New York: McLoughlin Brothers Though undated this book was probably published around 1919 based on a birthday inscription on the front free endpaper to the original owner. The novel have been condensed and edited for young readers. What makes this copy special are the beautifully executed pen-and-ink illustrations throughout by J. Mahoney including a full-color frontis click on photo. The book is bound in a deep green with a drawing in black of London on the front panel and black titles on the spine. The book's title is also in die-stamped gilt on the front panel. The corners are bumped the spine tips are rubbed and there's a small tear in the spine cloth. The binding is tight and secure and the text pages are clean throughout although with some age-toning. The book measures 7 by 9 3/8 inches and includes 120 pages. Hard Cover. New York: Harper & Brothers 1856. The book is bound in 3/4 leather and boards. See photo. Although the book's interior is generally in good condition the book's covers are not. Both front and rear exterior hinges and the rear interior hinge are split. The front panel is present but nearly unattached. The rear panel is attached but a bit warped. The leather is scuffed and there is severe chipping at the top and bottom of the spine. See photo. The interior binding remains secure. The pages are mainly white and clean without foxing but there is some light damp staining. Page 143 and 719 both containing fashion illustrations are missing. A collection of 15 wooden masks carved by Justo Duarte Reyes and painted by his wife Felipa Pluma Duarte. They were carved between 1895 and 1920. The masks were from the town of Rancheria de los Cacchuates and used in the Procesion de los Nazarenos. This collection of masks was discovered by Dr. Norman D. Thomas. Each mask has a black and white photo with a detailed description the carvings the mask's ceremonial function and its symbolism. In very good condition with light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing to covers. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library.
