from Pré Mill House, St Albans, England. 19 and 27 March 1999. unknown‎

‎DICKENS, Charles, words by, and John Hullah, music by‎

‎Sheet music: Autumn Leaves‎

‎New York: Millet's Music Saloon 1838. Softcover. Good. Early American edition. Folio. Originally a single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album as a result the leaves remain bound together owner inscription above the music large semi-circular stain at the top of the front cover affecting throughout foxing and soiling throughout and minor edgewear a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Unlike most sheet music associated with Charles Dickens this song comes from an actual collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. This song is from a comic opera they wrote titled "The Village Coquettes." The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. The reviews were less than favorable and over time Dickens grew to agree with them once stating that he "wouldn’t repeat his productions for a thousand pounds apiece" and he reportedly wished for his foray into theater The Village Coquettes and a piece called The Strange Gentleman to be forgotten completely F.G. Kitton. There are numerous editions of this piece in OCLC but only one holding of this edition published by Millet's Music Saloon which appears to be one of the earliest editions. Millet's Music Saloon unknown‎

Gimbel A104; Smith American 7 pp 219-227; Wilkins p 25 First American edition.

he American parts issue is rare at auction with just 5 copies recorded in auction records since 1977. The discrepancy between the number of plates issued in the parts 36 with the number called for in the list of illustrations 38 plus vignette and portrait is explained by Wilkins: "At the bottom of the first page of each number was printed 'The illustrations for this number will be given with the next' the text probably being set in type as soon as the English number was received and printed at once without waiting for the engraving of the plates for that number so that the plates were always one number behind the text. The Phiz plates were redrawn and engraved on wood by J.W. Orr." Though instructions are given in the last number for obtaining the final suite of plates evidently many readers did not do so — the Self and Doheny copies all contain 36 plates.

Condition: covers soiled and chipped part 19/20 covers detached and spine perished a few other covers loose or detached portion of part 18 upper cover excised some toning and staining to text some staining to some of the parts. ‎American Notes and Pictures from Italy. With Eighteen Illustrations by A. B. Frost and Gordon Thomson‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1870.
Tall 8vo. 245 x 190 mm. 9 ¾ x 7 ½ inches. iv 210 pp. Publisher’s green cloth decorated in gilt and black ink on front board title in gilt on spine; some minor discoloration to the binding corners lightly bumped.

Very good copy of two of Dickens’ most successful travel books focusing on his visits to the United States and Italy. His travels in America 1842 took him from Boston to New York Philadelphia and Washington. Dickens travels further south to Richmond and then back north to Baltimore and west to Pittsburgh Cincinnati north again to Niagara Falls and into Canada to Toronto Montreal and Quebec. On the passage home he contemplates issues that disturb him about American and devotes a long essay on slavery and its corrosive impact on the South and American Society as a whole. His depiction of the American character is at time severe and his view of rugged individualism and the proclivity for violence overshadowed the positive aspect of Americans and their vibrant democracy and strong sense of community.

In 1844-45 Dickens traveled to Italy through France to Genoa and on to Parma Modena Bologna Ferrara Rome and Naples. His revulsion for the Papacy and the Catholic Church was apparent in his descriptions of the condition of the people he encountered as he traveled through the country. .

“Ariosto’s house Tasso’s prison a rare old Gothic cathedral and more churches of course are the sights of Ferrara. But the long-silent streets and the dismantled palaces where ivy waves in lieu of Banners and where rank weeds are slowly creeping up the long-untrodden stairs are the best sights of all.â€

A very nice copy of this well-illustrated edition.
