Watts Phillips playwright and novelist. Autograph Letter Signed from Paris to the actor Frederick Vining discussing plans for writing his play ‘The Huguenot Captain’ which will be ‘my best piece’ and in which their interests ‘are identical'.
18 August 1863; 29 Rue de Penthièvre. See his entry and that of the Vining family in the Oxford DNB as well as well as his sister Emma’s memoir. 3pp 12mo with the last page written lengthwise. Bifolium. Text clear and entire but in fair condition only on aged and worn paper with strip of tape from mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf and short closed tears at foot of both leaves and tape repair. Folded once. Written in feverish style: one word is underlined seven times. Addressed to ‘My dear Vining’ and signed ‘Watts Phillips’. Regarding the play he is working on ‘The Huguenot Captain’ which would be produced in London in 1866 with Vining in the lead role he is writing ‘in haste to save post’ and to say that he will do his best to fulfil Vining’s ‘prophecy’ that ‘the “Captain†ill be my best piece’. For both their sakes he will ‘spare no pains to make it so - but - oh! mon ami! - how about the time. It is not a piece to be written helter-skelter. We must take the shine out of that Duke’s motto - and to do so requires much care and earnest thought’. Vining will require the piece by October of that year sic and he will ‘forward it act by act as rapidly as possible pushing on with so much haste as is consistent with the merits of a piece which I thing sic will prove a great ultimate advantage to you and to me’. He asks to be given time and for Vining to ‘stir me up by letters for as I see your anxiety grow my imagination will quicken’. He continues: ‘Let no time be lost in returning the Plot. I shall set to work at once in fact I am off to day to get some Callot sketches for the dances. / We shall have a Success I feel assured - but - dont hurry me more than is absolutely necessary’. Vining can always let him ‘know the truth’ as their ‘interests in such a matter as this are identical’. Domby and Son contain the first published example of the so called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the plate and heightened it with a black and white contrast. And this is the first time Browne etched some of his horizontal plates. Frontispiece and vignette title have some scattered foxing other plates mostly have browning to upper margins with occasional spots of foxing. Text is clean and bright. Bound in full green morocco double ruled gilt spine has changed to an even tone of brown raised bands with compartment fully decorated and lettered in gilt top edge gilt marbled endpapers From the library of E.G. Pool with his bookplate. A very nice copy. Bradbury and Evans unknown

A weekly collection of stories a mixture of fiction and nonfiction along with social issues of the time. While Dickens was the editor and he did serialize a few of his stories through this magazine it have several "unnamed" contributors. An American edition was published but not well received as it pertained to the English way of life not American. Complete London editions are scarce. A complete set bound in 3/4 contemporary red morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers all edges marbled. raised bands gilt title within one compartment gilt. All hinges and joints are fine and tight internally clean and bright without foxing. Some rubbing or darkening to bindings. From the library Joseph Greene with his armorial bookplate. Light dampstaining along the top and bottom of the front cover affecting throughout separating a bit at the bottom of the fold internal tape repair along the length of the fold and along the fore edge and bottom edge of the insert and foxing and light offsetting throughout still a complete and good or better copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 148. The front cover states "As sung by Miss Caroline Richings." Unlike most sheet music associated with Charles Dickens this song comes from an actual collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. This song is from a comic opera they wrote titled "The Village Coquettes." The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. The reviews were less than favorable and over time Dickens grew to agree with them once stating that he "wouldn’t repeat his productions for a thousand pounds apiece" and he reportedly wished for his foray into theater The Village Coquettes and a piece called The Strange Gentleman to be forgotten completely F.G. Kitton. There are numerous editions of this piece in OCLC including five holdings of this edition published by J. Sage & Son. J. Sage & Sons unknown

Fildes EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with reproductions of a black & white portrait of Fildes and an engraved portrait of John Forster both taken from contemporary publications a reduced reproduction of the original green paper wrapper cover all three of these mounted in heavy stock frames additional calligraphed title page noting extra-illustrations 16 ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS FOUR OF THESE WATERCOLORS 13 dry-point all but one mounted in heavy stock frames one drawn directly on heavy stock all captioned and all with tissue guards. Front flyleaf with embossed ex-libris of Dana C. Bradford. With "The Last Book" a seven-page excerpt from Forster's "Life of Dickens" mounted in frames at rear following a handwritten section title page. ◆Slight rippling of some of the inserted leaves text faintly yellowed because of paper stock as no doubt in all copies perhaps a whisper of wear to the binding but still and easily a very fine copy.<br/> <br/> In terms of content illustration binding and condition this item is obviously of very considerable appeal. Dickens' final unfinished novel "Edwin Drood" is a murder mystery that remains unsolved to this day. Set in a lightly fictionalized version of Rochester near which Dickens was living the plot involves a marriage engagement between the two orphans Drood and Rosa Budd made by their parents and distasteful to both of them. When Drood disappears suspicion falls heavily on Neville another orphaned young man who is in love with Rosa. Neville has the reader's sympathy and we can only hope that Drood's sinister and scheming uncle Jasper is the culprit. A distinguished artist who did many famous portraits in his later years Samuel Luke Fildes 1844-1927 began as an illustrator known especially for powerful black and white images of social realism; his career was measurably advanced by his selection as the artist to execute the plates in "Edwin Drood." Cedric Chivers opened his Bath bindery in the 1880s producing various kinds of fine decorative bindings but specializing in a "vellucent" binding based on the 18th century painted vellum work of Edwards of Halifax. Here he has used the vellucent technique to create the shields with the arms of Rochester and Kent inlaid on the cover and spine. The anonymous watercolors here are extremely attractive being skillfully done in pleasing colors. They are mostly depictions of the novel's localities generally in Rochester. Chapman and Hall unknown

Typewritten message reads: "XII-15-1971 / Dear ________/ Thank you for your sweet note- / Katherine Hepburn" signed in black ink. The letter has two light mailing folds and is affixed to the page by paper tape strips tat do not affect the printed name message or signature. Book itself is rubbed and worn at the extremities.
