‎The Mystery of Edwin Drood.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1870. First edition of Dickens' final novel. Octavo bound in full early 20th century morocco gilt titles and tooling to the spine double gilt ruled raised gilt bands all edges gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens with tissue guard 12 engraved plates. In near fine condition with very light rubbing and some toning to the pages. Charles Dickens' novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however "enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the 'lanes of light' between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon 'that mysterious fire which lurks in everything" Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot's outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood's killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. "There are few of Dickens' stories which are superior in the matter of composition. one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature" Eckel 96. This tantalizing tale has been adapted in film and television several times. Chapman and Hall unknown books‎

‎Master Humphrey’s Clock.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1840. First edition of this collection of short stories. Large octavo 3 volumes original blindstamped pictorial cloth gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel marbled endpapers all edges marbled engraved frontispiece with tissue guard in each volume illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition with a few chips to the spines. An attractive example. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly serial that contained both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Some of the short stories act as frame stories to the novels so the ordering of publication is important. Although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. ‎Charles Dickens novel; Alec Guinness playwright starring‎

‎Great Expectations Original script for the 1939 play‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1939. Draft script for the 1939 play. Carbon typescript on onionskin. With the name of actress May Hallatt in holograph ink on front wrapper and holograph annotations in pencil throughout. We could not verify her involvement in the 1939 production although it seems reasonable to infer from this script that the prolific stage and screen actress indeed had been possibly as stand-in for the role of Miss Havisham as many of the annotations in the script relate to that character.<br/><br/>In 1939 during a period of unemployment Alec Guinness with the aid of his wife artist playwright and actress Merula Sylvia Salaman began writing a stage adaptation of the 1861 Charles Dickens classic. Upon completion Guinness shared the manuscript with friends who decided to form an actor's cooperative the Actor's Company with the intention of putting on the production. It was also at this time September 1939 that Great Britain declared war on Germany commencing World War II.<br/><br/>The play premiered in December 1939 under the direction of George Devine at Rudolf Steiner Hall. Marius Goring performed the role of Pip with Martita Hunt as Miss Havisham Yvonne Mitchell as the young Estella Roy Emerton as Magwitch and Vera Poliakoff as the adult Estella. Guinness and Salaman sitting opposite one another on stage were the narrators as well as performing the roles of Herbert Pocket and Biddy respectively. The play received favorable reviews particularly from Sunday Times critic James Agate and did reasonably well but the strain of the war prevented it from moving to a larger theatre and the production as well as the Actor's Company went bust. <br/><br/>The following year a new production of Guinness' "Great Expectations" began but was then abandoned when Guinness refused to take part.<br/><br/>Guinness credits the play for having drawn him from the stage onto film. Upon Salaman's insistence an actress friend of hers Kay Walsh and her husband then thirty-one-year-old film editor David Lean saw the production which directly inspired Lean to take the story to the screen and make the classic 1946 film with Guinness and Hunt reviving their stage roles for the screen.<br/><br/>Brown titled wrapper. Title page present with credits for author Charles Dickens and playwright Alec Guinness. 122 leaves with last page of text numbered 34. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock rectos only. Pages Near Fine wrapper Very Good plus some creasing and damp staining bound with ribbon. N.p. unknown books‎

‎Little Dorrit.‎

‎London: Bradbury and Evans 1855-1857. First edition first printing in the original monthly parts of one of Dickens' most outstanding works which sold almost as many copies as the best-selling Bleak House. Octavo original publisher's illustrated blue-green wrappers 20 numbered serials in 19 parts with 38 plates by Hablot Knight Brown "Phiz". First issue of part 16 with "Rigaud" for "Blandois" and correction slip in part 16. With the original advertisements present with the exception of the advertisement inside the front wrapper of part 1 for "Edmistons' Pocket Siphonia" instead of "Edmistons' Crimean Outfit"; the slip for "Theatre Royal" at back of part 1; the slip for "The Wreck of the Golden Mary" at front of part 13; Dr. De Jongh's ad at back of part 14; and George Philip & Son ad at back of part 16. In near fine condition with period ownership inscriptions to the front wrappers of several parts and bookplate of Robert and Donna Jackson to the chemise slipcase. Housed in a custom morocco and chemise case. A very nice example. In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government against its financiers against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who at least in Bleeding Heart Yard believed that .foreigners were always immoral. that foreigners had no independent spirit." Ackroyd 758. Perhaps unsurprisingly many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens' friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: "They are forgotten in a week and your book stands and lives" Ackroyd 780. And indeed Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day poor press notwithstanding but also esteemed now as a "wonderfully rich novel-- rich in ideas rich in characterization rich in incident and written in a richly imaginative prose. Many modern critics regard it as Dickens' masterpiece" Watts 108. The story first appeared as a serial in 1855 and was published in book form in 1857. Bradbury and Evans unknown books‎

According to Hatton & Cleaver this is a "particularly scarce" insert. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 253-272. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise box. A very nice example. With many lovers of the author's works David Copperfield ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood Micawber the Pegottys and Mr. Dick. it would be strange if it had been otherwise" Eckel 77. ‎Dickens Charles‎

‎Charles Dickens Signed Portrait Photograph.‎

‎1868. Large oval portrait photograph measures 20 inches by 16 inches. Matted in a contemporary frame which measures 25.5 inches by 29.5 inches. Signed "Charles Dickens with a large flourish Boston Sixth March 1868." In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." He died two years later having written 14 novels several of which are considered classics of English literature. A desirable piece of Victorian literary history.     Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. unknown books‎

‎Dickens Charles‎

‎Master Humphrey’s Clock. With Illustrations By George Cattermole and Hablot Browne.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1840-41. First edition. Octavo three volumes contemporary half morocco gilt titles to the spine. Three frontispieces and numerous woodcut illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne and decorated initials in the text. In near fine condition. "Charles Dickens and Hablot Knight Browne are the most celebrated author-artist team in the history of English book illustration" and Copperfield was their "most popular success" Hodnett 111-12. Cosway bindings named for renowned 19th-century English miniaturist Richard Cosway were popularized if not invented in the early 1900s by the renowned London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran. The earliest Cosway bindings were created by Miss C.B. Currie who faithfully imitated Cosway's detailed watercolor style of portraiture from designs by J.H. Stonehouse Sotheran's manager. These delicate miniature paintings often on ivory were set into the covers or doublures of richly-tooled bindings and protected by a thin pane of glass. Bradbury and Evans unknown books‎

‎1868. Signed "Charles Dickens with a large flourish Washington D.C. Seventh February 1868." Large oval portrait photograph measures 13 inches by 13 inches. Matted in a walnut frame which measures 24 inches by 27 inches. On his Washington tour Dickens met President Andrew Johnson and signed this photograph on the date of that meeting February 7 which also happened to be Dickens' birthday. He discussed in a letter to his friend and agent John Foster regarding that day "This scrambling scribblement is resumed this morning because I have just seen the President: who had sent to me very courteously asking me to make my own appointment. He is a man with a remarkable face." From the Library of The Cosmos Club in Washington D.C. Portrait photographs of this size signed by Dickens are exceptionally rare especially with such noted provenance. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.
