Front covers and spines decoratively stamped in black and lettered in gilt back covers ruled in blind and stamped in blind with a central blind vignette. Original yellow-coated endpapers. A few paper inner hinges split some light rubbing to corners otherwise an excellent set far better than is usually seen.

"This the best edition of my books is of right inscribed to my dear friend John Forster biographer of Oliver Goldsmith in affectionate acknowledgment of his counsel sympathy and faithful friendship during my whole literary life" dedication leaf p. v in Volume I of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.

"The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. Dickens eventually came round to the idea that an elegant edition could raise the stature of his writings. He faced a complication in that the rights to the works were divided between Chapman and Hall and Bradbury and Evans. Consequently the volumes contained the imprints of both publishers. With a dedication to Forster the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume. Titles included Pickwick Nickleby Chuzzlewit Old Curiosity Shop REPRINTED PIECES Barnaby Rudge Hard Times Sketches by Boz Oliver Twist Dombey Copperfield PICTURES FROM ITALY Bleak House Little Dorrit and Christmas Books. The only illustrations were the frontispieces. Between 1861 and 1874 this edition was reissued in 30 volumes with the addition of Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A CHILDS HISTORY OF ENGLAND CHRISTMAS STORIES and Drood. The reissue contained illustrations-the frontispieces plus additional illustrations by artists such as Marcus STONE John LEECH and Clarkson STANFIELD-and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition.Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition containing they contended all the works the novelist wished to preserve. Calling it the first well-printed issue with specially cast type and better paper than that used in previous editions this set was published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876 and sold at £15 for the set a high price for the time" Oxford Reader's Companion to Dickens pp. 205-206.

Gimbel D72. He continued publishing the Christmas Books throughout the 40s and the stories became mainstays of Dickens's public reading tours of the 1850s and 1860s.

Charles. Edmund. Brock 1870-1938 was a widely published English line artist and book illustrator who earned his first book commission at age twenty. He became a very successful illustrator best known for his line work initially in the tradition of Hugh Thomson but he was also a skilled colorist. Brock's work varied with the sort of story he was illustrating some of it refined and described as "sensitive to the delicate teacup-and-saucer primness and feminine outlook of the early Victorian novelists" while other work was "appreciative of the healthy boisterous thoroughly English characters" i.e. soldiers rustics and "horsey types." Other illustrations were grotesqueries drawn to amuse children looking at or reading storybooks. London: J .M. Dent & Co., 1905 unknown‎

A fine copy.

The Guild of Women-Binders was an organization founded to promote and distribute the work of women bookbinders at the turn of the 20th century. It was founded by Frank Francis Karslake in 1898 and disbanded in 1904. It helped sell bindings produced by women binders already practicing and instituted training programs to teach other women. Frank Karslake was a London bookseller and a founder and financial backer of the Hampstead Bindery. At the 1897 Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court he encountered several bindings by women including Annie S. Macdonald on display and his interest was piqued. Soon after he invited several women binders to exhibit their work in his London shop; this "Exhibition of Artistic Bookbinding by Women" which ran from November 1897 to February 1898 garnered a substantial amount of interest from the public and convinced him that promoting women's bookbindings could be a profitable venture if perhaps partially for the novelty. Whatever his motivations Karslake soon began acting as an agent to women binders already practicing such as Annie MacDonald and Edith and Florence de Rheims.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club also known as The Pickwick Papers is the first novel by English author Charles Dickens. His previous work was Sketches by Boz published in 1836 and his publisher Chapman & Hall asked Dickens to supply descriptions to explain a series of comic "cockney sporting plates" by illustrator Robert Seymour and to connect them into a novel. The book became a publishing phenomenon with bootleg copies theatrical performances Sam Weller joke books and other merchandise. London: Chapman & Hall Ltd., 1890 unknown‎

With the engraved bookplate of Ethel & George Booth on inside cover of chemise.
Chemised in green cloth slipcase lettered in gilt on spine. A very nice unrestored copy.

Bleak House is the ninth novel by Charles Dickens first serialized between March 1852 and September 1853. It is one of Dickens's most intricate works with numerous characters and interwoven subplots centered on the infamous case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce a long-running legal dispute in the Court of Chancery over conflicting wills. The case drags on for years devastating the lives of many involved.

The narrative structure of Bleak House is unique featuring a dual perspective: part of the story is told by Esther Summerson the novel's heroine in the first person while the other part is narrated by an omniscient third-person narrator. This approach adds both a personal and societal dimension to the storytelling giving readers intimate access to Esther's experiences alongside broader societal commentary.

Dickens drew inspiration from real-life legal cases particularly Thellusson v Woodford a case about a contested will that dragged on for decades beginning in 1797 and not concluding until 1859. Although some legal professionals at the time criticized Dickens's portrayal of the Court of Chancery as exaggerated Bleak House played a role in raising public awareness about the inefficiencies of the legal system. This ultimately contributed to judicial reforms in the 1870s.

Additionally Bleak House holds a special place in Dickens's life as his youngest child Edward "Plorn" Dickens was born just a day after the novel's first installment was published on March 13 1852.

Gimbel A130; Hatton & Cleaver pp. 275-304. ‎Dombey and Son‎

‎Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1848. Literature FIRST US EDITION. Octavo 24 x 16cm pp.viii 2 9-320 2. With 38 plates by Browne as well as a frontispiece and title-page vignette. Publisher's neatly restored dark brown cloth decoration blind-stamped to boards gilt title and illustration to spine. Moderate spotting and toning throughout as usual heavier to plates. Small institutional inscriptions in black ink to the top of most plates as well as the title-page and two front blanks. Some additional notation in brown ink to front pastedown and some erosion possibly due to the removal of a bookplate/signature. Boards neatly respined with the original overlaid. A few light marks mild edgewear. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages and along the way deals with child cruelty broken and abusive familial relationships and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which towards the end of his life Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend.
