The reissue contained illustrations-the frontispieces plus additional illustrations by artists such as Marcus STONE John LEECH and Clarkson STANFIELD-and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition.Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition containing they contended all the works the novelist wished to preserve. He continued publishing the Christmas Books throughout the 40s and the stories became mainstays of Dickens's public reading tours of the 1850s and 1860s.<br /> <br /> Charles. Edmund. Brock 1870-1938 was a widely published English line artist and book illustrator who earned his first book commission at age twenty. He became a very successful illustrator best known for his line work initially in the tradition of Hugh Thomson but he was also a skilled colorist. Brock's work varied with the sort of story he was illustrating some of it refined and described as "sensitive to the delicate teacup-and-saucer primness and feminine outlook of the early Victorian novelists" while other work was "appreciative of the healthy boisterous thoroughly English characters" i.e. soldiers rustics and "horsey types." A fine copy.<br /> <br /> The Guild of Women-Binders was an organization founded to promote and distribute the work of women bookbinders at the turn of the 20th century. It was founded by Frank Francis Karslake in 1898 and disbanded in 1904. It helped sell bindings produced by women binders already practicing and instituted training programs to teach other women. Frank Karslake was a London bookseller and a founder and financial backer of the Hampstead Bindery. At the 1897 Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court he encountered several bindings by women including Annie S. Macdonald on display and his interest was piqued. Soon after he invited several women binders to exhibit their work in his London shop; this "Exhibition of Artistic Bookbinding by Women" which ran from November 1897 to February 1898 garnered a substantial amount of interest from the public and convinced him that promoting women's bookbindings could be a profitable venture if perhaps partially for the novelty. Whatever his motivations Karslake soon began acting as an agent to women binders already practicing such as Annie MacDonald and Edith and Florence de Rheims.<br /> <br /> The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club also known as The Pickwick Papers is the first novel by English author Charles Dickens. His previous work was Sketches by Boz published in 1836 and his publisher Chapman & Hall asked Dickens to supply descriptions to explain a series of comic "cockney sporting plates" by illustrator Robert Seymour and to connect them into a novel. A very nice unrestored copy.<br /> <br /> Bleak House is the ninth novel by Charles Dickens first serialized between March 1852 and September 1853. It is one of Dickens's most intricate works with numerous characters and interwoven subplots centered on the infamous case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce a long-running legal dispute in the Court of Chancery over conflicting wills. The case drags on for years devastating the lives of many involved.<br /> <br /> The narrative structure of Bleak House is unique featuring a dual perspective: part of the story is told by Esther Summerson the novel's heroine in the first person while the other part is narrated by an omniscient third-person narrator. This approach adds both a personal and societal dimension to the storytelling giving readers intimate access to Esther's experiences alongside broader societal commentary.<br /> <br /> Dickens drew inspiration from real-life legal cases particularly Thellusson v Woodford a case about a contested will that dragged on for decades beginning in 1797 and not concluding until 1859. Although some legal professionals at the time criticized Dickens's portrayal of the Court of Chancery as exaggerated Bleak House played a role in raising public awareness about the inefficiencies of the legal system. Alan Watts was the Honorary General Secretary of the Dickens Fellowship. He gives many details of Dickens' house at Gad's Hill: 'how the billiard table was illuminated what measures were taken to stop thefts from the wine cellar where the flag was kept which flew when Dickens was at home' wrapper blurb. Publisher's neatly restored dark brown cloth decoration blind-stamped to boards gilt title and illustration to spine. Moderate spotting and toning throughout as usual heavier to plates. Small institutional inscriptions in black ink to the top of most plates as well as the title-page and two front blanks. Some additional notation in brown ink to front pastedown and some erosion possibly due to the removal of a bookplate/signature. Boards neatly respined with the original overlaid. A few light marks mild edgewear. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages and along the way deals with child cruelty broken and abusive familial relationships and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which towards the end of his life Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend. Through most of the 19th century and well into the twentieth Tauchnitz issued copyright editions of English and American works to be sold on the continent for travelers and resident English speakers. These Continental Edition were published at the same time and later as the standard UK editions.Works consists of A Christmas Carol The Chimes and The Cricket on the Hearth. Bound from the parts with many of the of sheets in the earliest state of the text. 'Dark' plate pp.547 in fine order. Contemporary half navy calf extra gilt to spine marbled sides edges and endpapers. Moderate spotting to plates some offset to tissue guards spotting to frontispiece and vignette title. Binding is gently used and pleasingly aged. An attractive near fine copy. The following first issue points are present: In the title-page vignette Capt. Cuttle's hook is erroneously on his left arm; p.xv no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14 ten lines up "aint" has no apostrophe; p.26 line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p.40 l.16-17 "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p.284 fifth and sixth lines from the bottom "Delight" instead of "Joy"; p.324 p.582 the last line has no full stop. Other points are noted in the later state. Ex-libris James Hale Bates North American travel writer 1826-1906; engraved bookplate to pastedown executed by Edwin Davis French 1851-1906 in 1894. Examples of French's work are held at Yale Harvard the British Museum New York Public Library Rochester University and Illinois State Library.
