Outer joints professionally repaired a short tear to the printed title page no loss with light-moderate foxing mostly near the plates and a few stains to the leaves 80-81 and 98-99. Engraved frontispiece vignette title and 14 plates by H. K. Browne Phiz; despite the flaws a handsome copy overall.<br /> <br /> Dickens's great historical romance set during the French Revolution remains one of his best known and most widely read works. The novel was also serialized in the weekly journal All the Year Round from April 30 to November 26 1859 and published in book form on 21 November 1859. A Tale of Two Cities is considered one of the greatest of Dickens' works and contains one of the most recognizable openings in the English language: "It was the best of times it was the worst of times." Originally released in parts after its completion A Tale of Two Cities became and remains one of the most widely read novels in history selling over two hundred million copies to date. The book follows events in London and Paris around the time of the French Revolution and Dickens used Thomas Carlyle's history of the French Revolution as both a source and inspiration. Our volume possesses several features attesting to the very first printing: 5 lines at bottom of page 9; p.10 last line mark between the R and U and M of RUM; Line 29 p. 260: ""holding""; p. 341 line 1: L.5 p. 341 Inscriptino; ""inbe-licate""; p. 342 line 5: ""S. Veller""; p. 432 the F of Posthumous papers of is poorly printed. The engraved title is in second state with Tony Weller's name above the porch the first state having simply Veller. Contemporary full brown calf binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with gilt thick fillets long tools on the bands and blind wavy patterns on the spine. Red calf title label: Pickwick. Wide blind ruled frame on boards doubled with a gilt border. Traces of rubbing. Spine slightly faded. As almost always due to the acidity of the paper the engravings often show browning notably and often a browned frame in the margin. The posthumous papers like all of Dickens's works first appeared in parts from April 1836 to November 1837 then in volume form. Written by a 24-year-old Dickens the work propelled the writer into a glory from which he never descended. The reception of the work was immense and very popular; it was claimed at the time that only the Bible and the works of Shakespeare exceeded The posthumous papers in circulation. A couple light pencil notes to front endpaper. Toning to cloth two very small black ink flecks to upper and one to lower. Effectively re-spined. Gentle edgewear. A bright crisp copy. Very good. The fourth of Dickens' Christmas novellas published first as books rather than in serial. The story is the only one in the series that doesn't involve the supernatural. Instead it bears resemblance to an Austenesque romance. This copy possesses the rare second state engraved title-page differentiated from the three other designs by the position and lettering of the 'A Love Story' at the bottom. Howell's set of 'The Special Edition of The Greater Works' which was projected to be published in thirty-one parts.This unique specimen includes an example morocco backstrip for 'Nicholas Nickleby' to the front paste down the example binding of half morocco with cloth to the boards to the rear paste down. In addition to this the volume showcases twenty plates by Cruikshank and Phiz for 'Dombey and Son' 'David Copperfield' 'The Goblin and The Sexton' 'Bleak House' 'Oliver Twist' 'Sketches by Boz' 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'The Great Winglebury Duel'.Containing pages 1-16 of 'Dombey and Son' 161-176 of 'Martin Chuzzlewit' and 97-112 of 'Bleak House'.Advert for this set to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Light rubbing to the cloth. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities resulting in liting and a very small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the cloth. Front hinge of Volume XXV is a little strained. Rear hinge of 'Old Curiosity Shop' Volume II is starting but firm. Internally generally firmly bound 'A Child's History of England' is tender between pages 168 and 169 and requires careful handling.
