Dickens Charles
Charles Dickens Arranges for the Publication of the Playbill for “Every Man in his Humour†in Which He Himself Played a Role on Stage
The next year his correspondent scientist Sheridan Muspratt helped him raise money to support the acquisition of Shakespeare's House in Stratford-upon-Avon Mark Lemon was a playwright who became the long time editor of Punch Magazine. Under Lemon’s guidance Punch became an artistic political and financial success. It had considerable influence and was known for employing the most talented humorists and cartoonists in Britain. In April 1843 Lemon was formally invited to dinner by Dickens and their friendship grew. Lemon and Punch stalwart Gilbert Beckett adapted Dickens’s “Chimes†for the Adelphi Theatre in February 1844. “The Haunted Man†followed. A shared passion for amateur theatricals cemented their friendship. Lemon appeared as Brainworm and Dickens as Bobadil in Ben Jonson’s “Every Man in his Humour†which played at the Royalty and St. James Theatres in London in the autumn of 1845. The production was transferred to Manchester and Liverpool in the summer of 1847 and in the following year the play was revived in London alternating with “The Merry Wives of Windsor†in which Lemon appeared as Falstaff alongside Dickens. In 1847 the London and Shakespeare Committee purchased Shakespeare’s House in Stratford-upon-Avon and wanted to appoint a suitable person to administer the birthplace. Dickens who was a member of the Committee then formed a touring amateur theatrical troupe in 1848 for the purpose of staging amateur theatricals in order to raise funds for an endowment for the curatorship of the house and then to install the dramatist Sheridan Knowles as the first incumbent. Two productions in aid of the project were held at the Haymarket in London and subsequently at Manchester Liverpool Birmingham Edinburgh and Glasgow. Dickens took full responsibility for running the tour in the provinces and making all the administrative and publicity arrangements. Sheridan Muspratt was a research chemist and author of the book “Chemistry Theoretical Practical and Analytical as applied and relating to the Arts and Manufacturesâ€. Dickens took an interest in Muspratt’s work was “delighted†in it and in turn Muspratt took an interest in theater. He helped to organize Dickens’ 1847 and 1848 theatrical troupe’s visits to Liverpool. Among the cast in the latter were the American actress Susan Webb Cushman who Muspratt later married. Autograph letter signed London July 22 1847 to Muspratt relating to the first visit to perform “Every Man in his Humour†requesting that he get the final playbill to Mark Lemon at Punch to publish. “Will you have the goodness by return of post to send a proof of the last complete bill addressed ‘Mark Lemon Esquire Punch Office Fleet Street London’ We wish to print it with the address.†We wish to thank the Charles Dickens Papers for their kind assistance dating the letter and confirmation of its content. This is our first Dickens letter relating to a playbill for any of his performances unknown

Dickens Charles
In a Rare Letter Mentioning Christmas Charles Dickens Reflects Wistfully on his Membership in the Shakespeare Club
He arranges to meet with a well known engineer immediately after the holiday Charles Manby was a well-known British engineers of the mid-19th century his long career beginning when he assisted his father in building and sailing the world’s first sea-going iron steamboat. Moving spirit of the British Institute of Civil Engineers at the height of the era of invention he was also Samuel Colt’s personal choice to oversee the American’s firearms establishment in London – in which capacity in 1854 he gave a personal tour of Colt’s gun-making factory to his “great friend†Charles Dickens one of Manby’s many literary acquaintances. Interestingly while Manby was widely respected for “his intimate knowledge of the most important and gravest paths of the scientific world†at the same time he was “associated with the inner circles of the most brilliant theatrical society.†George Parker Bidder was an English engineer architect and calculating prodigy. In childhood his father William Bidder a stonemason exhibited him as the “calculating boyâ€. In 1837 he was engaged with Robert Stephenson in building the Black-wall railway and it was he who designed the peculiar method of disconnecting a carriage at each station while the rest of the train went on without stopping which was employed in the early days of that line when it was worked by means of a cable. He also advised on the construction of the Belgian railways; with Robert Stephenson he made the first railway in Norway from Christiania to Eidsvold; he was engineer-in-chief of the Danish railways and he was involved with railways in India. He was also one of the founders of the Electric Telegraph Company which enabled the public generally to enjoy the benefits of telegraphic communication. In hydraulic engineering he was the designer of the Victoria Docks. Dickens loved Christmas stories and of course it is his classic “A Christmas Carol†that has contributed so much to his ongoing popularity. Shakespeare was a great influence on Dickens. As the British library notes: “Charles Dickens’s diary entry for 31 December 1840 records his £1 subscription to the Shakespeare Society. Previously a member of the short-lived Shakespeare Club from which former members founded the new Society Dickens was an active member who served as an accounts auditor and member of the Society’s council from 1843-44. The Club and Society were made up of writers actors painters and musicians who met for discussion and readings as well as to plan and publish new works. At the time of Dickens’s death his library held 49 of the Society’s publications. For Dickens Shakespeare was ‘the great master who knew everything’ and the playwright had an undoubted influence on the novelist. Shakespearian quotes and allusions as well as actors and the stage in general make frequent appearance throughout Dickens’s writings. Hamlet and Macbeth are predominately referenced in both the novels and private letters.†Autograph letter signed on his Gad’s Hill Place letterhead Rochester July 20 1869 to Manby mentioning Shakespeare and intimating that they had been in Shakespeare clubs seemingly forever. “Thanks both for the two interesting addresses and your interested account of their preparation all of which I have read with much pleasure. I shall be delighted to meet Mr. Bidder next season in your new house. We propose setting up a temporary caravan in London after Christmas.†PS. “Wasn’t it in 1469 that we belonged with the Shakespeare Club.†unknown

Dickens Charles
Charles Dickens’s Philosophy on How to Lead Life: “The soundest of sound sense tersely expressed and with a noble absence of all flourish or pretense.
He is proud that one of England's foremost engineers and mathematicians has an "acquaintance with Captain Cuttles watch" An uncommon letter of Dickens mentioning one of his most memorable literary characters and symbols and showing its application to the world of math and science Captain Cuttle is a memorable character in Dickens' work "Dombey and Son". Besides the hat and the hook Captain Cuttle's possessions consist of a watch two teaspoons and a set of sugar-tongs. All sailors depend on reliable timepieces; "Put it back half an hour every morning" the Captain says "and about another quarter towards the arternoon and it's a watch that'll do you credit." The symbol of this watch returns throughout the book and today there are watches made in the style of its large silver face. Charles Malby was a well-known British engineers of the mid-19th century his long career beginning when he assisted his father in building and sailing the world’s first sea-going iron steamboat. In childhood his father William Bidder a stonemason exhibited him as a “calculating boyâ€. In 1837 he was engaged with Robert Stephenson in building the Blackwall railway and it was he who designed the peculiar method of disconnecting a carriage at each station while the rest of the train went on without stopping which was employed in the early days of that line when it was worked by means of a cable. He and Manly were both officers at the Institution of Civil Engineers. The minutes of this organization shows a debate in 1869 around the construction of waterways in England and the measurement being similar to that of Captain Cuttle's watch which had to be adjusted to tell the right time. Autograph letter signed on his Gad’s Hill Place letterhead Rochester to "My dear Manby" July 12 1869. "I am cordially obliged to you both for your note and its enclosures. The speech of Mr. Bidder's is like everything he does: the soundest of sound sense tersely expressed and with a noble absence of all flourish or pretense. I am proud of his acquaintance with Captain Cuttles watch and if you will tell him so when you have an opportunity I shall be still more obliged to you. "My daughter and her aunt write in kindest remembrances to Mrs. Manly and to you. We are all in unimpeachable condition and just beginning to be warm." An uncommon letter of Dickens mentioning one of his most memorable literary characters and symbols unknown

Dickens Charles
A Signed Volume of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Tales Containing His Famous “A Christmas Tree†Likely the First Work in English About Christmas Trees by a Major Author
Our first autograph of Dickens relating to his Christmas stories for which he remains beloved. Household Words was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens which took its name from the line from Shakespeare’s "Familiar in his mouth as household words" in “Henry Vâ€.  It was published every Wednesday from March 1850 to May 1859 and contained a mixture of fiction and nonfiction. A large amount of the non-fiction dealt with the social issues of the time as one might expect knowing Dickens’ interests. Dickens liked to serialize his work in the magazine in addition to having it published in book form so a number of his books also appeared in Household Words. It was customary in the 19th century for issues of magazines to be bound together in book form so he would also take articles on a similar theme that had appeared in the magazine and gather them together for publication as a book. Dickens loved Christmas stories and of course it is his classic “A Christmas Carol†that has contributed so much to his ongoing popularity. He made a practice of having Christmas stories published in his magazine and these were generally contained in a special Christmas edition. His first contribution to a Household Words 'Extra Christmas Number' was "A Christmas Tree" which was inspired by children gathered around that recent innovation the Christmas tree which was introduced into England by Victoria's consort Prince Albert in 1841. Dickens's second and third short-fiction Christmas offerings "The Poor Relation's Story" and "The Child's Story" are his contributions to†A Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire†in the Christmas Number of Household Words for 1852. In 1853 Dickens contributed "The Schoolboy's Story" and "Nobody's Story" to “Another Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire†in the Christmas Number for Household Words. Some other Christmas Stories include “The Seven Poor Travellers†in the Christmas Number for Household Words in 1854 “The Holly-tree Inn†the Christmas Number for Household Words for 1855 “The Wreck of the Golden Mary†for the Christmas Number of Household Words in 1856; and there were others. His “Christmas Tales being the Extra Numbers of Household Words†1859 signed by Dickens on the title page with his frontispiece portrait and the ownership inscription of "Mr Russell Browne York 1859" on the verso of the title. Loosely inserted is a note dated 1933 by Walter Browne stating that "This volume of Christmas Tales by Charles Dickens.is specially autographed by him for ‘Pa Browne’ who had the leaflet sent up to him & he kindly signed it - Pa Browne died in 1882." This volume is a collection of the magazine issues apparently put together and bound by Browne with the title page specially printed by him as well. The volume features some of Household Words’ classic short stories including "A Christmas Tree" 1850 "What Christmas is as We Grow Older" 1851 "The Poor Relations Story" 1852 "The Child's Story" 1853 "Nobody's Story" 1853 "The Seven Poor Travelers" 1854 "The Holly Tree Inn" 1855 "The Wreck of the Golden Mary" 1856 "The Perils of Certain English Prisoners" 1857 "Going into Society" 1858 among others. The initials "C.D." are penciled in besides Dickens' own contributions. This is our first Dickens item directly relating to Christmas and the stories he wrote for that holiday. It remained in the Browne family until we acquired it unknown
